Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris By Peter de Kuster Introduction: What’s Your Paris Story? * You are the storyteller of your own life and work, and you can create your dreamlife and dreamjob. Or not! * If there is nothing very exciting about the story you tell yourself about your work, no matter how hard you apply yourself you won’t be happy and you won’t get noticed, and that increasingly means you won’t get paid much either
* I don’t think there’s anything worse than telling yourself the story dat you’re just an ordinary person. * Rewrite the story about who’s your boss. Buy a mirror: It’s You!
We keep trying to tell ourselves the old myths about a professional career – a story about employment in which Big Companies Ruled and we Fitted in. Human tragedies in essence. Cubicle slaves like Julie who long for a more fullfilling life and work. Julie longs for an dreamjob experience as her rolemodel Julia Child found in Paris.
Dazzled by the still abiding myth of security, we shy away from recognizing that new modes of enterprise require nothing less than the Re-Imagining of our Story about life and work. Now we must take … Immediate Charge … of our new jobs and identities that will consist of a string of Dreamjobs that we perform at a series of companies or projects for clients, small and large, over time.
That’s a scary story. That’s a cool story. Whichever, it’s your life story in a Hero’s Journey World. Your Midnight in Paris In the Woody Allen movie Midnight in Paris discovers the hero his calling in his Midnight encounters with his heroes of the past of Paris like Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Picasso, Salvador Dali. I imagine a truly creative society. – day and night Each person moves from dreamjob to dreamjob. Learning never ceases. We have periodically our own Midnight in Paris. Meeting role – models and mentors is road to inspiration and greater self – reliance. Each career consists of numerous “mini – dreamjobs’ with time-‐outs along the way. And Testdrives in New Dreamjobs. Midnights in Paris. The cubicle slave is dead; long live the Hero’s Journey.
The Hero’s Journey Work is changing. Irreversibly. (Welcome, again, to the Hero’s Journey World). And now… the worker (me, you) must change along with the work.
Every several generations, we undergo a massive upheaval in our work lives. We move off the farm to the city of Paris. Then we move inside the city from factories into the white – collar nouveau Bastilles called – Bigh City Offices. Today the software robots are taking over the (surprisingly mindless) white collar jobs of yesteryear. Once again we must re-‐imagine our work and must find New Dreamjobs … New Ways to Add Value. Yet this time around, the change isn’t just a matter of moving by the millions like sheep from Job Prison A in the factory to Job Prison B in the office. We must become … Heroes and Heroines… at least in spirit, if not immediately in reality who find, create or re-‐create their own dreamjobs. We must convert ourselves into Genuine Entrepreneurs .. not mere white
collar ciphers. New Story about You/Me: The Hero’s Journey: Innovative, Risk-‐Taking, Self-‐Sufficient Entepreneurs – not smooth functioning organization men (or women).
Sounds scary as hell, right? You bet. But here’s my story. I believe that this is our time. Our opportunity to find and create our own dreamjobs. To take a pick-‐axe and tear down those wretched cubicle Bastille walls, to smash these ergonomically correct but boring “cubicle” furtniture and to create our dreamjob in the wide – open world beyond is nothing short of… Liberation (as Delacroix felt it) What a challenge! What an opportunity! What a great story unfolding! A great story about immense, meaningful value creation and dreams come true. An opportunity for individual reinvention of your dreamjob!
