Crossfire......a result of mating two outstanding phenotypes withtremendous genetic profiles. Both “Titlest” and “Big Tibbie” as we refer to her, are outstanding in every dimension of beef and breed character and those traits have been transmitted to Crossfire in large proportion. Low birth, above average growth with carcass, fertility and maternal all tied together resulting in a moderate, wide based, soft made beef bull with lots of hair and gentle disposition. Crossfire will see heavy service here at the ranch as we test out this outstanding young prospect in our ever growing Black Angus seedstock program.

Angus Juniors Awarded $17,500 at GOAL ConferenceFebruary 19, 2014: for immediate release

CALGARY, AB — Fifty-two Canadian Angus youth gathered in Calgary, Alberta over the weekend for the Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (GOAL) Conference hosted by the Canadian Junior Angus Association (CJAA) to promote leadership skills among peers from across the nation.

During the conference, $17,500 worth of scholarships and awards were given to Angus youth by the Canadian Angus Foundation (CAF). Last fall, the Foundation committed to giving more than $35,000 to Angus youth and young breeders as directed by theirmission statement to “preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research and historical restoration.”

The first award presented at GOAL was a $3,000 heifer voucher, won in an attendee draw. Peter Van Staveren of Stayner, Ontario, was the lucky winner of this prize to be used in the purchase of any Canadian-born Angus female registered in Canada.

“The Angus voucher will help me grow my herd and become more competitive in the show ring,” said Van Staveren. “I would like to thank the Canadian Angus Foundation for this opportunity and making this bursary possible. Being in university can make it challenging to continue to purchase cattle while paying for school at the same time.”

This summer at Showdown, the Canadian Junior Angus national show, three more heifer vouchers totalling $7,000 will be awarded. CJAA members who participate in Showdown will be eligible to win these heifer vouchers.

The next set of awards presented during the GOAL Conference were the three new Foundation Legacy Scholarships. Three scholarships totalling $10,000 were presented. Five finalists were selected from ten CJAA member applicants based on theirapplications and academic achievements. The finalists took part in a personal interview conducted by CAA members and a moderated panel discussion on industry and Association topics.

The winners of these three prestigious scholarships were as follows – winning $5,000 and first place was Patrick Holland of Montague, Prince Edward Island; second place and winning a scholarship of $3,000 was Katelyn Dietrich of Forestburg, Alberta; and the recipient of third place and a $2,000 scholarship was Breanna Anderson of Swan River, Manitoba.

Holland is currently pursuing a career in pharmacy at Dalhousie University. As a current director of the CJAA and recent member of the champion World Angus Forum youth team in New Zealand, Holland has been active in the Association on a national level. When asked to compare pharmacy school with the CJAA, Holland explained the importance of fostering good relationships with peers and customers, no matter the situation. In a time when technology and practices are constantly changing, he also admits that being organized and adaptable as well as being a good problem solver will assist him both as a pharmacist and a farmer.

“I am honoured to have had the chance to compete against the other finalists in this competition and to ultimately receive the first Foundation Legacy Scholarship,” said Holland. “This award will cover my school tuition cost for a semester, which will take atremendous amount of pressure off of me and allow me to be more involved with Angus in the Maritimes. I am very thankful to the Canadian Angus Foundation and its contributions for the creation of this scholarship fund.”

Dietrich is also thankful for her second-place scholarship award. She is currently enrolled in her third year studying education at the University of Alberta with hopes of finding placement in a small town teaching grade one or two. Last summer, Dietrich wasa CAA Summer Marketing Intern, travelling across Alberta to get youth enthusiastic about the CJAA. Dietrich credits the CJAA and Alberta Junior Angus Association for giving her the fervor for youth involvement.

Today’s Angus Advantage 12

“I believe that teaching is an occupation that will allow me to continue to be an agriculture enthusiast and share my love for youth programming,” said Dietrich. “I look forward to the future and all of the opportunities that may present themselves.”

Anderson, the recipient of the third-place scholarship, is currently in her third year of Animal Science at the University of Saskatchewan where she is an active member of the judging team and Stockman’s Club. She notes that while her future may include research, genetics or communications, one concrete thing she sees in her future is farming. Anderson is the current Vice President of the Manitoba Junior Angus Association and has been very active on a national level, recently returning from theWorld Angus Forum youth competition and travelling across Canada over the years for GOAL Conference and Showdown.

“All of my future goals come back to two things: people and cattle,” said Anderson. “The wonderful thing about agriculture is that there are numerous avenues that my education can take me on.”

The next set of awards were presented before GOAL took place. GOAL travel bursaries were given based on a candidate’s desire to attend GOAL and the return investment he or she could provide the Association. The CJAA sponsored four bursaries and the CAF sponsored two bursaries. The following CJAA members received $750 bursaries to offset GOAL expenses – James Worth, Cornwall, PE; Ella Wood, Clyde River, PE; Peter Van Staveren, Stayner, ON; Kelsey Ribey, Paisely, ON; Brandy Thaxter,Woodville, ON; and Breanna Anderson, Swan River, MB.

“We were looking for a means of getting more youth to GOAL Conference,” said Belinda Wagner, CAF and CJAA Executive Director. “By awarding six individuals a $750 bursary, we are helping Juniors financially who might otherwise not be able to attend this nationally recognized event.”

The GOAL Conference promotes leadership skills within the Angus breed. Junior members from all over the country attend this three-day event held in a different location each year. During the event, Juniors hear from nationally recognized speakers, participate in workshops designed to improve their leadership skills, get involved in teamwork activities, and develop beef and industry knowledge. Participants are also given the opportunity to network and socialize with fellow Junior Angus members.

The Canadian Angus Foundation functions to preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research, and historical preservation. The Canadian Angus Foundation wasincorporated in 1993 and is the charitable arm of the Canadian Angus Association.

