When Pasco County School Board mem-ber Alison Crumbley considers anticipatedgrowth along the State Road 54/56 corridor, she said, she is “taken aback.”
She worries about the school district’sability to provide schools for all of the stu-dents who will be moving into the newcommunities that are taking shape alongthat corridor.
Superintendent Kurt Browning sharesthat sentiment.
“That 54 corridor concerns me greatly,”Browning said, during a recent school boardworkshop on the district’s constructionplans.
“Our need certainly outpaces our re-sources,” the superintendent said. “Whenyou look at the 54 corridor, from really, LittleRoad to just beyond Wiregrass, that’s CurleyRoad — there is so much growth and pro-jected growth.
“Even up on Curley, there’s master-planned communities.
“As superintendent, it concerns me, be-cause I know moms and dads don’t wanttheir kids in crowded classrooms. And Idon’t want their kids in crowded class-rooms.
“Nor, do I want to build new schoolsand, the next thing you know, you see porta-bles being pulled up on those schoolcampuses,” Browning said.
The lack of revenue has prompted theschool district to launch an impact feestudy, which could lead to higher school im-pact fees paid for new construction ofresidential properties in Pasco County.
Meanwhile, the district is engaged in nu-merous construction projects and haveothers planned in the near future.
Chris Williams, director of planning, out-lined those projects during the board’sworkshop. He also provided additional de-tails during a separate interview.

Wesley Chapel company expects toexpand to new marketsBy B.C. Manionbcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
KeriCure Inc., a Wesley Chapel company, has secured a patent that is expected toopen new doors for partnerships with phar-maceutical and medical device companies.
“Our foundation of the company was ac-tually built around this nanoparticle drugdelivery technology that I helped to createat the University of South Florida,” saidKerriann Greenhalgh, who operates thecompany from her Wesley Chapel home.
The company, which launched in 2011,has been offering consumer products tohelp promote the healing of cuts andwounds on people and pets, through liquidbandages sprayed on the skin.
The polymer retains its elasticity, protect-ing the wound and allowing the cut to heal.
The products for people are sold underthe names Natural Seal Liquid Bandage,Natural Seal and Natural Seal on the Go, andare available at Publix, Kroger, PriceChoppers, Marsh and Meijer, and in naturalproduct stores throughout the UnitedStates.
The pet products are known as ToughSeal for Pets and Champion Seal, and areavailable online and at some feed stores.
The company also has a professional lineof liquid bandage products, under the nameof KeriCure’s Advanced Seal — Rx forMedical Use. That formulation is used byphysicians in various cosmetic, dermatologi-cal, burn, wound care and post-surgical

Home BancShares Inc., the parent com-pany of Centennial Bank, and FloridaBusiness BancGroup Inc., parent companyof Bay Cities Bank, are merging.
Home BancShares will acquire FBBI for$101.6 million, an amount that is the secondlargest paid for a Florida bank since 2007.The bank in the past three years has alsobought Heritage Bank of Florida in Lutz, andFlorida Traditions Bank in Dade City.
A closing date on the purchase will be inOctober.
“I think it is a good thing for our share-holders,” said Gregory Bryant, Bay Cities’president and chief executive officer.
Customers also should benefit frommore services and products that can be of-
fered by the resulting larger company. After the acquisition, Home BancShares
will have about $8.5 billion in total assets.Headquartered in Arkansas, the banking cor-poration has locations there and in Florida,Alabama and New York City.
“We look forward to adding Bay Cities’experienced bankers to our team and toserving the customers of Bay Cities by pro-viding the same friendly, local service theyhave grown accustomed to, while also pro-viding increased resources through thecombined franchise,” Centennial ChiefExecutive Officer Tracy French, said in anews release.
The Tampa-based Bay Cities brings morethan $540 million in total assets, $391 mil-lion in loans and $461 million in depositsinto the deal, the release states.
“We built a franchise in a good market,”
Bryant said. “I think the price reflects that.”The bank currently has six branch loca-
tions in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, and in Sarasota. There also is a loan compa-ny in Clearwater.
Details on the transition are beingworked out, and it is not clear yet if any lo-cations will close, Bryant said.
The merger is part of a trend that hasemerged since the financial crisis of morethan five years ago, he said.
One reason is that low interest rates areaffecting banks’ operating margins. But an-other issue is the increase in bankingregulations in response to the crisis. Smallerbanks, in particular, are burdened with ab-sorbing regulatory costs, Bryant said.
“I think there is some pressure on thebanking sector that would suggest consoli-dation is going to continue,” he said.

BizWalks survey highlights Zephryhills’ market powerBy Kathy Steeleksteele@lakerlutznews.com
As community leaders talked recentlywith business owners about their job needs,it became clear that many were looking tohire military veterans. But they didn’t knowhow to get the word out.
That disconnect became the first chal-lenge identified in the inaugural BizWalks2014-15 report, a survey sponsored by theGreater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerceand the Pasco Economic DevelopmentCouncil.
