WESTERN MAGAZINE, Week commencing Monday, March 3, 2014 9 S t Scholastica’s Boarding College at Glebe is a rich and diverse community in which the students, their parents and the staff who care for them all play a unique and vital role in living out the Benedictine values of the college. Five of the college’s 2013 Year 12 students, instead of taking off for the Gold Coast as many HSC students do for their Schoolies break, elected to join Good Samaritan Sister Meg Kahler and students from other Good Samaritan schools to travel to the Philippines to work in the Good Samaritan Kinder School in Bacolod. The group encountered first- hand the damage that Cyclone Yolanda had brought to the coun- try. The students visited two sister schools in Manila which were assisting the victims of the typhoon and heard and saw the tales of the total destruction of the school in Tacloban city. Many of the donations col- lected before their departure went to some of these most vul- nerable communities. The group was in the Philippines for two weeks at the end of the school year and got involved in tutoring groups in a slum area in Manila, partici- pated in an activity day in a mountain village, as well as tak- ing in the sights and sounds of Manila. Most of the time was spent in Bacolod and the group took Christmas presents for the chil- dren at the kindergarten, hosted a Christmas party and helped out in the classrooms. Visual arts student and boarder from Bombala, Lily Platts, designed several murals and then with the help of the other students painted them for the school. It was for each and every girl a transformative experience and will stay with them as a time when the gift of compassion was practised in a very practical and inspirational way. What you recognise in such a situation is how much fulfilment and satisfaction you get back out of generosity and helping others. We are very proud of these five young women from St Scholastica’s.