Story and Photos by Rosie Templeton

It also involves constant analysis to act upon supply and demand, and the demand for Angus-influence cattle is clear.

Jeff, general manager for fed cattle brings his information technology degree to bear in benchmarking performance on grids: “The data led us to more and more Angus.” “When Gateway started, we were influenced by feedlot performance,” Les says. “The

top performing cattle at the time were more of the Continental breeds – big gains, big performance.

“But as we started capturing data, weighting feedlot versus grade performance and all-around, then the benefits of higher-grading cattle started to influence our purchasing. As we fed our own cattle and captured data for 15 to 30 others, the need for Angus influence kept coming back to us.” Since 2006, such black-hided cattle have moved up from 40 percent to today’s 70 percent of marketings. The CAB and other Angus premiums help producers and marketers like Gateway, but it isn’t the whole story, Jeff says. “We’re not just feeding the black-hided cattle for the premium,” Jeff says. “It’s for all the characteristics from the Angus breed of conversion performance within the feed yards, feed to gain, and overall ability to sell the cattle.” “Gateway’s biggest asset is the data that we collect,” Les says. The grid system allows for comprehensive feedback on the cattle they market, and everything from grades to premiums can be benchmarked and shared with feedlot and ranching customers.

Black Angus-influence cattle have earned their way into 70 percent of the transactions handled through Gateway Livestock Marketing LLC, Taber, Alta.

Company President Les Smith responded to a service need 15 years ago, drawing on many years as a feedlot operator, futures trader and hedging analyst to begin marketing finished live cattle for feedlots. “We were mediators, carrying out negotiations with packers for the feedlot industry,” he says. From there, Gateway grew into grid marketing, which led to buying feeder cattle for feedlots – including Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand qualifiers. “That [CAB] is where we found the need to be at the beginning,” Les says, “acquiring the proper cattle to meet a certain need.” He simplifies the 1999 roots as “just working for the feedlot.” Three years after bringing Gateway Livestock to life, he was joined by his son Jeff among other partners in a company that now offers marketing, exchange and carrier services to cattle producers across Western Canada. High-quality cattle create a win-win situation for Gateway and those producers, Les says. When cattle are earning the highest premiums, producers can pocket higher returns year after year, but that involves a great deal of shopping around for the best markets.

Today’s Angus Advantage 16

One customer for the past 10 years is cattle feeder Doug Nieboer of D&L Nieboer Farms, Iron Springs, Alta., who was attracted by the information feedback.

“If you don’t get the data from the plant, it’s like fishing in the dark,” he says. He appreciates Gateway’s ability to find the best market for his finished cattle, whether in the United States or Canada, and agrees the available premiums pointed to more Angus.

“When we sell on the rail the bonuses for Choice or AAA and higher are a little gravy that we can get with Angus,” Nieboer says. “We have to manage them so that they can get bigger, like the exotics, but not over fat.”

When data points to a certain ranch as a source of premium cattle, he tries to establish a relationship to keep buying them. On the other hand, Nieboer says he has suggested some long-term source ranches add Angus genetics.

“They’ve done that, and it improved the grading,” he says, noting relatively recent gains by the breed. I’d say Angus sold at a discount to Continentals 10 or 15 years ago, but now they’re even. They’re a better breed now.”

With the constant movement of cattle, often to the United States, the Smiths stress the importance of traceability in cattle marketing. “Once you have data, you also have traceability,” Les says. “And I think traceability – it’s a big word right now and it’s tough for farmers and producers to swallow, but that’s what’s out in front of us.”

“When a consumer goes to the store, they can buy a protein product for far less than what we need for [high-quality beef],” Les says. “So, it has to be sold and marketed on its qualities and accountability.”

On the producer end, the Smiths see more opportunities for ranchers retaining an interest through the supply chain. “We’d like to work with ranchers to better their herds for the value all through the chain,” Jeff says. “That’s our next goal or step. And within that, we’ll market anything from even before calves are born to yearlings and all the way.” Les says that may even start a year or more before calves are born. “As we analyze what the market is doing, we look to see what will benefit our customers,” he says. “As far as I’m concerned, the cattle are always for sale. Working with ranchers to understand their production costs and what they need and when, that’s a big part of risk management. Managing and marketing.” “A premium reputation is important to a brand like CAB or Gateway,” Jeff says. “CAB has standards of what they require. We do the same. Whether it be the fat cattle, the feeder cattle, how we move or what we’re buying, we have strict standards. We’re trying to have a name branded out there.” Just one more reason they’re dealing with more and more data-driven and Angus-influenced herds. Outstanding Students Selected as Angus Summer InternsFebruary 11, 2014: for immediate release

Rocky View County, AB—For the third year in a row, the Canadian Angus Association is excited to announce our summer internship selections. The CAA is committed to a three-year program which primarily focuses on marketing the female beef 4-H project, increasing the number of junior Angus members, general industry promotion and exposure to CAA membership services. Through additional funding, a research internship also became available this year.

The two interns chosen to represent the CAA this summer most directly in their chosen provinces but also across Canada are Kaitlin Olynyk of Saskatchewan and Sophie Wotten of Ontario.

Chosen for her charisma and passion for the Angus industry as well as her experience with youth, Olynyk will add value to the CAA through her summer activities with the Association. Growing up in Goodeve, Saskatchewan, she was taught the fundamentals of the breed through her own family operation, Crescent Creek Angus. Olynyk has experience with youth through various leadership experiences including Saskpower farm safety presentations, volleyball coaching and special needs camp counselling, to name a few. Her Angus involvement includes being a director with both the Canadian Junior Angus Association and Saskatchewan Junior Angus Association. Olynyk is in her third year at the University of Regina in the faculty of education.