No one wanted to wait until the studywas finished. So effort started quickly tohold a workshop in March to link those em-ployers with community organizations andthe resources to get something done.
“There was a tremendous response,” saidVonnie Mikkelsen, out-going executive direc-tor of the chamber of commerce.Mikkelsen’s last day on the job is July 3.
That kind of quick action in support ofthe business community is one outcome ofwhat Mikkelsen hopes will be an annualBizWalks survey. Long-term, the surveymight be done quarterly, she said.
The chamber has done business surveysperiodically.
But BizWalks is more targeted and drills
deeper into the opinions and issues facingbusiness owners, especially in high-growthsectors of manufacturing, aviation, distribu-tion and startups.
Those are the businesses that drive eco-nomic growth, Mikkelsen said.
The idea for BizWalks took off soon afterMikkelsen attended a conference on how toretain and expand businesses. She heardfrom others who had done similar“BizWalks” surveys in their communities.
Over a six-week period in late 2014, vol-unteers completed 16 on-site visits and 26anonymous online surveys.
Participating businesses included FlightCrafters, Turin Aviation Group, SkywatchSigns, Goin’ Postal, Zephyr Aircraft Enginesand Skydive City.
The staff members at the PascoEconomic Development Council partneredwith Zephyrhills’ chamber and a committeeof volunteers to coordinate activities, offerinterview training and aid in crunching thedata for the final report.
The Zephyrhills Economic DevelopmentCoalition will use the data to craft an 18- to24-month plan of action to tackle issues suchas infrastructure, work force developmentand the bureaucratic world of business regu-lations. Those were identified as the toppriorities among business owners.
“We’re not only out there to gain a betterknowledge and pulse of the business com-munity, but also to take action andchampion these things,” Mikkelsen said.
Overall, business owners were upbeatabout the future.
About 82 percent said they feltZephyrhills was moving in the right direc-tion in creating a business-friendlyatmosphere.
About 38 percent said they planned tohire additional employees in the next sixmonths. And, none were planning layoffs.
Sales volumes are increasing, and thetrend is expected to continue during thenext 12 months.
Half of business owners said they wouldexpand facilities in the next two years, and60 percent expected to invest in new equip-ment.
Growth is not being hindered due to lackof capital or financing, and that trend likelywill continue.
The survey also showed the commercialreach of Zephyrhills, which is strategically lo-cated near major road systems with accessto markets beyond Pasco County and theTampa Bay region.
That reach may be surprising to some. Many Zephyrhills companies sell
statewide and nationwide. About 45 percent
of surveyed companies reported internation-al sales to Europe, Africa, South America, Asiaand the Mediterranean.
“There are a lot of gems here,” saidMikkelsen. “It’s truly a remarkable coming ofage for Zephyrhills.”
The report establishes a foundation forfuture spin-off activities and programs thatbolster Zephyrhills’ ongoing economicgrowth. As future reports are done, trendscan be spotted and opportunities canemerge, Mikkelsen said.
The implications go beyond this one re-port, said John Hagen, president of the PascoEconomic Development Council.
“It’s a good thing to do for the communi-ty, but it also is a template for othercommunities,” he said. “What we’re trying toaccomplish, other than just working inZephyrhills, is to work out a methodologythat we can then duplicate and use in othercommunities and with other chambers.”
In the future, Hagen said he anticipatesefforts to share the Zephyrhills’ experienceas a model of how to conduct a proactivebusiness survey. It was the first locally initiat-ed program of its type in Pasco County.
“That is something for Zephyrhills to betruly proud of,” said Mikkelsen. “We did it be-cause we needed to, but that is an indicationthat we did it right. It’s really exciting.”

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
With school out for summer, more teensare on the road and more families are tak-ing vacations or enjoying weekendoutings.
It’s easy to get distracted, and it neverhurts to hear some reminders on drivingsafety.
It’s an important issue. The Florida Department of Health
points to statistics compiled by the Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention to re-mind people of just how important it is touse care when driving.
In 2013, Florida’s age-adjusted injurydeath rate for unintentional motor vehicleinjury was 12.46 percent per 100,000 peo-ple, according to CDC figures.
“Responsible driving habits keep ourcommunities safe and healthy for every-one,” State Surgeon General and Secretaryof Health Dr. John Armstrong said in a newsrelease. “It is especially important for adultsto model safe-driving skills for our futuredrivers.”
To reduce your risks of transportation-
related injury, the National Safety Councilrecommends:
• Designating a sober driver or makingother transportation arrangements
• Driving the appropriate speed forconditions
• Getting plenty of sleep before youdrive and scheduling regular breaks toavoid getting tired
• Avoiding cellphone use while driving, even a hands-free device causes distraction
• Practicing with your teen, even afterhe or she is licensed. Parental involvementreduces teens’ crash risks.
According to the National SafetyCouncil, half of teens will be involved in acrash before graduating from high school.
