ROOTROOT

MINMIN• Meaning: less, smaller• Examples: minimum, minority, miniature

• Sentences: → Have you ever heard of minimum wage system? → Only a minority of our class voted for his plan.

MIT, MISSMIT, MISS• Meaning: to send• Examples: commitment, transmit, admission

• Sentences: → He made an important commitment to her last night. → She just got the admission to Harvard.

MORTMORT• Meaning: death• Examples: mortal, immortal, mortuary

• Sentences: → Human being are mortal. → Every hospital has mortuary.

NAUTNAUT• Meaning: ship• Examples: astronaut, nautical, nautical mile

• Sentences: → Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to walk on the moon. → He knows a lot of nautical terms because his father is a captain.

NEONEO• Meaning: new• Examples: neoclassic, neo-darwinism, neo-conservatism

• Sentences: → Bas relief is a representative of neoclassic. → Neo-conservatism prevailed in the Reagan era.

NEURONEURO• Meaning: nerve• Examples: neurosis, neurocyte, neurosurgeon

• Sentences: → Hypochondria is a kind of neurosis. → There are roughly a thousand hundred million of neurocytes in human brain.

NOMIN, NOMENNOMIN, NOMEN• Meaning: name• Examples: nominate, nominal, denominate

• Sentences: → We nominated him our class leader. → That old man is the nominal head of the

business.

Micro-• Meaning: small, millionth

• Example : –microscope,

microfilm, microwave, micrometer

• Abnormalities in the cells can be seen quite clearly under a microscope.

Mis-• Meaning:

• Example :misconduct, misinform, misinterpret, mistrust mispronounce, mistake

• Some parts of the report could be misinterpreted.

Mono-• Meaning: – alone; single; one

• Example : – monopoly, monotype,

Non-• Meaning: – Not– Nine

• Example : – Nonfiction, nonsense,

nondescript(ordinary)– nonagon

• There is many nondescript suburban house in Texas.

• Having the army still in power makes a nonsense of last year's elections.

Peri-• Meaning: – About; around; near;

surrounding; enclosing;

• Example : – perimeter, perigee,

periodontal

• Do you know how to calculate the perimeter of the rectangle?

• A lot of people have periodontal diseases.

Poly-• Meaning: – Many; much

• Example : – polyculture,

polytheist, polygon, polygamy

• There are some polygamous societies in some parts of the world.

• The belief that there is more than one god is called polytheist.

logy-, ology• Meaning: – the names of sciences or

bodies of knowledge– word, study, say, speech,

reason, study

• Example : – Zoology, musicology, trilogy,

phraseology

• trilogy is a series of three plays, books etc that are about the same people or subject.

-ment• Meaning: – Condition, result, quality– the result or product of an

action– Process

• Example : – Document, enjoyment,

management, fragment, embankment, refreshment

• a wide wall of earth or stones built to stop water from flooding an area is called embankment.

• Many car accidents on freeway cause a lot of glass fragments.
