Testdrive  Your  Dreamjob    in  Paris  (Conclusion)  By  Peter  de  Kuster    Pursuing  Happiness  in  Your  Dreamjob    10  Lessons  of  the  Heroes  in  Julie@Julia  and  Midnight  in  Paris

!.      Heroes  Create  Opportunities.      Heroes  do  NOT  …transform  themselves  and  others.  Heroes  construct  a  context  in  which  Voyages  of  Mutual  Discovery  can  take  place.  Heroes  provide  access  to  a  luxuriant  portfolio  of  WOW  Projects  that  challenge  themselves  and  their  clients  to  express  their  Innate  Curiosity  and  to  visit  (or,  indeed  create)  places  that  they  and  their  clients  had  never  dreamed  of.

Page 2: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

Places  Never  Dreamed  Of.  That  is  the  heart  of  the  matter.  We  must  –  in  our  dreamjob  in  these  times  ..  discover  –  invent  places  that  have  not  herefore  existed.  And  as  a  hero  or  heroine  …  if  you  don’t  have  the  NERVE  to  encourage  yourself  and  others  than  you  shouldn’t  pursue  a  dreamjob.  Anywhere.      2.      Heroes  Are  Talent  Developers      Heroes  who  succeed  in  their  dreamjob  over  the  long  haul  are  great  talent  developers.  The  OBSESSION  for  those  who  would  Truly  Create  a  Legacy  of  Greatness.  Picasso  didn’t  have  a  vision  in  my  book.  Picasso  was..  the  Premier  Talent  Developer  of  our  times.

Page 3: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

Some  people  (heroes)  get  their  Ultimate  Happiness  out  of  Developing  Extraordinary  Talent.  In  themselves,  in  others,  in  their  clients.  (Their  Midnights  in  Paris  are  their  Ultimate  Bragging  Rights!).  Alas,  some  (most  of  us?)  don’t.      3.      Heroes  Thrive  on  Paradox    Forget  what  they  taught  you  at  business  schools.  Management  courses.  Marketing  masterclasses.  Your  Dreamjob  ain’t  science!  It  is  …  100  PERCENT  OF  THE  TIME…  ART.      YOUR  DREAMJOB  IS  AN  ….  ART.  An  art  of  paradox.      The  Ultimate  Paradox  in  YOUR  ENTREPRENEURIAL  STORY.  In  order  to  be  ‘excellent’  and  ‘happy’  in  your  dreamjob  you  must  be….  CONSISTENT  in  the  story  you  tell  yourself  and  others.  Excellence  is  Consistency  of  Superior  Performance.  But  the  very  moment  that  you  become  excellenty  ‘consistent’  you  become  TOTALLY  VULNERABLE…  to  the  attack  of  predictability  and  boredom.

Page 4: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

We    must  be  consistently  vigilant.  Vigilant  about  …  OPPOSITES.  For  example.  Are  you  ‘organized’  enough?  If  yes  WORRY.  Are  you  disorganized  enough?  If  so…  WORRY.      Worry  constantly  …  about  the  balance…  the  wobble…  the  swing  of  the  pendulum.  Well  this  idea  is  actually  about  ..  balance.  It’s  about  going  the  way  of  passion,  total  surrender  ….for  a  while…  &  TOO  FAR  and  than  going  back  for  a  while  to  control  and  clear  goals…  &  TOO  FAR.        The  rhinoceros  story  of  Salvador  Dali:  Relatively  extreme,  wild  oscillation  between  too  much  control  and  surrealistic  no  control  at  all..is  probably  the  secret  to  long  term  effectiveness,  happiness,  excellence  in  your  dreamjob.      4.      Heroes  DO!    If  you  don’t  know  what  the  hell  is  going  on…  if  you  don’t  know  the  shape  or  even  the  location  of  the  playing  field…  if  you  don’t  know  the  nature  of  the  rules  of  the  game  of  even  if  there  are…  then,  in  the  immortal  words  of  Ernst  Hemingway  “Don’t  just  stand  there.  Do  something”.      It  is  a  good  phrase.  But  it’s  far  more  profound  than  that.  If  you  don’t  know  what’s  going  on…  Stop  Thinking.  It  won’t  do  you  much  good.  Try  Something…  See  what  happens.  That  is,  until  you  let  fly  the  new  book  …or

Page 5: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

new  fashion  product…  or  whatever…you  have  Utterly  No  Idea  What  the  Hell  is  Going  On.

Heroes  Re-‐Do.  If  something  goes  awry,  the  typical  Big  Company  …  shoots  the  messenger.  Appoints  a  committee.  Aims  to  make  sure  that  …  this  aberration  Never  Occurs  Again.  In  the  process,  the  possibility  of  Rapid  Progress  is  diminished.  In  short”  Do  it  right  the  first  time”  is  stupid.  A  Snare.  A  Delusion.  (An  Abomination).      5.      Heroes  Express  their  Passion    Your  Dreamjob  is  a  great  story  about  love  affair  with  an  idea  you  passionately  pursue  in  your  work  .      Your  Dreamjob  is  not  something  created  by  a  ….  Committee.  Your  Dreamjob  is  not  something  generated  by  ….  Personality,  Talent  and  Career  Analysis  Your  Dreamjob  is  not  the  byproduct  of  a  consultants…report  about  you.  Your  Dreamjob  is  about  …  wild,  passionate,  Intemperate    LOVE.

