Welcome to the 2015 Van Dyke Angus Ranch “Cattleman’s Advantage” Bull Sale!

2014 was a very eventful year for all of us in the cattle business, with never-before-seen record pricing for our calf product, being followed by the continued reduction in grain commodity pricing. This has strengthened and stabilized the calf market to a point where even when the futures markets want to become volatile, the live cattle trade in the country continues to stay consistent and strong! With feedstuff costs being very manageable and the cost of gain going down, the feeding industry is placing more value on each healthy live calf than on what that calf may cost per pound! We have seen throughout the past year that cattle are bringing close to the same dollar amount regardless if they weigh 550, 600 or even 700 pounds! This trend is likely to continue with the low inventory of cattle across the country and the lower grain prices that we have been seeing.

These factors are exactly why we, at VDAR, believe our focus on “Fertility & Maternity” will provide you, the commercial cowman, with genetics that will make you more money at the end of each year when you wean more total calves!

2015 has started with incredibly mild weather for us here in the Gallatin Valley, which has helped contribute to a wildly successful beginning to our calving season. At the time of writing this letter, 16 days into our calving season, VDAR has calved 262 cows and we have 265 live, healthy calves to show for it! We fully believe that the weather is not the largest contributor to this calving success. We believe that it is the small, unseen traits…the traits that are often unmeasured and targeted with an EPD, that play the biggest role in this type of success! The fact that the cow breeds first service and that she lays down and has a calf fast, easy and unassisted, and that she gets right up and mothers that calf immediately and does not turn and walk to the other side of the pasture! A calf that gets up so fast that it makes you shake your head in disbelief that it could possibly be standing already and aggressively attacks its mothers udder like it was the most important thing in the world (because it is)! The fact that she nurtures and protects that calf as a baby and right through to the end of her responsibility at weaning! Some people believe that all of those traits are a given, that all cows do that naturally? Well, we believe that is not the case and that the breed is full of cattle that through the decades have failed miserably in the areas of Fertility and Maternity!

Therefore, we are proud to be offering you 150 bulls that we have worked so hard to produce, bulls that excel in being sound and efficient, bulls that have been developed on a high roughage ration to be better suited to go out and perform for you! And, of course, bulls that have been bred for decades to do the little, unmeasurable things, the things that allow you to sell more calves and make more profit!

January 30, 2015To Van Dyke Angus Ranch:We did work on the rations for the Van Dyke 2015 Bull sale. We used all locally grown products into the rations this feeding season, with the

exception of distiller grains.The rations consisted of alfalfa hay, corn silage, and barley straw for the forages; corn and dried distiller grain were used as the concentrates.

The ration was also fortified with mineral and vitamins. The rations were set up in two stages with the final NEm of 78.0 Mcals and NEg of 49.0 Mcals achieved in late-December. Protein, fiber and energy were the main criteria for growth and conditioning the cattle. Adequate energy, protein, and high fiber (16.9 C.Fib) in this diet is help to increase longevity and solid conditioning in these cattle.

On a ration set for 2.5# gain, the bulls average closer toa 2.8# gain, same holds true with the 3.0# ration, the cattle average closer to a 3.25# gain. The overall gain on the 120 day test was about 3.2#.

I don’t feel the cattle were pushed beyond their genetic potential, in fact most of the calves out-gained the ration. As you can see from the final test weights, you are looking at the genetics working in these cattle.

Genetic DefectsThe American Angus Association has identified different genetic defects in the Angus breed. We are fortunate that we have very few of the affected pedigrees. However, when there is a possibility, all animals involved have been tested free of all known genetic defects.

Retained InterestVan Dyke Angus Reserves the Right to 1/3 semen interest in all sale bulls. The 1/3 semen interest is a semen revenue sharing interest only with 100% of the bull’s salvage value belonging to the buyer.

Terms & ConditionsAll cattle sell under the standard terms & conditions as adopted by the American Angus Association.

Settlement & DeliveryAll bulls are to be settled for sale day unless prior arrangements have been made. In regards to the bulls selling, Van Dyke Angus is offering to feed, maintain and fertility test for an approximate March 15 delivery. Free delivery is available in Montana and surrounding states. All bulls are fully guaranteed for one full breeding season.

Koupal Juneau 797 was our choice to add an outcross growth-sire to the VDAR program and we have been very happy with the results. The calves are heavy -structured and thick-made, set down on a big rugged foot that is symmetrical in its makeup. The 797’s combine this with being deep-bodied and wide-structured and gain and convert as you expect them to. The daughters that we have seen are moderate-framed cattle that are easy fleshing and very fertile and according to Lavern, they are some of the nicest females on his ranch.

Out of one of the most powerful daughters of VDAR Really Windy 4097 in our program, “707” as we call him, appears to be a slam-dunk calving ease sire whose calves grow and excel when on feed. The 707’s are extremely attrac-tive cattle that are heavy muscled with a great hip and excellent feet and legs. Semen is available through Bailey Patterson and Van Dyke Angus Ranch.

The following article is the fourth of our five-part series where we address the effects of making fertility your #1 culling criteria and why its impact on your herd is THe most effective thing you could do to improve your bottom line!

