Dear Cattlemen:Well it’s that time of year again, rush to get the sale catalog together and get those bred heifers that are ready to calve closer to

home. We would like to welcome you to the Eichacker Simmentals and JK Angus bull sale and thank you for your interest in our pro-grams. We know the choices for a seed stock supplier are numerous. We want to let you know we don’t take your faith in our programslightly. As we strive to improve the genetics from year to year (we used our 1st Simmental in 1971) rest assured the genetic defect sta-tus and herd health is always kept in check.

Once again we are excited to have the JK Angus crew be a part of the sale. They have a great set of bulls again this year and havemany of the same philosophies and integrity that we try to build our programs around. We have used the term “One Stop Bull Shop”and we get many favorable comments about the variety they have to choose from when they come here. A big part of that is because

of what JK Angus brings to the table, and besides Jeff’s good to have around, if you think you’re having abad day, just call Jeff, I’ll bet something happened there that will make your day not seem so bad!

On a personal note, the weather around here, like many of you, got hot and dry last summer. We hada big rain the 1st part of May then that was it for the rest of the summer. We relied on subsoil moistureand were hauling water by the end of summer. Grandma Cathy is totally excited about our new grandson,Hunter, and sometime soon Paul and Lindsay will be having their hands full with twins.

The insurance program we offered last year was a huge success. We cost share part of the premiumon mortality insurance to make it more affordable to you because your bull purchase is a major invest-ment. So we will once again offer the same program.

We want to Thank Glenn Kummer and his crew, Glenn is a cooperator herd for us, lastyear we put embryos in his cows. He did an excellent job paying close attention to detailsto make it a project that went smoothly. Several of the bulls were born under their watch-ful eye or at least the camera’s in the calving barn. Thanks Glenn and we look forward tothis spring’s calf crop.

Greetings fellow producers,As I sit here, pen in hand, it’s hard to believe that 35 years have passed

since we had our first bull sale, and yet I am reminded whenever I look in the mir-ror it must be so. My very first sale was held in Miller, SD when my good friendJohn Engstrom and I teamed up to offer a small group of bulls. What a learningcurve it has been since! I only wish I’d have kept a diary. I can’t begin to list thenames of everyone who helped to guide me along the way, but there were manyand to those I say “thank you.”

In many of these opening letters there is talk of the markets and good timescoming. We as producers have heard this many times and know it will happen.

I would just like to tell of what has happened to use in 35 years. When westarted gathering data, our weaning wgts. were 600# or less and we used a lot ofcreep feed to achieve those weights. We fed our cows what seemed to be a largeamount of corn silage and alfalfa and had trouble keeping them in good shape.This past year our weaning wts. were 700-800#. We feed our cows corn stover,bean straw, wheat straw, CRP and a little protein and they stay in good shape.

We used to feed our bulls a ration containing 15-20#/head of corn silageand hay, and we struggled to achieve 1200# ywts. This group of bulls has neverhad more than 8# of corn/head, the silage is from corn that adjusted 9-189bu/acre and grass hay, and our yearling wgts are pushing 1500#. We have beenable to achieve this through genetics. We always try to purchase some of the

best I see sell every spring.Luckily, I’ve got some goodpartners with the samevision as mine so we canafford to do this.

Over the years I’vesat at many sales andwatched lots of cattle sell. Isee many different pro-grams and philosophiesoffered. Right or wrong isevery individual’s decision. We are always striving to do what wethink we can do to keep us and our customers in the black. We believe in goodcattle that flesh easy & yet still have the size & eye appeal that cattle feedersdesire. I appreciate hearing from many of you telling me how well our calves havesold, or how well the cows are doing. It tells us we are on the right track.

In closing, I want to thank all of you for taking a look or using our program. Ialso want to thank the Eichackers for all they’s done for us over the years. Theyare truly a great family and have a great cattle program in place.

Calving Ease Score: We have put a column in with a calving easescore with 1, 2, 3 or 4 stars with 1 star being harder calving and 4 starsbeing the easiest calving score. The score is nothing scientific – it is justour opinions of what you could expect taking into consideration, BW,EPD’s, pedigree and structure of the bull. Do not compare the scoresbetween breeds, for instance, don’t expect the same calving ease out of aSimmental with 3 stars as a Red Angus with 3 stars, each breed needs tobe considered on their own. JKAngus bulls are marked in their footnotesas heifer bulls if we thought they would work on such.

Semen Interest: Eichacker Simmentals will retain 1/4 semen inter-est in all bulls sold and JK Angus will be retaining 1/3 semen interest inall bulls sold. Keep in mind, generally this means absolutely nothing, itonly comes into play if semen is collected and sold.

Adjusted Scrotal: Actual scrotal measurements were taken 1-23-2013 then adjusted to a year of age using each breeds own formula foradjusted scrotal measurements. Scrotal measurements for the JK Angusbulls are actual, not adjusted.