Survey results from Liberty Mutual andStudents Against Destructive Decisions(SADD) indicate that teens succumb tomore risky in-vehicle behaviors during thesummer months. These behaviors lead tomore crashes, serious injuries and deathsthan during the school year.
The National Safety Council reports thatnearly 100 people die every day on ourroadways, in preventable car crashes due to
alcohol, speeding, fatigue and distraction.According to Danielle Branciforte from
the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition,“The top three reasons teens die in crashesare because of inexperience behind thewheel, distracted driving (cellphones, peerpassengers, eating, etc.) and speeding.”
Daphne Lampley, of LiveFree! Coalition, said “Adults play a crucial role in makingsure that when teens get behind the wheel, they understand they are in control of theirlives and not invincible from danger.”
Below are tips from LiveFree! and theirpartners that you can use to talk with teensto help keep them safe while driving.
• Limit the number of passengers al-lowed in the car while your teen is driving
• Tell your teen to power off their cell-phone, and to put it in a purse or glovecompartment so they are not tempted touse it while driving
• Remind your teen that underagedrinking is illegal, and they must not drink
• Wear a seatbelt. • Obey posted speed limit signs. For more information, visit

Lutz resident John Straumann was playingtennis several months ago and was trying tokeep statistics on how his shots were goingduring a match.
It wasn't going well."One of the biggest things was trying to
track unforced errors versus winners, and Iwas trying to do it in my head. It was impossi-ble," said Straumann, who was then living inWashington. "I started thinking, well, this newApple Watch is coming out. I wonder if Icould do something so I could track the stuffmyself."
Like many people, Straumann thought hehad come up with a pretty good idea for amobile device application. But unlike the vastmajority of those people, he actually designedthe app, tested it and brought it to market.
ScoreIt! Tennis is now available in Apple'siTunes App Store.
Straumann graduated from the Universityof South Florida with a degree in computerscience and engineering, and works in soft-ware sales, so it might sound like designingan app would be easy for Straumann.
After all, he'd been doing it for years. There was just one problem: All his experi-
ence was with the Microsoft Windowsplatform. Apple's operating system is differ-ent, and he didn't own an Apple computer oran iPhone. He didn't even own the watchthat was supposed to be the platform for hisnew app.
So, he invested about $5,000 in the cur-rent technology and taught himself the insand outs of Apple hardware and software.
He spent a couple of hours in theevenings after work and got up early onSaturday mornings to write and test the appbefore his family woke up.
During the same time frame, the familyalso was moving from Washington to Lutz.
It may sound like a lot of sacrifice and ef-fort but, for Straumann, it was a form ofchallenging fun.
"It was almost more interesting to me be-cause it was new. It was learning somethingnew, taking on a new project, a new technol-ogy," he said.
In less than two months, he had an appready to go.
Wearing an iWatch, a tennis player canrecord his or her statistics during a match. With a couple of swipes after each point, players can record what type of shots theyhit and how they fared. If there's an un-forced error, the player can log it was aforehand, backhand or serve return, for ex-ample. For winners, slices, drop shots, lobsand other types of shots can be recorded in-stantly and analyzed later.
Designing an app is one thing, but mak-ing it useful is another. And Straumannwanted to make sure it would work as wellon the court as it did on his computer.
"The biggest things were ease of inputand connectivity," he said.
Because the iWatch has to be in constantcommunication with a companion iPhonefor the app to work, he had to make sure theconnection would be strong from variousdistances on a tennis court. And he didn'twant recording each shot to interfere withthe natural flow of a game. Once a playerlearns how to use the app, recording statis-tics should take about a second, he said.
Once he had a useful app, he obtained adeveloper program membership and sent itto Apple for their testing and review. If theyapprove it, it's ready to go. But if there's aproblem, Straumann said they don't offermuch insight into what's wrong.
He had to wait a couple of weeks to getthe verdict.
Apple responded with the green light. Soit was ready for market, right?
Not quite. It turns out that Straumannwas a harsher critic than Apple itself.
"I wasn't happy with what I had done, soI rejected it myself and then submitted itagain," he said. After a couple more tweaks, and a little more back and forth, both sideswere happy, and he felt good about what hehad produced.
The app has only been out for a matter ofweeks, but Straumann is happy with the re-sponse he's seen so far. At $1.99 (with noads), Apple gets about 25 percent of the ten-nis app revenue, allowing Straumann to seea little monetary compensation for his ef-forts as well.
And the ScoreIt! app family has alreadygrown. A golf app for the iWatch is designed
to help players keep score on their watchesand input data based on the particularcourse they're playing. An update to the ten-nis app also lets players use it to keep scoreif they'd prefer to do that instead. Anotherfeature allows a parent or coach to track ten-nis stats via a non-watch device while theplayer is on the court.