Additionally, Little Britain, Ontario native Wotten will join the summer internship program. Located in Ontario, Wotten will focus on marketing Angus on the other side of the country. With her passion for marketing, she is excited to bring her motivation and enthusiasm coupled with her studies in marketing at the University of Guelph to her summer experience. Having received many scholarships and awards through 4-H and the Young Canadian Simmental Association, Wotten brings a new prospective to the Association. Wotten grew up on a Simmental seedstock and commercial sheep operation.

The CAA marketing internships are for college, university or technical students looking for an opportunity to interact with juniors and promote Angus cattle to both youth and breeders alike. The positions begin in late April and will last through August.

“I’m excited to work with two outstanding young ladies this year through our summer internship program,” said Cassie Dorran, CAA director of marketing and branding and intern supervisor. “This year we will be concentrating on our messaging to our youth, membership and entire beef industry, and it is my goal that we keep the future of our Association strong through interest from a younger generation.”

Contact the Canadian Angus Association at 1-888-571-3580 to request a summer intern attend your school for a very comprehensive and interactive workshop promoting agriculture with a strong focus on purebred livestock.

This year, the CAA was able to hire a third intern based out of the Calgary office with an emphasis on research and special projects. Matt Bates of Cameron, Ontario, will coordinate research projects for the organization, create a relationship with research facilities in Alberta and apply for grant applications. Bates will coordinate with the research herd at the University of Alberta’s Kinsella Research Station. He will also work on a teat and udder project, sampling

Today’s Angus Advantage 20

1,500 cows to compare their teat and udder structure with their genetic make-up ultimately creating a GE-EPD (genomically enhanced expected progeny difference) for these traits. Bates will spend a majority of his time on the road working with producer herds to create a functional database for this project. Bates is certainly no stranger to the Association, having served as a marketing summer intern last year, and acting as a part-time fieldman in Ontario this fall, as well as recently being named the top individual at the World Angus Forum Youth Competition, and having his own herd of Angus cattle. In the fall, Bates will continue his education at the University of Guelph with aspirations to be a large animal veterinarian.

Bates will start with the Association in February and continue his duties for a 32-week contract. For more information about his work, contact Kajal Devani, CAA Director of Breed Development and intern supervisor.

The Canadian Angus Association is Canada’s largest purebred beef breed organization. The Association represents 3,000 members across Canada for the purposes of registering and recording the pedigrees of purebred Angus cattle in the closed HerdBook and promoting the breed across Canada. The member approved mandate is to maintain breed registry, breed purity and provide services that enhance the growth and position of the Angus breed.

In Memory of - Kenneth George CoxKenneth George Cox entered this world on January 9, 1943 in Stettler, Alberta to parents Thomas and Florence Cox. The Cox family moved to the Rosalind Area when Ken was 9 years old where he attended East Lynn School until grade 5. He then went to Rosalind school until grade 10 when his principal told him “you are wasting your time at school” and he was also leaving his home work on the bus each night. So off he went to Vermillion Agricultural School. After two years Ken graduated top five in his class. Post graduation, Ken became employed at Byers Flour Mills in Camrose. On a peat moss delivery run to

Pedersen’s Greenhouse, and still covered in flour, he met Verny Grettum. She decided in her mind then and there, “this was going to be her husband”. Two and a half years later, this came true and they got married on July 2, 1966. They were blessed with a daughter (Lorraine), and a son (Rustin). Ken’s passion was livestock, particularly Angus cattle which his family showed across North America for the next 30 years. He was also heavily involved in 4-H as a member, then a leader and later inducted into the 4-H hall of fame. Ken and Verny purchased their farm in 1979 in the Armena area. At this point they were breeders and promoters of the Angus breed. Ken continued to work with the Angus breed over the next 35 years and became a representative for the Canadian Angus Association. Horses also played an important role in his life, raising quarter horses as a younger man, then later working with Alan and Wes Gordeyko and their Clydesdales.

For the past six years Ken has used his faith and positive attitude to battle his cancer. As a means to keep himself motivated he and Verny made thousands of rope halters and Ken hand built several working sleighs and wagons. Ken is survived by his wife Verny, daughter Lorrain (Greg Bell); son Rustin (Cathy Miller); and two precious grandchildren Kendra and Cody whom he adored!! Also he is survived by his brothers Les, Darrell and Don. Ken was predeceased by his parents Tom and Florence, and his sister Dorothy Henry.

Ken’s last quote to Verny and Rusty on April 13, 2014....”If you take something out to use it...Put it back!!!”

Today’s Angus Advantage 21

No matter your role in the beef industry value chain, from seedstock to commercial ranch, feedlot, packer or beef marketer, everybody wants two things: profit and a great eating experience for consumers.

What does that mean to registered Angus producers? How will the genetic selections you make today affect the viability of the Angus breed in the future? How can you and your bull customers earn premi-ums for cattle?

To help find answers, the Canadian Angus Associa-tion and Certified Angus Beef LLC have partnered to offer “Carcass 101,” a first-of-its-kind workshop set for June 18 and 19 in Olds, AB.

Marbling is the top driver of beef quality, and the lack of it is the biggest reason carcasses don’t grade AAA or Prime, or meet standards for premium brands like Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®). Marbling is a highly heritable trait, so genetic selection at the very beginning of the beef value chain makes a big difference to the end product, beef.

“Feedlot and cow-calf operators can impact beef quality hugely by focusing on consistent animal health and solid nutrition that boosts rate of gain and the development of internal marbling,” says Larry Corah, CAB Vice President of Production. “Starting with genetics that will fulfill carcass trait potential is also crucial.”

The agenda for Carcass 101 will cover three key themes: carcass quality characteristics, genetic traits affecting carcass quality, and consumer beef demand in Canada and abroad.