Page 6: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

Your  Dreamjob  is  all  about  an  intimate  love.  The  Hero’s  Journey  by  Peter  de  Kuster:  Paasion.  Appetite  for  Life.  Engagement.  Commitment.  Great  causes  and  the  determination  to  Make  a  Difference.  Bizarre  Failures.  Growth.  Insatiable  appetite  for  change.  For  Traveling/Journeying.

Page 7: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

6.      Heroes  are  Great  Storytellers      A  scintillating  story  makes  an  abstract  dreamjob  real.  Brings  it  to  life.  Earnst  Hemingway  had  a  handful  of  powerful  stories  which  were  truly  clear  and  dear  to  him.  And  he  held  onto  them…despite  the  insane  pressures  in  his  life.  Hemingway  was  a  Great  Storyteller.  You  can  love  him  or  hate  him.  But  you  can’t  deny  his  splendid  storytelling  ability  and  the  degree  to  which  he  changed  the  overall  story  of  Paris  –  for  the  better.  It  is  simple.  Profound.  (And  mostly  not  understandable  to  career  engineers,  management  scientists  and  their  ilk).  I’m  only  half  kidding.    So:  What  ’s  your  (compelling)  story  about  your  dreamjob?

   7.      Heroes  are  their  Story!    Your  story  is  a  ‘character  issue’.  Hence  your  story  is  …personal.  A  Pure  Your  Dreamjob  Issue.  You  are  your  story,  your  brand,  your  company,  your  dreamjob.  The  way  you  spend  your  time  of  the  day  tells  exactly  the  story  to  yourself  and  other  where  you  care  about.  Heroes  love  their  work.  That  passion  tells  their  story  and  is  infectious.  Heroes  have  a  kid  alive  in  them  who  loves  to  know  the  next  adventure.    *  You  =  Your  Dreamjob  *  You  =  Your  Story  *  Your  Story  =  Your  Hero’s  Journey    *  Your  Story  =  What  you  Do  (Drinking  as  Zelda  Fitzgerald  Does)

Page 8: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

   8.      Heroes  Break  Rules!    We  are  Re-‐imagining  the  World!  We  are  adding  value  in  totally  new  fashions  which  re  quire  …Bringing  to  Bear  Your  Entire  Talent  `Set  to  the    Dreamjob…their  Personal  Quests.  No  one  ever  made  it  to  the  Midnight  in  Paris  Heroes  of  Fame  on  a  record  of  copycatting  or  line  extensions.

Think  Hemingway,  Picasso,  Gertrude  Stein,  Scott  and  Zelda  Fitzgerald,  Rodin,  Salvador  Dali.  Does  ‘line  extension’  come  to  mind?  Hardly.    Their  dreamjobs  started  out  as  little  niche  ideas,  that  take  of  ….  and  only  years  later….  Changed  the  world.

Page 9: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

9.      Heroes  hang  out  with  Heroes      Creating  your  dreamjob  is  easy.  Want  to  get  more  of  a  dreamjob?  Hang  out  with  people  who  are  in  dreamjobs.  I  call  this  putting  yourself  in  the  Testdrive  Your  Dreamjob  Permanently  Journey.        BECOME  A  COLLECTOR  of  ROLEMODELS  and  MENTORS  in  DREAMJOBS    Creating  your  dreamjob  is  easy.  Spend  time  with  people  you’re  genuinely,  truely  passionate  interested  in.  Surround  you  with  people  who  make  you  feel  life  is  an  adventure.  That’s  my  secret  and  I  think  it  ‘ll  work  for  any  hero.      The  Midnight  in  Paris  Story:  WE  BECOME  WHO  WE  HANG  OUT  WITH!

   10.      Heroes  Create    Stuff  that  Matters    Sometimes  I  think  that  a    lot  of    entrepreneurship/self  management/career  coaching  literature  ~STINKS.  Too  much  of  the  focus  is  on  tactics  and  motivation  (and  frankly  manipulation).  All  of  this  misses  the  point  of  the    story  about  your  dreamjob:  WHY?    Dreamjob  to  touch  WHO  in  their  lives?  From  Hemingway,  Picasso,  Julia  Child,  Gertrude  Stein  to  all  the  heroes  of  Paris  in  past  and  present  …  they  had  their  dreamjob  and  they  were  heroes

Page 10: Testdrive Your Dreamjob in Paris Conclusion

Because  they  Want  Some  Particular  Thing  Created    THEY  WANT  TO  CREATE  STUFF  THAT  MATTERS.

Heroes  in  Paris  of  past  and  present  are  not  only  great  in  their  dreamjob.    They  are  great  in  inspiring  others  to  take  novel  journeys  too  –  Testdrives  in  their  Dreamjobs  like  Julie  and  the  character  Owen  Wilson  plays.    Paris  is  a  place  where  importance  is  handed  down  from  mentor  to  hero.  And  hero  to  mentor.