The new app business is a family affairfor the Straumanns. The website introducesdaughters Alex (marketing and social media)and Avery (gameplay consultant), as well aswife Patti (graphics) as important team part-ners.
And while he considers designing appsfor Apple devices to be a fun project (he'snow a fan of their products), Straumann saidthe tennis app has real-world uses for peo-ple looking to improve their game.
By analyzing the statistics, trends will de-velop that show what areas are strengths fora player and what areas need more work inpractice, he said.
"I think if they really use it, they can lookat things they can improve," he said.
For more information, visit ScoreIt-app.com, or look up ScoreIt! Tennis inApple's App Store.

PHOTO COURTESY OF JOHN STRAUMANNThe app is designed to be utilized on thecourt during a game. Straumann said itshould only take about a second to inputthe necessary data.
MICHAEL MURILLO/STAFF PHOTOJohn Straumann's work center in his Lutz home is more like a command station, with desk-top computers, laptops and smartphones working together on his projects. It's where hedeveloped the ScoreIt! sports apps for the Apple iWatch in his spare time.

As a mother with two young children,Miriam Cook wanted to find inexpensive, family friendly things to do. The Land O'Lakes resident would search the Internet forfun places to go, but was frustrated that itwasn't as easy as it should have been.
"I was watching online and couldn't real-ly find anything that was what I wanted, with events and stuff like that," Cook said."So I thought, I have to create my own."
Around eight months ago, she did justthat. Now, FamilyFriendlyTampaBay.com is adestination for thousands of users eachweek, highlighting local freebies, cheapmovies and other low-cost activities thateveryone in the family can enjoy.
Cook takes her job as event seeker seri-ously, with specific criteria in mind whenshe's looking for places to go. She's lookingfor places that appeal to all family members,so children of all ages can have fun. Alcoholcan't be the focus of the event, she said, andaccommodations like restroom facilities areimportant.
Price matters, too, of course.Cook uses her own family as a template.
She has two sisters with children who are in
the education field, and she wants to high-light events that families like theirs canafford.
As a former preschool teacher herself, she knows that families often have to stickto a tight budget, and the event has to besomething that fits, or is worth saving for ifit's pricier.
Her website is finding an audience. Sherecords about 225,000 page views a month, with about 54,000 different users in thattime frame.
And they're sharing their opinions too, which Cook says makes her project unique.
"There are a couple sites that are similarto mine, but none of them have reviews."Readers can find ideas on the website, thengo on the Facebook page and share theiropinions about what they did.
Cook brings her own review committeewith her when she attends events. If daugh-ters Jasmine, 5, and Hazel, 3, want to go backto a destination, Cook knows she has a win-ner. And on weekends, husband Ben joins inas well.
Still, it takes work to keep a popularwebsite running and current with the latesthappenings. She spends time each day re-searching deals in the area, and her emailinbox is full of messages from different busi-
nesses and public relations companies. Shefilters through the offerings and compilesthe list she thinks represents the best ofTampa Bay.
The site isn't a moneymaker yet, butCook can see it growing into a business inthe future. She's already planning expan-sions into other markets such as Orlandoand Miami.
But for now she's working toward build-ing the site's popularity and gaining thetrust of local families. And the positive feed-back she's received from friends and peopleat her church is an indication that she's onthe right track.
"My focus has really just been trying toget the word out that my website's here tohelp people out," Cook said.
Cook also wants those families who visitthe site to attend and support as manyevents as possible, which will encouragecompanies to take note of the demand forevents that go easy on a budget and every-one can enjoy.
"If we go and participate in these events, then they're more likely to cater to familiesand make sure that their events or their lo-cation is more family friendly," Cook said.

A thriving business in Carrollwoodprompted the Kim family to open NaturalMarket II in Land O’ Lakes.
Now nearing its first anniversary, thestore is settling into its new community andgiving customers another choice for locallygrown fruits and vegetables.
The store also stocks an eclectic mix ofAsian, Latin and American grocery staples.
A recurring plea from Carrollwood cus-tomers who had moved to Pasco Countyprompted Jeff Kim to search for a secondlocation for Natural Market.
That, and the chance for a new begin-ning in a high-growth area like Pasco.
“They’ve been asking us to open,” saidKim. “Finally, it’s time.”
On a drive down Land O’ LakesBoulevard, Kim spotted a vacant gas stationat 4204 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., at the Bell LakeRoad intersection.
It was not in the best of shape, he re-
called. “Everything had to be cleaned out.”From the start, the grocery business has
been a family affair.Kim and his family came to Tampa from
Korea nearly 30 years ago when he was ateenager.
The family opened its Carrollwood mar-ket, at 4441 Gunn Highway, about 18 yearsago.
Kim divides his time betweenCarrollwood and Land O’ Lakes. His son,Yong Son, is manager of the Land O’ Lakesstore.
Customers say they appreciate the familyfriendly atmosphere.
“We love that it’s local and a lot of theveggies come from local farmers,” said DianePolson, who stopped by recently to pick upfresh tomatoes. “That’s my No. 1 biggie.”