Participants will have the unique opportunity to assess live animals – analyzing both phenotype and genotype – then evaluate carcasses harvested from these animals with the help of Fred Taylor, grading contractor for Cargill Foods and owner of Taylor Made Research.

Other scheduled guest speakers include:

• Dr. Phil Bass (CAB meat scientist) – Understanding carcass components and value• Duane Ellard (Canada Beef Inc.)– Global differences in carcass utilization• Tom Lynch-Staunton (Livestock Gentec) – Genetics of carcass traits• Jamie Jensen (Jentech Ultrasound Services) – Is ultrasound still important?• Callum Sears (commercial producer) – Utilizing carcass data for the cow-calf producer• Allied Marketing Group – CAB licensed partner on feeding Angus cattle• Canadian Angus Association – How HD50K tests work• Larry Corah – Growth of quality market and CAB potential in Canada

Carcass 101: How Beef Quality

Adds Value to Your Cattle

By Trish Henderson

“The main goal of Carcass 101 is to help Canadian Angus Association members add value for commercial cattlemen – cow-calf or feedlot – who purchase Angus genetics,” says Rob Smith, Canadian Angus Association CEO. “The event will demonstrate how our breed development tools, such as performance programs and genomic testing, can impact the quality of beef produced in Canada.”

“There is a premium-paying market for a higher quality beef for anyone who can deliver it; the challenge is to focus on the right genetics to get that done,” says Larry Corah. “With the cattle you have now and the genetic tools available to improve, Canadian cattlemen are in a prime position to fill the demand. Quality beef catches more dollars. Today, it’s not unusual to see high-quality pens selling for $100 to $150 per head above base prices.”

The National Meat Training Centre at Olds College will play host to the Carcass 101 event. Recently

updated and expanded, this world-class facility is home to the Olds College Meat Processing program – the only course in North America that offers training in the complete meat process stream, from slaughter to retail.

Space is limited for Carcass 101, so early enrollment is recommended to avoid disappointment. Registration cost is $350 per participant and includes a welcome dinner reception on Tuesday, June 17, lunch and supper on Wednesday, June 18, and lunch on Thursday, June 19.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Pomeroy Inn and Suites at Olds College; call 1-855-800-8815 for reservations. Hotel accommodations are also available at the Best Western of Olds (phone 403-556-5900) or Ramada Olds (phone 403-507-8349). I call my little column the “Real World”, trying my best to stay current with commercial cattle markets and influences that affect commercial beef producers. Ultimately, they are our number one customer, for those of us involved in the seed stock business. Many refer to the commercial industry as the “real world” of beef production, but those who are long term successful in the purebred business are in tune and have a strong grasp of the “real world”

In today’s social society, if someone refers to living in the “real world”, it has a negative tone or implication to it. The “real world” in beef production these days, seems more like fantasy land! New records are being set weekly for returns on the sale of all classes of beef production. Don’t get me wrong, it is well deserved and long overdue, but now that it has come to pass, after years and years of anticipation, it does seem a little like the dream has come true. I do realize that with the cost of production today, the levels of return that we are seeing are very much needed to keep producers involved in our industry. The other good news, is that the outlook into the future is extremely strong, high prices are being paid for cull cows and feeding heifers, which will make herd expansion extremely slow; keeping the supply tight and returns healthy for the next decade.

Again for those of us involved in the purebred seed stock industry, we just came off an unbelievable spring bull sale season, one that will be hard to duplicate. Personally, I was involved in spring bull sales that grossed in excess of fifteen million dollars. Absolutely phenomenal, for a couple of reasons, purebred breeders needed the boost as well as commercial producers after ten plus years of hard times and the other is, commercial producers could afford to spend it on quality bulls.

The biggest thing purebred breeders need to keep at the top of their mind is …culling! Keep quality high, each year the goal should be to have a better bull pen, not a bigger one. I can see it now, next spring when it comes time to make bull sale catalogues, producers will want to add ten more bulls because they barely had enough last year. 2014 was the perfect storm for bull sales, first off we had record salvage prices which meant any bull whose calves were questionable, feet were questionable, semen was questionable, attitude was questionable and so on, he was culled maybe for more than he originally cost. The second thing was the coldest winter in over twenty years, which proved devastating for semen testing herd bulls and other folks just panicked, even without testing and added extra bulls, making sure that they were covered.

I have already talked about the slow rebuild of the cow herd, we are not going to need more bulls anytime soon, what will be in demand, is better, more consistent bulls, backed by quality customer service. Keep your numbers moderate and quality high and you will gross as much or more than by adding another ten, which will actually reduce the value of your top group of bulls.

P.S. You can cut those ten bulls and sell them for $1500.00 each as steers, remember, not that long ago… you floored your bulls at $1500.00!

February 2014 Board Meeting Highlights

The Board of Directors met at Angus Central on Friday, February 14; Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16. Their meeting coincided with the Canadian Junior Angus Association Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (GOAL) conference. The CAA and CJAA boards met Friday evening for an open discussion and exchange of ideas. The entire CAA Board joined the GOAL participants at the Saturday evening GOAL banquet. Sunday afternoon, GOAL participants visited Angus Central where the board provided tours of the building. Several directors stayed through Monday and participated in the remainder of the GOAL conference.

The board continued their work on Ownership Linkage, the way in which directors interact with and obtain feedback from members. They identified five key areas for this focus:Financial sustainabilityMember communicationsPromotion and advertisingField servicesMember services

The board will work with the Association on communicating messages to members. Starting in March, members who call the CAA office may be surveyed with a question on behalf of the board.

The board also continued the work that they started in September reviewing their policies. They anticipate that the policy review will be fully completed at the June meeting.

The Canadian Angus Commercial Identification Performance Program (CAIPP) was formally accepted and endorsed by the board. This program will launch in the second quarter of 2014.

