St Scholastica’s BoardingCollege at Glebe is a richand diverse community in

which the students, their parentsand the staff who care for themall play a unique and vital role inliving out the Benedictine valuesof the college.

Five of the college’s 2013 Year12 students, instead of takingoff for the Gold Coast as manyHSC students do for theirSchoolies break, elected to joinGood Samaritan Sister MegKahler and students from otherGood Samaritan schools totravel to the Philippines to workin the Good Samaritan KinderSchool in Bacolod.

The group encountered first-hand the damage that CycloneYolanda had brought to the coun-try.

The students visited two sisterschools in Manila which wereassisting the victims of thetyphoon and heard and saw thetales of the total destruction ofthe school in Tacloban city.

Many of the donations col-

lected before their departurewent to some of these most vul-nerable communities.

The group was in thePhilippines for two weeks atthe end of the school year andgot involved in tutoring groups ina slum area in Manila, partici-pated in an activity day in amountain village, as well as tak-ing in the sights and sounds ofManila.

Most of the time was spent inBacolod and the group tookChristmas presents for the chil-dren at the kindergarten, hosteda Christmas party and helpedout in the classrooms.

Visual arts student andboarder from Bombala, LilyPlatts, designed several muralsand then with the help of theother students painted them forthe school.

It was for each and every girl atransformative experience andwill stay with them as a timewhen the gift of compassion waspractised in a very practical andinspirational way.

What you recognise in such asituation is how much fulfilmentand satisfaction you get backout of generosity and helpingothers.

We are very proud of these fiveyoung women from StScholastica’s.

Limited boarding vacanciesare available for 2015.

To learn more about thecollege and its community, whynot take the opportunity to visitus on Open Day, Sunday March16.

Both day and boarding col-leges are open between 11amand 3pm on the day and the prin-cipal will speak with families at1pm.

The college’s garden settingmay come as a very pleasantsurprise to those who haven’tdiscovered St Scholastica’s butare already familiar with Glebe’scentral location on the doorstepof the Sydney CBD.