She also likes the purified water systemthat Kim has recently installed. “It’s anotherbonus,” she said.
The bins at Natural Market are filled witha variety of fruits and vegetables. Some arefamiliar such as cantaloupe, tomatoes and
apples. But it is a place to find the unfamiliaras well, including dragon fruit, sapota fruit, rambutan and longan.
Freshness and uniqueness is whatNatural Market strives for. Raw honey, beepollen, herbs, fresh-squeezed juices andfarm-fresh eggs are a small part of the foodsstocked on shelves and in refrigerators.
Kim also points with pride at the freshlycut flowers and flower arrangements.
Shopping for the market is always apleasure, he said.
“It’s from experience. You go to the mar-ket every day. You see all the uniqueproduce. It is something that connects withme,” he said.
Natural Market keeps it fresh and in the family

By Mike MatthewSpecial to The Laker / Lutz News
In just a few months, business owners whoprocess credit card payments will benefit from a
favorable new rule regard-ing Fraud Liability — solong as they meet certaincriteria.
“Beginning in October,2015, the liability onfraudulent transactionsswitches to the issuingbank instead of the mer-chant, so long as the mer-chant is able to processcredit cards that have thenew chip technology,”
explains Terry Inman, President and CEO ofVecter Technologies, LLC. “The new chip tech-nology is known in the industry as EMV (EuropayMasterCard Visa) which is a technical standardfor smart payment cards.”
“However, businesses that are unable toprocess smart cards will continue to be liable forfraudulent transactions,” Terry explains.
In order to benefit from this importantchange, Vecter Technologies is updating its cur-rent customer base, while also helping new mer-chants, by providing compliant credit card pro-cessing equipment needed to process EMV trans-actions.
“Vecter loans EMV capable equipment toqualifying merchants at no cost,” says Terry.“Vecter never leases equipment to its customers,as equipment is constantly changing to meet pro-cessing demands. In many cases, merchants arestuck in a lease where the equipment they areusing is no longer a viable solution. Lease optionscan be a costly investment to the merchant.”
Terry goes on to say, “We encourage business-es to upgrade their equipment which will allowthem to accept EMV, near communications, andswipe transactions now, and not wait until theliability shift in October.”
EMV cards, or smart cards, which have beenin use for years in Canada and Europe, have asmall computer embedded in them which signifi-cantly reduces credit card fraud.
“These smart cards help with fraud preventionand will not be usable if a thief attempts to skim
the card numbers, which is unfortunately some-thing that can happen with magnetic stripe cardstoday,” Terry stated. “Even though Pay at thePump stations and ATM locations are prevalentto these type of fraudulent transactions, the FraudLiability shift for these services will not go intoeffect until October, 2017. The reason for thedelay is due to the significant equipment invest-ment and the limited number of certified instal-lation technicians across the country.”
“The liability shift gives issuing banks a realincentive to provide customers with EMV creditcards,” Terry said, “even though they are moreexpensive to manufacture than traditional mag-netic stripe cards commonly used today.”
“This means smart cards will quickly becomethe standard card used by most consumers. It’sessential that businesses update their processingequipment so they are ready to accept smart cardtransactions,” Terry noted.
In addition to providing credit card processingservices, Vecter Technologies has a proprietarypoint of sale system (POS) called TotalCommerce. It also offers an industry specificPOS system for cigar merchants called FuegoTotal Commerce, and a software applicationspecifically designed for private schools calledTotal Campus, in order to provide a cashlessenvironment. In addition to having their ownfrontend gateway, they are also certified on mostPoint of Sale software solutions including tabletsystems such as BreadCrumb, iConnect, andShopKeep.
Vecter Technologies, with sales offices in 22states, differs from its competitors as its salesagents earn a portion of the residual revenueinstead of an up-front commission. “This createsa personal relationship between the agent andthe merchant. It also provides a real incentivefor the agent to assist in resolving any merchantrelated issues that may arise,” said Terry.
Vecter Technologies is a register Agent ofCitizens Bank NA, Providence, RI and utilizesWorldPay as its primary acquiring partner.
Terry and his wife, Kristan, are the sole own-ers of Vecter Technologies, LLC. The main officeis located in Land O’ Lakes, Florida. They wel-come calls from business owners wanting to learnmore about the upcoming industry changes andhow they can prepare their business for thefuture.

Buck Rollings is passionate aboutmaking trees healthy and safe, and hiscrew at Omega Tree Service shares hiscommitment.
Buck is the owner of Omega TreeService, a commercial tree trimmingcompany that has been in business forover 30 years. Buck bought the businessthree years ago when he retired from theU.S. Marines Corps after 20 years ofservice.
Buck was already a certified arborist(having owned orchards in Texas),before buying Omega. With the businesscame key crewmembers who had beenwith Omega for many years.