The Quebec Angus Association formally requested a delay in taking their turn to host Convention in 2015. The board has elected to have the Canadian Angus Association host Convention 2015 with no regional host. The Convention rotation will be delayed by one year as a result. Quebec will host Convention 2016 the rotation shall follow: Alberta - 2017, BC - 2018, Maritimes - 2019 and Manitoba - 2020.

Six 50-year ‘Pioneer Member’ award recipients and two 75-year ‘Heritage Member’ award recipients have been confirmed to be recognized this year, with the first recipients to be acknowledged at Convention in June.

Communication was a significant topic of discussion throughout the meeting. The board reviewed both the CAA three-year Strategic Plan and the member communications strategy and discussed ways of communicating with existing and commercial members. While a new member communications strategy will be announced on February 21, the board and CAA staff will continue to investigate new opportunities and technologies for member communication.

E arly recognition and treatment of kidney disease in cattle can often have a very favourable prognosis. The capacity of the

kidneys is great; so often we may not see any specific clinical signs until two thirds of the total kidneys’ capacity is damaged. There are many causes of toxic damage to the kidneys but this article will focus on the infectious causes of kidney disease resulting in what veterinarians call pyelonephritis (pus and infection in the kidneys). The infection results from common bacteria which gain access to the kidneys from the bloodstream. Kidneys are essentially blood filters. The other area of access is up the urinary tract and urinary retention from partial blockage which encourages growth of bacteria and infection. Kidney infections are generally individual animal problems and cows may have the history of a prior infection from a retained placenta, mastitis, pneumonia etc. These infections suppress the immune function and allow the seed of bacteria to gain access to the kidneys. In cattle one of the very first clinical signs is weight loss. I see more of these cases in late pregnancy or right after calving. The pregnant cow must essentially filter both hers and the fetus’s blood. This taxes the filtering ability of kidneys, which is why this is the most common time to acquire kidney infection. Cows carrying twins have this problem compounded. Any time there is extreme weight loss for no apparent reason have the animal checked by your veterinarian. They can palpate the left kidney and the ureters (tubes going from the kidneys to the bladder). A urine sample can be obtained and checked for blood, bacteria, pus cells and other parameters necessary to rule in or out kidney infection. Blood samples can be taken and the white blood cell count may be up. Other parameters such as blood urea nitrogen (BUN) only go up once the kidneys have been severely damaged and by then the prognosis is very poor. My experience has been if cattle are still eating and drinking well and kidney disease has been diagnosed, prognosis with treatment is very favourable. If appetite has been suppressed the BUN is too high and often in spite of vigorous treatment like intravenous fluids prognosis is very poor. There are many more cases of kidney infection out there than we realize. This has been made evident to me by the large number I have seen when autopsying cows under the BSE testing program. Both kidneys will be severely infected and have very little normal function left. The common history is the farmer noticed weight loss but

KIDNEY DISEASE IN CATTLE By Roy Lewis DVM

no other symptom and then the cow quits eating and died shortly thereafter. Most of these cows can be saved and go on to lead productive lives or at least be taken to slaughter the following year if caught early enough. I am sure a number of these cows died on producers farms with no diagnosis prior to the BSE testing. Producers may notice increased frequency of urination or pain at urination. Look closely at the urine especially at the end of the urination process for signs of pus or blood (red coloured). This will provide a clue kidney infection may be advancing. In cattle there are also many causes of red urine from bacillary hemoglobinuria (redwater), phosphorus deficiency to a red dye excreted when on clover. All these and many other causes of red urine can sometimes make the specific diagnosis more difficult. The most common bacteria causing kidney infection in cattle is very responsive to penicillin. There are two keys in treatment. First the earlier the better before more permanent kidney damage is done. Secondly the length of treatment must be adequate to completely clear the infection to avoid a relapse. Treatment periods for at least 14 days in my experience most often will avoid the relapses. This most definitely will entail treating daily with procaine penicillin for the first few days till noticeable improvement. Then several long acting shots the required days apart will stretch treatment out to the two weeks. A common mistake is stopping treatment too early when attitude improves and the urine clears. This is a smouldering infection and will come back if not completely cleared. As with any relapse the second time treatment is much more difficult as the infection becomes deep seeded. If the cattle remain thin long after treatment there has probably been permanent damage to the kidneys. These cattle are like time bombs and with impaired kidney function are unlikely to reproduce and could eventually succumb to kidney failure. They might be best being culled before the condition worsens. Kidney infections are sporadic occurrences across the prairies. Every herd experiences them from time to time but with careful observation (always keep an eye on body condition score) early intervention and correct treatment the results are often gratifying. Penicillin is still a very effective drug as it is concentrated and excreted through the kidneys and subsequently the urine. Let’s try and treat more of these conditions as they are, even with labour included, a cheaper treatment with a favourable outcome if caught early enough.

Today’s Angus Advantage 34

CAA Communications Strategy Released and Distributed on Friday, February 21st, 2014

Executive SummaryYour Canadian Angus Association is excited about the challenge of communicating with a broad membership base with diverse needs and wants. To this end, your CAA is 100% committed to communicating with you in exactly the manner in which you wish to be communicated with. We want to hear and learn from you on YOUR terms!

To establish what your needs are, every CAA member is requested to complete the Member Communications Preferences that was sent to every member in January 2014. The Member Communications Preferences document can be completed on paper as it was sent to you or online by following the link on www.cdnangus.ca to http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e8vvv22dhr88wzrw/a01b5hruyuus1/questions.

Your Communications Preferences will form the basis of how your CAA will communicate with you. There will be three primary means of communicating: electronic, multimedia and mailings. All communications will be made available in each of these means and your CAA hopes to reach you by more than one of these methods.

