What is the New Literacies Collaborative (NLC)?

A multidisciplinary team of researchers and educators who promote research, professional development, and global connections around new literacies. (visit newlit.org)

New literacies emerge from the theoretical and practical intersection of literacy, technology, and media.

NLC Research:Having Our Say - Students

• Results from a study conducted with 4,000 NC middle grade students

– Growing trends among students demonstrate an increased passion for and reliance on technologies for entertainment & communication.

– In many cases, out of school technology use had “lapped” in school technology use, even in rural and underserved schools.

– Students demonstrated a sophisticated knowledge about what they want do in school and what activities interested them.

• (Spires, Lee, Turner & Johnson, 2008)

What you said you wanted from the workshop:

• To have time to explore and play with the tools.

• To learn about new tools that are appropriate for the ELA class.

• To take back specific ELA lessons that can be taught in your classroom now.