“The crew that came with Omega hasbeen invaluable, because they are keep-ing alive the craftsmanship of tree trim-ming by training our younger employ-ees,” said Buck.
Buck explains that tree trimming isan art that is dying — a skill that can’tbe found in books.
“It’s something you learn by doing,”Buck explains. “There’s a huge differ-ence between having the knowledge ofhow a tree should look, and then actual-ly being able to trim a tree safely andaccurately.”
Once you understand how treesshould be trimmed, it’s troubling whenyou see trees that are trimmed incorrect-ly, Buck says.
“There’s only one way to trim trees, and that’s the right way,” says Buck.
All of Omega’s crewmembers are cer-tified, and all participate in ongoingtraining with other arborists in the area,as well as enrolling in programs taught
by the University of South Florida.Because felling trees and trimming
massive tree limbs can be extremelydangerous, Omega’s employees aretrained to avoid accidents and knowhow to leave a tree so it’s safe for cus-tomers.
“Trimming trees improperly doesn’tjust make them less appealing visually, but it can actually make them very dan-gerous to homeowners. That is why weput so much time into training andmaking sure our work is done correctly,”said Buck.
Another priority of Buck and his staffis prolonging the longevity of their cus-tomers’ trees.
“We are very passionate about find-ing ways to preserve trees, instead ofdoing major work just for the money,”he said.
With Omega’s extensive experienceand equipment, it primarily focuses onlarger tree trimming jobs. Buck and hiscrew do a lot of work in Lutz and LandO’ Lakes because there are so manymature, older trees in this area.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
With school out for summer and fam-ilies enjoying vacations, more people arespending time outdoors.
And, in Florida, spontaneous rainshowers often occur during summer. Those storms often take the form of tor-rential downpours and lightning strikes.
The Florida Department of Healthwants to remind everyone to remain vig-ilant of severe weather.
“This summer, as you enjoy Florida'sgreat outdoors, stay ahead of severeweather by knowing the forecast andhaving a plan to get indoors," said StateSurgeon General and Secretary of HealthDr. John Armstrong, in a news release “Beprepared for any weather change, ex-pected or otherwise.”
In order to ensure all enjoy the outdoorssafely, it is important to understand the dan-gers of lightning and follow a safety plan incase of inclement weather. For the past 30years, lightning ranks just behind tornadoesand flooding in weather-related deaths, thenews release says.
“Florida averages more lightning strikesper square mile than any other state, andour abundance of outdoor recreational op-portunities makes lightning a very seriousconcern,” said Florida Division ofEmergency Management Director Bryan W.Koon. “Our Kids Get A Plan campaign is oneof the tools we use to address lightning safe-ty. Visit our website, KidsGetaPlan.com, foran interactive book about lightning safety,The 30/30 Rule, and to talk to your familyabout how you can remain safe when thethreat of lightning is present.”
The National Weather Service offers safe-ty tips to avoid the threat of lightning.
Here are some of those tips:• Know the weather forecast before you
head out and plan accordingly• Stay inside a safe structure, or inside a
vehicle during a thunderstorm to avoidharm from lightning
• Do not take cover in tents, patios, car-ports, baseball dugouts, greenhouses orsheds
• Avoid tall objects or high ground, stand-ing water, metal objects and open spaces
• Avoid showers, sinks, tubs, and electri-cal equipment such as computers andcorded telephones
For more information on the Kids Get APlan outreach campaign and for an online, interactive copy of The 30/30 Rule andother educational books, visitKidsGetaPlan.com.

The school district also is in the processof designing three new schools, ElementaryW in Wiregrass Ranch, Elementary B inBexley Ranch, and High School GGG on OldPasco Road, which will open as a school forsixth grade through 12th grade.
The district also is planning additionalschools in the Wesley Chapel area.
“Elementary W is the first of potentiallythree or four in Wiregrass,” Williams said dur-ing the board workshop.
The district is working on a new designfor Elementary B in Bexley Ranch, becauseit wants the school to accommodate morestudents than a typical district elementaryschool, Williams said.
Bexley Ranch will provide substantial re-lief for Oakstead and Odessa elementaryschools, Williams said.
Other future schools are proposed forthe Bexley Ranch area, and a future elemen-tary school is planned for Starkey Ranch. Afuture middle school is also proposed forStarkey Ranch, Williams said.
The district also already has purchasedland for a future school on the south side ofState Road 54.
The biggest concern about middleschool capacity is in the Wesley Chapelarea, Williams said.
High School GGG, which will servegrades six through 12, will provide signifi-cant relief to Wesley Chapel area middleschools and high schools.
Wiregrass Ranch High has so many stu-dents, it is going to a 10-period day for thenext two years to manage the number ofstudents on campus at one time.
High School GGG will have a capacity of1,900 students. It is expected to draw stu-dents from areas now assigned to WiregrassRanch and Wesley Chapel high schools, andWeightman and Long middle schools.