When economically feasible, CAA Member Communications will be made available in both official languages.

More than ever before, the Canadian Angus Association Board of Directors wants to hear from its membership and will do so as a form of Ownership Linkage, their primary means of learning what CAA members think, want and need, so they can better determine the vision for our Association. To accomplish this, please expect to be asked, maybe more than ever before, throughout the year, your opinion and impression on various topics. This quest for input will come to you through our social media sites, our website, in person and by telephone calls.

In a pledge never made before, each CAA member will be engaged at least once every calendar year through one of the means detailed in the complete Communications Strategy. Please consider this your guarantee!

Historical and Current State of CAA CommunicationsYour Canadian Angus Association faces a challenging opportunity: never in our 108-year history have there been so many broadly differentiated methods for communicating with our membership, nor such demand for every method. Our membership has always included all ages (from Juniors to those receiving 50, 75 and 100 year membership Pioneer and Heritage awards) and we have placed our trust in one primary and one secondary method of member communications—primary: a printed publication and secondary: direct mail. During this time of rapid technological change and immediate information exchange, your CAA believes our obligation is to lead into the new generation of Association communication while assuring YOU still receive what YOU need.

Through new technology, we can reach our membership more immediately and less expensively than both of these historically accepted means. To assure you get the information you want and need as quickly and cost effectively as possible, we must utilize new and diverse technology.

We also realize that not everyone adopts all new forms of technology transfer. And our commitment to you is this: we will not adopt a primary form of communication that you as a member do not or will not use.

Today’s Angus Advantage 35

Our New CAA Communications ObjectiveOur commitment to you is this: your CAA will communicate with you in one of your top three preferred means of communication. We will learn what these are when you complete your Member Communications Preferences; this will become as important to us as your address and phone number. You will choose how you hear from your CAA.

YOUR Responsibility, as a CAA MemberIn the package you received from your CAA within the past month containing your Member Details and Spring Calving Herd Inventory, the top sheet is your Member Communications Preferences; please fill this out and return it or complete it online by following the link on http://www.cdnangus.ca to:http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e8vvv22dhr88wzrw/a01b5hruyuus1/questions. It should take no more than 10 minutes to answer the questions.

Further, as we create more ‘touchpoints’ between you and your CAA, we encourage our members to share greater information with us than you ever have before. We believe there is interest in, and we will share within our various platforms of communication, information you share with us such as:• Your bull and female sale results, public or private;• Acknowledgements, recognition and awards that you or others receive;• Marriages, births, anniversaries, graduations, key personal moments, etc.;• Human interest stories.

Your Association’s Commitment to YOU as a CAA Member We want to hear from YOU! And we WILL Face-to-Face or Voice-to-Voice, at least once each yearYour CAA Board of Directors employs a self-management system called Policy Governance. One of the most important components of Policy Governance is “Ownership Linkage”. Ownership Linkage refers to the Board ‘reaching out’ to you, the CAA member and their electorate, to hear what you think, listening to your needs and wants to assist the Board in building their vision for the Canadian Angus Association. To support this, the CAA wants to communicate with you in a manner that is more active than what we’ve done in the past. We want to engage you in communication that is two-way, so you have the opportunity to tell your CAA what you think, need and want… and so we can listen to you… and learn, in English and, when viable, in French as well.

Starting in 2014, your CAA is pledging to engage you, in person or through telephone conversation, at least once during each calendar year that you are an active CAA member. There is a good chance you will be engaged multiple times each year, but if you don’t typically contact your CAA office or speak to board members or staff at events, please know that we will be seeking you out to talk to you.

Methods of Member Communication As stated above, all members will receive communication in at least one of the top three methods you have identified through the completion of your Member Communications Preferences. Please note that we are not using your responses to establish this plan, but given the broad means by which we’ve committed to communicating with you, you will pick the means and we’ll make it happen.

Your CAA will utilize three primary means of communicating with you: mail, electronic and multimedia. Please see the list below for existing and new methods of communication we will employ to share Association and industry developments with you as well as engage you to hear what you think, need and want.

Electronic Communication- We will continue our practice of monthly electronic newsletters e-mailed and posted on the CAA website;- This will be the primary means of sending immediate information;- More frequent ‘e-blasts’ may occur based on press releases and message urgency;- Paid advertising opportunities will be unveiled over the next two years- Re-launch of your CAA website by this fall in an easier-to-navigate format;- Revised and re-launched CAA Member(formerly Breeder) Handbook this fall;- Begin sending text messages to members who wish to receive them with specific information or links to such;- Increased reliance on social media, continuing our current efforts while exploring new opportunities

Multimedia Communication- Commencing in the third quarter of 2014, we will begin bringing you Angus Central Television or AC-TV, a quarterly news update broadcast that will be available online. For those of you who do not actively or regularly use a computer, tablet or smartphone, we will send a DVD with AC-TV for you to watch, in the comfort of your living room, on your own television screen.

Today’s Angus Advantage 36

- While our primary objective is to produce AC-TV programs four times each year, if you appreciate it and cost effectiveness supports, we will move to offering AC-TV every two months in hopes of monthly production, should demand warrant.- After the first year of AC-TV, we will launch an associated sponsorship/advertising opportunity where you will be able to purchase time on this broadcast to promote your operation.- We will expand our use of video sharing sites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) to share instructional videos and presentations we hope will benefit you and add value to your Canadian Angus Association membership experience.

Mailings- A number of our members prefer their communications to come in the mail. Your CAA has a very clear objective with our ‘rethink’ on member communications: we will communicate with you, our members, in at least one of the top three ways that you prefer. If you identify that you want to receive your information by mail, you shall receive it in this manner. It might not be in the form of a glossy print publication, but you’ll get it. We promise you this.- And, as identified in the point above, even if you don’t own a computer but do own a DVD player, you will receive each new AC-TV broadcast by mail on a DVD to watch at your convenience.- Further, we will increase our communication with your regional/provincial association and assure their publications include the expansive and detailed Angus news and information you want and need.

