Definition :

A hot spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth's crust.

There are geothermal hot springs in many locations all over the crust of the earth.

While some of these springs contain water that is a safe temperature for bathing, others are so hot that immersion can result in injury or death.

HOT SPRINGS IN INDIA (MAJOR)

1.Vajreshwari Temple 2.Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary 3.Manikaran,Himachal pradesh 4.Taptapani, Nayagarh District of

Orissa 5.Bakreshwar,west bengal

1.Vajreshwari Temple Located in the town Vajreshwari, 75 km

away from Mumbai. There are around twenty-one hot water

springs in a five-kilometer radius of the temple.

According to tradition, the hot water is the blood of demons and giants who were slain by the goddess Vajreshwari.

According to scientists, their proximity to the former volcano in the region accounts for their creation.

2.Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary The Garampani wildlife sanctuary is

located in the northern part of the Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

The sanctuary gets its name ‘Garampani’ from the hot springs that the sanctuary is famous for.

Garampani means hot water.

3.Manikaran,Himachal pradesh Manikaran is located in the Parvati

Valley on river Parvati, northeast of Bhuntar in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh.

It is at an altitude of 1760 m and is located about 35 km from Kullu.

This small town attracts tourists visiting Manali and Kullu to its hot springs and pilgrim centres.

An experimental geothermal energy plant has also been set up here.

4.Taptapani, Nayagarh District of Orissa :

Taptapani is famous for its hot sulfur water spring.

The name “Taptapani” also suggests that. “Tapta” means hot and “pani” means water.

Natural spring of Taptapani are attributed with medicinal properties and can be bathed in at the pond created next to the hot spring.

The hot spring is situated at the eastern slope of the eastern ghat at a crest of the hill with in the lush green forest having wide range of flora and fauna.

5. Bakreshwar:

Bakreshwar is a town in the Suri Sadar subdivision of Birbhum district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Bakreshwar is also a place of geological interest with many hot springs.

There are ten hot springs here.