The district is using this approach be-cause it can’t afford to build both a highschool and a middle school. As populationgrows and demand increases, the districtplans to build Middle School HH at thesame location.
The boundary process for High SchoolGGG and Elementary School B is expectedto begin in about 18 months, the planning
director said.Williams said he is concerned about the
ability of Mitchell, Sunlake and Land O’Lakes high schools to absorb anticipated fu-ture enrollment.
“Land O’ Lakes (High), hopefully, whenwe remodel that school, we can add somecapacity. It’s not going to be enough forlong-term,” Williams said.
“We do have a high school site promisedto us in Bexley Ranch. That potentially isgoing to have a big impact, especially onSunlake.
“I continue to look for two additionalhigh school sites, one in the Land O’ Lakesarea and one in the (State Road)54/Suncoast Parkway area,” Williams said.
But he added: “Those are hard to comeby.”
“There is a high school site promised inthe River Landing area, that could potential-ly impact Wesley Chapel, Wiregrass andZephyrhills,” Williams said.
“It would be along the extension of StateRoad 56. It would be east of Mansfield, buton the west side of Morris Bridge Road.Zephyr Egg Property, if you’d ever heard ofthat,” he said.
School Board member Allen Altman saidhe’s worried that the increasing need tospend money on new construction willmake it that much harder for the district tomaintain the buildings it has.
It’s a known fact that proper mainte-nance saves taxpayers money in the longterm, but the district doesn’t have a choice. It must spend money to provide school ca-pacity, he said.
While the district considers its long-range plans and short-term needs, construction continues.
Elementary W, being built between JohnLong Middle School and Wiregrass RanchHigh, is set to open in 2016.
When it opens, it will be possible for stu-dents to attend elementary school throughcollege on the same street, since Pasco-Hernando State College’s Porter Campus atWiregrass Ranch is just down the road.
Williams expects the school boundaryprocess for Elementary W to begin inOctober or November.
That school will help relieve crowding atSeven Oaks and Double Branch elementaryschools, but the particulars of how that willbe achieved have not been determined yet.
“Seven Oaks really popped this year,”Williams said.
Meanwhile, in East Pasco, the school dis-trict will be building a new cafeteria, anddoing parking and traffic improvements atCox Elementary.
Pasco Elementary also is getting someimprovements, as plans call for remodelingseveral buildings, Williams said.
applications. With a patent granted in June,
Greenhalgh expects her unique polymer tobe used in a much broader array of applica-tions.
The patent “gives us the opportunity totalk to larger pharmaceutical companies —who have products, drugs, bioactives thatthey want to deliver topically — and tellthem we have a great, FDA-cleared system inplace now, and that we can incorporatetheir drug into and provide very sustainedrelease with our product,” Greenhalgh ex-plained.
“One area that we’re looking at is in theanti-cancer area,” she said.
“We would incorporate a very well-known anti-cancer drug into our polymersystem,” she said. Or, her product could beused to apply radiation seeds topically.
Patients could benefit from her compa-ny’s product, she said.
“The beauty of this is that they wouldn’thave to be getting exposed to massiveamounts of radiation. It would be extremelytargeted,” she said. “So, you would get rid ofa lot of the side effects that happen with ra-diation.
“That is a very serious opportunity,” shesaid.
KeriCure is currently talking to various
companies that have an interest in its tech-nology, Greenhalgh said, including 3M.“They have a couple of projects that they’reinterested in having us collaborate on.”
Greenhalgh said she launched the com-pany as a consumer products companybecause it was the smoothest way to raiserevenue.
“We really want to grow in the biotechspace and create products for advancedwound care, like chronic wounds and burnwounds,” Greenhalgh said. “We’re actually intalks with a couple of large wound carecompanies, as a private label. We do have avery interesting opportunity in front of usright now.”
“We’ve just been asked to go to CVS andpresent to its private label group of buyers,so they’re interested in bringing the producton as a CVS product,” she said.
“We just got picked up by CardinalHealth. They’re the largest medical productdistributor in the U.S.,” she said, adding hercompany will be attending Cardinal Health’strade show in Las Vegas this month.
It also is presenting at Winn-Dixie’s localbuyer division this week.
Greenhalgh grew up in New Tampa andgraduated from Wharton High School be-fore obtaining her bachelor’s degree anddoctorate from USF.
The scientist lives with her husband,Daniel Opp, and their son, Nolan Opp, nearQuail Hollow.

As a champion gymnast and pole-vaulter, Nikki Carroll relies on hersuperior balance. But when shefound out that she won the AmateurAthletic Union High School SullivanAward, she became uncharacteristi-cally shaky on her feet.
“I was just so shocked. I couldn’teven believe what she was saying,”Carroll recalled about the phone callconfirming she won the award. “Ihad to hold onto the table that wasnext to me. I almost fell on the floor.”