Weight Per Day of Age (WDA): WDA is the weight of a bullon 1-23-2013 divided by the days of age.

127 Day Weight: The 127 day gain was the average daily gainfrom the weaning weight until 1-23-2013.

Homozygous Black: Thirty additional Simmental bulls are beingtested for the homozygous black trait. When we receive the results wewill have the updated information on our website @ www.eichackersim-mentals.com or just give us a call.

A super nice, moderate bull that still offers a lot of the power thatChamberlain brings to the table. His WW & YW EPD's rank him inthe top 10% of the breed. He is a big middled bull that really cov-ers his tracks on the move. We feel he should calve easier than his#'s would indicate.

An ET brother to the Lot 1 bull, but carries a blaze face like hismother. He offers a little less BW and a bit softer made in hisstructure. He boasts those great set of EPD's and still a top endWDA and 127 day gaining individual. I'm sure you'll like his typeand kind.

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. This bull you need to see, becausehis picture does not do him justice. His disposition is wonderful and thosetypes of bulls don't picture well. He has a great hip and an explosive rear1/4 and a nice soft set in his rear pastern. Is in the top 10 on 127 day gainand #4 for WDA. Possibly his biggest asset may be the cow family that he comes from. He isbeing tested for Homo Black and Homo Polled.

This guy hit me pretty hard. Analyze this bull from the ground upand there is a lot of things that make a lot of sense. It is fun just towatch him move around. This April born bull just keeps coming onstrong being in the top end for WDA and 127 day gain. Can't gowrong buying bulls like this.

Get around behind this bull and I think you'll like what you see, (ifyou like them thick). Couldn't you imagine feeding a set of steerslike him. A real plus for this guy is his mother, we really like whatshe's done in the past and has a picture perfect udder.

He is a moderate framed, big bellied, solid red non-dilutor bull.Would be a good choice for either black or red cows, very universal.His maternal sister was our consignment to the BHSS as a bredheifer.

Looking for a red baldy bull, this guy is pretty cool. The way he is com-ing on, can't wait to see him sale day. he is the 6th highest gaining bullsince weaning and has a YW EPD that put him in the top 10% of thebreed. Study his structure, nice head, lots of middle and a great set ofwheels. To top it off, his mother had a very nice udder at calving time.

Here is a bull we feel has really brought himself to the top. From his atti-tude to his feet and leg structure, he is very complete. We could go on andon describing his conformation, but you just need to see him yourself. Wasthe 3rd highest gaining bull since weaning and has WW and YW EPD's thatrank him in the top 3% and 1% of the breed respectively.

"Raw Power" would describe Lots 27, 28 and 29. Our U56 cow is shaking out to be ahigh performance cow that has a WW ratio of 118 on two natural calves, then mateher to Chamberlain and you get the weaning and yearling weight #'s that are off thechart, top 1% of the breed. My thought would be that the Lot 27 looks to be theeasier calving of the 3. Lot 28, if disposition is a concern, I would not recommendthis bull. The U56 cow has a tremendous udder with just the right teat size, whichis one of the reasons we chose to flush her. We just had a flush of ET calves bornout of her, mated with WC United, that look to be very promising.

I'm only going to write one footnote here because, honest to God, they are like peas in a pod, very similar in structure and type. We know how well everyone liked the Beef King,Sim/Red Angus bulls last year, four sons averaged over $5700. We took it one step further and flushed what we felt was our best Red Angus cow to Beef King. She is pheno-typically awesome with an excellent set of numbers and a beautiful udder. She had a WW ratio of 117 on her 1st three calves. These four bulls should work excellent In any scenerio. Study the EPD's of this mating, truly amazing. Explanation of ASA’s New EPD Evaluations:Presenting Fall 2012 EPDs on a NEW BASE:

The Fall 2012 ASA Genetic Evaluation marks the first time major breeds have expressed their EPDs on a common base (i.e., the same scale). The common base was a naturalevaluation of the RAAA/ASA genetic evaluation partnership. Though forming a common base will initially lead to some confusion, the boards of both organizations unani-mously agreed that it was a positive step for the beef industry – a step that allows producers to directly compare genetic predictions from the largest multi-breed databasein the world.

As with any progress, there is change. Breeders and commercial producers will need to adjust to the new base.Much like converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius, it may be a struggle at first, however, over time we will all growaccustomed to the new scale. For example, look at the average EPDs of purebreds shown in this table to the right.

The changes to the base does not change the evaluation of animals; it just changes the magnitude of the EPD. Ithas the same impact on all animals. Be sure to use the new percentile tables to develop a “feel” for the new EPDbase.

Definition of TermsExpected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing ge-netic levels.Back Fat (BF): Inches of Backfat.Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

Explanation of How to Utilize API and TI IndexesFirst, determine which index to use; if you're keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPD's, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described,index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you canpay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a$50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd.