Communicating with our Nation’s Commercial Cattlemen, our Bull Buyers We have determined the following four key priorities with respect to commercial cattlemen:1. Facilitate their interest in purchasing registered Angus bulls and assuring that ownership is transferred to them;2. Have ‘Angus Pride’ to buy and use Angus tags, branding their calves as Angus;3. Selling cattle at designated fall feeder calf sales and working with designated feedlots;4. Provide assistance with networking between all industry sectors by: a. a revised Angus Marketplace on our CAA website; b. making other buyers or links in the value chain aware when Angus cattle are being sold (i.e. privately, commercially, large sales, et al) assuring everyone has opportunity to purchase.

To assist with the priorities identified above, we have further established three key objectives to reach and engage our ‘best friends’, Canada’s commercial cow/calf operators who buy bulls.1) Enhance our database of contact information to include increased means of engagement, including e-mail addresses, websites and mobile numbers for the purpose of texting;2) Creation of mechanism for CAA members to access and promote to this list, while maintaining confidentiality of their commercial buyers’contact information. By the end of this year, we will share with you our service plan to send flyers, brochures and even catalogues to your specified target geographic location within our national commercial mailing list. At this same time, we will NEVER share this list with anyone within our Association, or any other group or business, to assure you that your buyers’ contact information will NEVER be shared with your fellow Angus producers and competitors.

Increased Opportunities for CAA Members to Advertise Further to the point raised just above regarding your new ability to have your promotions targeted to our CAA commercial mailing list for a fee, in addition to new advertising access through our e-blasts and broadcast, we will also be announcing new electronic advertising opportunities over the next two years. Revamped Angus Marketplace on your CAA website:• Remove existing website and searchable database;• Replace with weekly e-mail listing upcoming member sales (including private treaty sales) and requests received by the office (buyers looking for cattle or genetics, international visitors looking for work experience, tour groups, etc.) and posted online (similar to Feeder Calf Listing but with a purebred focus).

Additional Means of Communication Posters and Advertisements:• CAA field staff will provide Canadian Angus posters at targeted locations with messaging supporting our national Angus cause;• We will continue with our annual Canadian Cattlemen magazine two-page full-colour advertisement of Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed feeder calf sales in their August or September issue;• Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed feeder calf and bred heifer sale posters will be provided to auction markets with date, time and sale location for each participating location;• Advertising and branding supplies will be provided for regions/provinces to use.

Bull sale packages will be made available to every CAA member for your bull sale including:• Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed tag order forms;• Allflextag information;• Upon request, Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed coffee cups. Cups will be provided free of charge and members will pay for shipping.

Today’s Angus Advantage 44

Late calvers are a fact of life, but it is especially frustrating when it is one of your better producers. If your calving season is longer than 2 to 3 months catching up a late calver can be a real problem; however, I might be able to provide a few suggestions to help these girls become valued members of your herd.

In order to maintain a 12-month calving interval most cows really have only about 42 days, or 2 cycles to get pregnant. I will explain: The average gestation length is 283 days; 365 - 283 leaves 82 open days. But, at least 40 of these days are required to clean up the uterus and resume normal ovarian cyclicity leaving 82 - 40 = 42 days, or two 21-day cycles, for pregnancy to be established. Cows that have been compromised through poor nutrition or disease will require even more days before they begin to cycle; this could be as many as 50 or 60 at the very least. Twins, retained placenta, inadequate mineral supplementation, are commonly cited explanations for delayed cyclicity yet the most common cause may be inadequate energy in the diet. Most of us overwinter cattle with dried hay and in many cases, despite how nicely it was put up, the energy provided by feeding hay alone is not enough to support lactation and the resumption of cyclicity; especially, if you are calving during the winter or early spring. Inadequate energy in the ration is even worse for first-calf heifers because they must also meet their demands for growth. Protein content of the diet certainly must be considered as well. Most of us produce feed of different qualities and feed testing is a very useful way to allow you to manage your feed supplies to your best advantage.

Cows and heifers should be cycling before the onset of the breeding season.

The first post-calving heat is often “silent” – ovulation occurs, but the animal does not display estrus. Not even a bull will detect this heat. The second heat may not be that great either. In fact, cows that have had 2, 3 or more heats before the beginning of the breeding season are more likely to become pregnant early in the breeding season than those that do not.

Bull issues and abortion are other causes of delayed pregnancy.

What can we do to help these cows catch up? I once believed an old tale that it would take 5 years for a cow to be moved back to the first 3 weeks of the calving season. Of course it depends on how far she got behind! My

personal experience has been that with good nutrition and reliable bull power a 6-week gain in a single year is relatively easy to achieve. Of course, one of the best nutritional sources in my arsenal is “Vitamin Green Grass”! Banked grass from last fall is not likely to fit the bill. If your breeding season is to begin before grass is available then supplementing with grain and possibly a protein supplement along with minerals and vitamins will be necessary.

CIDRs may be used to shorten the number of days to conception.

Another way to catch up late calvers is to employ estrus synchronization. Estrogens, prostaglandins and other injections are not the ticket; the single best thing you can do is to use a CIDR® (Controlled Internal Drug Release) intravaginal progesterone-releasing device. The sustained progesterone concentrations achieved through the use of the CIDR have been shown to mimic the kind of progesterone profiles typical of a cycling cow and will initiate normal estrous cycles in non-cycling cows.