While the AAU hands out the awardto four male and four female athletesaround the country, just one of eachwins the top prize of $10,000 in schol-arship money. Carroll, who lives inLand O’ Lakes, beat out hundreds ofapplicants around the country to takethe top female athlete prize.
Her athletic accomplishments areimpressive – she’s a two-time highschool state pole vaulting champion, and she took the top all-around posi-tion for gymnastics at the AAU JuniorOlympic Games.
But, it takes more than physicalskill to win the top Sullivan prize. Inaddition to participating in at leastone AAU sport, athletes are also
judged on academics, leadership andcharacter, and had to prepare essayresponses on the application.
In those areas, Carroll also com-pared favorably to her peers. Shemaintained a 3.7 grade point averagein high school, coached younger ath-letes over the summer andvolunteered at Feeding AmericaTampa Bay, where she sorted foodand distributed it to the needy.
She won’t win any medals by vol-unteering, but Carroll said the resultis rewarding just the same.
“It’s such a great feeling, beingable to help other people,” she said.
Helping young athletes learn newskills was particularly rewarding,Carroll said. Perhaps that’s becauseshe used to be one of those youngathletes herself. She’s been doinggymnastics since she was around 5years old, and her dedication to twosports has required much of her lim-ited free time. At Tampa CatholicHigh School, Carroll spent severalhours a day after school on gymnas-tics, whether it was beam, bars, flooror vault work. Weekends meant atrip to Merritt Island to practice polevaulting at Pole Vault City.
And that doesn’t count the out-of-state traveling. As an AAUparticipant, Carroll travels to places
like Iowa and New York to competein gymnastics and pole vaultingevents. She’s been to the Big Appleseveral times just this year, she said.
She has enjoyed competingagainst athletes from different states.
She also has had the chance tomeet coaches, too, who have provid-ed valuable advice and critiques onher form. She’s even planning to at-tend a camp run by a coach she metat a competition.
Now that she’s graduated highschool, Carroll’s schedule will change.
But it won’t get easier. She’ll miss gymnastics, but pole
vaulting will become a priority, sinceit earned her a full scholarship to theUniversity of South Florida.
Her academic studies will focuson integrative biology in pursuit of acareer in either trauma medicine orforensics.
And the $10,000 in scholarshipmoney won’t hurt, either.
While the monetary prize andthe state champion accolades arenice, Carroll is most proud of notjust being named a Sullivan winner, but in taking the top female spot outof all eligible high school athletes.
“This is on a whole other levelthan everything else that I’ve done,”Carroll said.

Summertime can be an especially riskytime for poisoning accidents with pets.
The American Society for the Preventionof Cruelty to Animals’ Poison Control Centeroffers these tips to help keep your pets safe:
• Don’t leave alcoholic beverages withinreach of your pets. Alcoholic beverages havethe potential to poison pets. If ingested, theanimal could become very intoxicated andweak, severely depressed or could go into acoma. In severe cases, your pet could diefrom respiratory failure.
• Don’t apply sunscreen or insect repel-lent on your pet that is not labeledspecifically for use on animals. Ingestion ofsunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst andlethargy. The misuse of insect repellent thatcontains DEET can lead to neurologicalproblems.
• Always keep matches and lighter fluidaway from your pets. Certain types ofmatches contain chlorates, which coulddamage blood cells and result in difficultybreathing—or, in severe cases, kidney dis-ease. Lighter fluid can irritate skin, and, ifingested, can produce gastrointestinal irrita-tion and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumo-nia and breathing problems could develop.
• Don’t put glow jewelry on your pets,or allow them to play with it. While the lu-minescent substance contained in theseproducts is not highly toxic, excessive drool-ing and gastrointestinal irritation could stillresult from ingestions, and intestinal block-
age could occur from swallowing largepieces of the plastic containers.
• Keep citronella candles, insect coilsand oil products away from your pets.Ingestions can produce stomach irritationand possibly even central nervous systemdepression. If inhaled, the oils could causeaspiration pneumonia in pets.
• Be sure to keep your pets on their nor-mal diet. Any change, even for one meal, cangive your pets severe indigestion and diar-rhea. This is especially true for older animalsthat have more delicate digestive systemsand nutritional requirements.
It’s also important to keep in mind thatfoods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avo-cado, grapes, raisins, salt and yeast dough allcan be potentially toxic to companion ani-mals.
The American Kennel Club also offersthese tips to keep your pets safe duringsummer.
• Avoid scraps from the grill. Whiletempting to our pets, any sudden change toyour pets' diet can cause stomach upset.
• Avoid feeding your pets fatty and richfoods such as hamburgers, hotdogs, chickenand baby back ribs. They can lead to indiges-tion, upset stomach, diarrhea and ultimatelypancreatitis.
• Don’t give your pet raw meat or fish, because they contain bacteria or parasitesthat are extremely dangerous to our petsand can be fatal.
• Don’t give your pets discarded bonesfrom ribs, steak or chicken because they cancause an obstruction or lacerations of yourpet’s digestive system.
