Calvin Charles “Charlie” Peltonwas born August 9, 1936 in ruralAvon, South Dakota, the son ofWayne and Viola (Deurmier)Pelton. He died Sunday, February 7,2010 at St. Michael’s Hospital inTyndall, SD. Charlie attained theage of 73 years, five months and 29days.

Charlie began school at MyrtleCountry School and graduatedfrom the eighth grade atMawhinney Country School.

Charlie worked as a farmer withhis parents and was brieflyemployed at Morgan’s in Yanktonand the Human Services Center inYankton. He moved into Avon in1971, where he worked odd jobs,but was best known for haulingtrash and leaves and mowinglawns.

Charlie’s greatest joy was work-ing with horses on the farm. He wasalways ready to talk about Sam,Dick, Florrie, Charlie and Butte.They were great memories for him.After moving into Avon, he wasseen in his green pickup, speedingaround town. Those who knew himalways knew he would let thempass him up if they were in a hurry.

Charlie entered the WagnerGood Samaritan Society inFebruary of 2002. He transferred tothe Tyndall Good SamaritanSociety on October 31, 2005.Charlie will be remembered for his“tooling around” in his wheel chairand keeping people on their toes.

Thankful for sharing his life arehis two brothers, Larry and wifeCharmaine and Ron and wife Linda,all of Avon; four sisters: EvelynKnoll and Myrtle Reiff, both ofAvon; Betty Sandau and husbandLawrence of Tripp; and CarolDraughon and husband, Lattie ofSpringfield; sister-in-law, JudyPelton of Avon; and many nieces,nephews, and great nieces andgreat nephews.

Charlie was preceded in deathby his parents; brother DonaldPelton; two brothers-in-law: EdgarKnoll and Raymond Reiff; twonephews: Jerry Knoll and JamesReiff; and great nephew, ChadrickHaire.

Mary Jane (Hayward) Grimmewas born on Monday, December14, 1931 at Avon, South Dakota toCharles and Maude (McLane)Hayward. She attended school inAvon and graduated from AvonHigh School in 1949. Mary was unit-ed in marriage to Harold H. Grimmeon June 5, 1953 in the United

Methodist Church in Tyndall. Theyfarmed southwest of Tyndall until1999. Mary loved the farm and itwas very hard for her to leavewhen they decided to retire. Shespent her entire married life work-ing next to her husband on thefarm. She also worked for severallocal employers throughout theyears. Mary never passed up agood game of pinochle, and herchildren often referred to her asthe Pinochle Queen. Another greatlove in her life was her grandchil-

dren, and she spent many hourswith them, passing on her wisdomand love of life. Mary had an infec-tious smile and was hardly everseen without one. She was a mem-ber of the United MethodistChurch, Ladies’ Aid, and the V.F.W.Auxiliary. Following Harold's deathin 2005, she moved for a time toTabor. Mary became a resident ofthe Good Samaritan Society ofTyndall in October of 2008. Shepassed away, surrounded by herfamily, on Sunday, February 7, 2010at Avera St. Michael's Hospital atthe age of 78 years, 1 month and 23days.

Mary's memory will be cher-ished by her children and the manyfriends and family she touchedthroughout her life. She is survivedby five children: Carol (Douglas II)Nygaard of Beresford, SouthDakota, Perry (Mary) Grimme ofBrookings, South Dakota, Lori(Alex) Swiatek of Lincoln,Nebraska, Roger (Tammy) Grimmeof Filley, Nebraska, Teresa (Dean)Sternhagen of Tabor, South Dakota;twelve grandchildren: Shannon,Joshua, Jonathan, Megan, Perry Jr.,Samantha, Megan, Jacob, Schuyler,

Carly, Katelyn, and Zac; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers:Dennis Hayward and AaronHayward; and four sisters: BettyPudwill, Charlene Nelson, ShirleyMiller, and Peggy Leisy.

In addition to her parents,Charles and Maude Hayward, Marywas preceded in death by her hus-band, Harold Grimme on December28, 2005; three brothers: Jim,Donald and Clarence Hayward; andfour sisters: June Hancock, OpalRadack, Patricia Neu, and AlvaJones.