Most estrus synchronization protocols involve the placement of a CIDR for 7 to 8 days. Longer may result in poor quality ovulations and lowered pregnancy rates; therefore, 7 days should be sufficient when using a CIDR to advance cyclicity. When the CIDR is removed it is a good idea to inject prostaglandin F2alpha (or an analogue) i.e. Lutalyse®, Estrumate®, Estroplan® intramuscularly to ensure that estrus will occur. Also, if the uterus has even a mild infection the prostaglandin will help to clean it up. But remember, as I mentioned already, prostaglandin F2alpha alone will not induce estrus in non-cycling animals, only exposure to progesterone.

Wait until at least 6 weeks post-calving before inserting a CIDR.

Uterine repair requires 6 weeks to be completed. Prior to that, there may be low-grade bacterial infections that can flourish under the influence of progesterone from the CIDR. Furthermore, research has shown that the use of a CIDR to decrease the number of days to conception in cows that calved less than 50 days before offered no benefit over doing nothing at all. You must also consider your bull power if you are using natural service. I would conservatively suggest no more than 5 to 6 animals be treated at a time for breeding with a single mature bull.

Dear Angus Advantage Editor,I am troubled by the mistrust the CAA directors and staff have developed of their members with the DNA test requirements that are being tied to the privilege of registering calves. Any bull siring registered calves will have to have his parentage proven by testing of sire and dam. This implies that 1: the application is not truthful and 2: that sires for commercial customers with unregistered calves can be by bull “Anybody.” The commercial customer and ultimately the consumer controls the survival of any breed. Producers with misleading pedigree and performance records are self-eliminating. You can only fool a customer once. Can you imagine the progress to be made in a breed if genomic tests were tied to registration on a voluntary basis? Registration age could be moved to nine months when proper performance, physical, disposition and genomic results could be available. The calf could be registered for a half price fee and his customer’s success will be his further compensation in the increased value of his animals. Also to be tied to registration privileges, is a compulsory test for calves born with extra limbs. To quote the association; “there has been no report of this defect in Canada.” Yet we will have to test every calf. Really?According to association policy, we do not have to look for carriers of these genetic defects in animals born before certain qualifying dates. Their passing on defection genes to the breed population will apparently not have the same effect as an animal born after that date passing on the same defect. My suspicion is that the association has directed some white lab coat somewhere to conjure up a DNA test for Angus Association members, to see if we are qualified to be Angus breeders.

Today’s Angus Advantage 70

By the sign of the Chinese Zodiac, the year of Two Thousand and Fourteen is the Year of the “Horse,” but in North America, the market is setting up to be the Year of the “Beef Cow”...or looking in a broader scope....the “Decade of the Beef Female.” With our neighbours south of us reporting a sixty-one year low in their nation’s cow herd and production in the beef industry dropping to a twenty year low, the future is ominous...a beef shortage! Although the Canadian cowherd has shrunk, it has not depleted as much as that of the Americans. The high price of slaughter cows will entice aging ranchers and producers to further liquidate, taking advantage of strong market values and there are few signs of females retained for the restocking process as producers and feedlot operators recoup losses from the past decade. The last few years of strong grain prices has led to grasslands cultivated and put back into cereal production and fences torn out ...fences which will not be replaced. As population and pavement has increased, the majority of production of beef cattle in North America is west of the north and south line drawn by the Mississippi River. Although weather patterns in Canada have been very favorable for cow/calf producers, adverse conditions in the United States have spurred liquidation, especially, in grazing states where drought conditions linger. The rancher is not the only one affected by the weather, as the drought in California has drastically affected fruit and vegetable production. California is the largest supplier of leaf vegetables (leaf lettuce, romaine and spinach), making up over eighty percent of the North American supply. Producers are quoting double and triple price increases in fruit and vegetables in order to maintain production, which will be a big hit to Mrs. Consumer’s food budget. Retail prices of beef have been gradually increasing over the past several years and surprisingly, North American beef consumption has slightly increased even though we must consider it as a luxury item. Packers and retailers have adapted new cuts to give Mrs. Consumer viable and affordable options for the dinner table. One thing is for certain...the North American consumer will take more out of their pay cheque in order to put food on the table; as has been the case in Europe and other countries in the world. So where does the Canadian producer fit in the future scheme? Much of what has happened in the past will not change...we are net exporters and our largest trading partner will remain our neighbors south of the forty-ninth parallel. But for American producer’s ability to restock their ebbing cow herd, they will look to their two neighboring countries for young breeding females...females which will suit and adapt to their production practises...Canada being the ideal source. The strength of our market in Canada will be led by the United States...whether they are struggling to keep packing plants in operation or restoring their depleted cow numbers. It will be COOL to be Canadian! As seed stock producers, we must think maternal and expand our marketing methods taking advantage of new marketing opportunities. Rising markets attract new customers...customers that no one knows...whether they are domestic or foreign...out of breed or out of industry. Since Putin’s actions in Eastern Europe will stymie any further trade in the area, we must look at a more accessible and lucrative trade in North America. There is no doubt that our breed and our females are ideal for the restocking process and we need lots of them. Forward thinking breed associations are rapidly changing to electronic communication with their breeder base...and breeders have followed suit through E-mail, Facebook and Twitter. To fit this method of marketing, each breeding operation must have a web site which is linked to a high volume marketing site, attracting viewers from all breeds and sectors of the livestock industry. The site must be maintained and updated to be current, since new viewers will search for product availability. In the livestock business, print marketing maintains its presence...we still want to view, read and compare...and if you are reading this editorial, it must mean that it works. Although I am from an older generation, I have found there are no computers in bathrooms and Tim’s doesn’t send e-mails. Plan to attend your 4-H club and Junior shows...your future customers. The T Bar Invitational is open to golfers of any calibre...a great event supporting youth...awesome fellowship and an opportunity to find new customers. For all you skeptics, 2015 is the “Year of the Goat”...so was 2003!