There is often a lot of talk about “optimum” production. The only problem is that there is virtually nothing “optimum” about the direction that the Angus breed has been going! It is human nature to find something that works or something that you need and then take it to an extreme. It has been happening throughout time with breeders of cattle, or for that matter, breeders of other species as well. Through the years we can look back at the dwarfism stage and the extreme high-milking cattle to the heavy-muscled phase and, of course, the giraffes of the 1980’s. none of these extreme approaches ever provided an overall benefit to the breed and, as a matter of fact, it caused more people that were breeding cattle to find another line of work or another hobby! Many of the great breeders from the past have advised “just stay the course and stay in the middle and as the pendulum swings back and forth, it will always come back to you.” While this is ultimately true, it is terribly frustrating to watch the Angus breed’s focus move from one wild direction to another every 4-5 years.

Today it is evident that many breeders, and to a large extent the Angus Association, are backing an extreme approach toward carcass EPD’s. “He is in the Top 1% for $B” or “she is the Top Marbling EPD female in the breed”…this is the type of language that is pervasive in marketing Angus cattle in recent years. From the Association’s stand point, I have a certain degree of understanding based on the incredible success of Certified Angus Beef. CAB has provided a platform to Angus breeders that has never before been available to any breed or breeders of cattle and it has been largely responsible for the extreme popularity in our breed today…however, single-trait selection, regardless of what trait it is, is a bad approach to breeding cattle! The end result of single-trait selection is never good because by definition, it leads to the lack of attention to all other productively related traits. Until recently, AI studs never even looked at the bulls they were putting into their lineups because all that mattered were the numbers. Fortunately, this is starting to change because sound-minded breeders from all over the country are starting to place demands on them to provide cattle that are structurally sound with good foot structure and that the sires should come from cows with an actual production record! Imagine that!

As for the purpose of addressing extremes that directly relate to fertility in your cowherd, we are going to touch on the following questions:

How high can we make weaning weights?

As we study our bull sale catalogs, it is evident that most of the cattle available for sale throughout the country have dramatically higher growth numbers than they did a decade ago. We might say “what could be wrong with that?” More weaning weight will only bring me more money when I sell my calves! However, there are a few things to always consider when increasing the weaning growth of our calves.

First of all, how will the “increased weaning weight” affect the feed resource of my ranch and the maternal capability of my cowherd? As we increase the weight of the calves off the cow, there are inputs that are required to increase those pounds of beef. As far as feed resource is concerned, that is pretty easy to measure, but the effect on the cow is a little more difficult to determine. It all comes back to fertility and the cow’s ability to wean heavier and heavier calves and still breed back. If we continue to pressure the cows to produce more and we continue to stretch the feed resource, we will press the cow’s ability to breed back. This is especially difficult for the two and three-year-olds, which are the cows we can least afford to lose. The cost of heifer development is one of the greatest expenses we incur and the last thing we want to do is have to sell a larger percentage than normal of young cows because of our desire to increase weaning weight by incremental amounts. This is a major reason why we need to continue to be diligent, and focus our efforts on breeding fertility into our cowherd, but even with tremendous dedication to breeding for fertility, we can still negatively affect their ability to breed back with decisions that place too high productive demands on the cow!

A very interesting thing happened in the cattle market over the past year or so. With calf prices at never-seen-before-highs, the grain market started to drop. With the cost of gain dropping dramatically, it started

to become evident that the cattle feeder was more interested in what each feeder calf cost per head than he was in the price per pound. As we continued to watch feeder sale after sale, we realized that most cattle were bringing within $50 of each other with as much a 200 pound difference in size! This was complete verification that fertility is even more important today than ever and by increasing calving percentage by 5-10 percent, the amount of profit you make far outweighs whatever increase you can make on increasing weaning weights!

Can milk production be too high?

We all have those cows that raise the biggest, fattest calves year after year and much of the time they are forever thin and each year at preg-test, we cross our fingers that they are bred and will calve on time! If we could make all our cows like this, we would! The problem is they do not breed back most of the time and that is why we don’t have more cows like that! It is never good to have cows that starve their calves, but those are easy to identify and eliminate. A cow who raises a calf slightly below the average is not ideal, but it is far more profitable than a cow that raises the heaviest calf one year and is open the next! Can we put too much milk into our cows? yes, we can, but the cows that milk too much do not last if you are diligent about your calving season!

is there a calf gender effect on fertility?

When we have our cowherds working to their optimum potential, the cow is producing a maximum amount of product (calf) while she is staying in good enough condition to breed back early in the calving season and is capable of staying in good flesh. There is a fine line in producing to their optimum and producing to the maximum. As you push the limits of production, you will ultimately find that the difference in the inputs it takes to produce a heifer calf compared to the inputs it takes to raise a bull calf, which may wean 50 pounds or heavier than their heifer mates, may be too much for that cow to produce and breed back effectively! This is a great barometer for you to use to help you analyze if you are pushing your cowherd to its limits. When your cows that have bull calves start to breed back at a lower rates than the ones raising heifer calves, you know that you have pushed them to their limits in terms of growth, milk and feed resource.

It is always tempting to try and maximize every aspect of production and to pursue those efforts that on the surface seem to lead us toward that ultimate end point! But never forget with all the data and information available to us, it is way too easy to think we can make all the right choices and be the best producer that has ever existed. Don’t forget that TOO much of a good thing is usually not the answer…there are only TWO things that we can never have enough of…FERTiLiTY & PROFiT!
