“We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.” July 27, 2008 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton
Back Up From Down Under We arrived home last Tuesday night after about 29 hours of flying and running through airports. We left at 3 am Tuesday in Australia and arrived home around 7 pm Tuesday here in Royal Oak. It was a long Tuesday. A good number of us got off the plane coming down with colds as a result of the Australian winter and a long dose of re-circulated air on the plane. It was a small price to pay for a great experience. The all night vigil with Eucharistic adoration in the park with almost a million people was an awesome experience. This huge group of mostly young people adoring Jesus present in the Eucharist in reverent silence in the middle of the night was truly inspiring. The Holy Father’s presence was, as it should be, second to the presence of Jesus. Pope and pilgrims together in prayer before the Lord our God united as one Church. It was one of those experiences where you had to be there to begin to feel the full impact of it all. Mass on Sunday was the culminating high point of the pilgrimage, a fitting culmination of a great experience. There were more than a half million pilgrims in the park alone with overflow crowds in adjacent parks. The number of concelebrants was limited to 4,000 and I was truly humbled to be one of them. The music, the cultural influences, the magnitude, the tremendous diversity, and yet the unity of faith all woven together into a glimpse of the heavenly liturgy on the triumphant Lamb of God in the kingdom.

Save the Date! Save a Life! Blood Drive at Shrine Tuesday, August 12, 1 to 7 pm National Shrine Conference Center We need everyone able to give a pint, to come and donate. The goal is to combine the Shrine Catholic Schools donors with those who come to the Conference Center. Our goal is 62 pints. We do this in cooperation with the American Red Cross. Blood Reserves are desperately low. Bring a friend! This is another way to participate in saving a life!
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is...an important daily practice and becomes an inexhaustible source of holiness...It is pleasant to spend time with Christ, to lie close to his breast like the Beloved Disciple and to feel the infinite love present in his heart."
-Pope John Paul II The following is one of Pope John Paul II's prayers for young people. As you know, Pope John Paul II began World Youth Day. The XXIII World Youth Day celebrated with Pope Benedict XVI just concluded in Sydney, Australia. What a glorious celebration of our faith and the universal Church! I would like to invite all young people to Holy Hours of Adoration of our Lord, Jesus. Call Marie Lama at 248.655.0309 if interested.
Act of Entrustment of Young People to Mary It was Jesus, O Virgin Mary, who from the cross wished to entrust us to you, not to attentuate, but to confirm his exclusive role of Savior of the world.
If, in the disciple John, all the children of the Church were entrusted to you, it pleases me that much more to see entrusted to you,
O Mary, the young people of the world. To you, gentle Mother, whose protection I have always felt, I entrust them again this
evening. Under your mantle, in your protection, they seek refuge. You, Mother of divine grace, make them radiant with the beauty of Christ! They are the young people of this century, who, at the dawn of the new millenium, still live
the torments deriving from sin, from hatred, from violence, from terrorism, and from war.
But they are also the young people from who the Church looks to with trust in the awareness that with the help of the grace of God they will succeed in believing and
living as witnesses of the Gospel in the today of history. O Mary, help them to respond to their vocation.
Lead them to the knowledge of true love bless their affections. Sustain them in the moment of suffering. Render them intrepid messengers of the greeting of Christ on
the day of Easter: 'Peace be with you. With them, I also entrust myself once again to you and with confident affection I repeat to you: Totus tuus ego sum! I am all yours! And also each one them with
cries out to you: Totus tuus! Totus tuus! Amen.

Reflecting with the participants on the pilgrimage, one strong and recurrent theme was that the experience strongly confirmed their faith in Jesus and opened their eyes to the universality of the Catholic Church throughout the world. What more could one ask for? Now it is for the pilgrims to return to their homes throughout the world to bring the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit to others. CSA To date, 1,063 people have responded. 965 were gifts. $173,640 has been pledged, which is 83 percent of our goal. Reminder letters have gone out. Please respond, even if you cannot make a gift. Your response helps us to keep our parish records up to date. Master Plan The work on the field house at the High School and Academy is moving along on target. We are able to do this with the bond issue. It means that we will have our desperately needed athletic facility, performing arts center, and new science classrooms within the next year and a half. We will also need to immediately begin to pay off the bond issue over time. Following the motto of Saint Thérèse, we can do it “with all our strength.” Rosie and Carlito Rose seemed genuinely happy to see me come home. She stuck to me like glue for the first 24 hours to make sure I wouldn’t leave again. Now all seems to be back to normal. The big surprise was that even Carlito came down off his high perch to say hello and do a little dance. What a welcome.

Pope Proclaims Year Devoted to St. Paul June 29, 2008 to June 29, 2009 A Jubilee Year dedicated to St. Paul will be held from June 29, 2008 to June 29, 2009 to mark the 2000th anniversary of the apostle's birth. Pope Benedict XVI announced the Pauline Year at a vesper service on June 28 in the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls in Rome. The year will include a myriad of events in the areas of ecumenism, liturgy, prayer, art, history, archaeology, pastoral initiatives, and pilgrimages. “Dear brothers and sisters, as in early times, today too Christ needs apostles ready to sacrifice themselves. He needs witnesses and martyrs like St Paul. Paul, a former violent persecutor of Christians, when he fell to the ground dazzled by the divine light on the road to Damascus, did not hesitate to change sides to the Crucified One and followed him without second thoughts. He lived and worked for Christ, for him he suffered and died. How timely his example is today! “And for this very reason I am pleased to announce officially that we shall be dedicating a special Jubilee Year to the Apostle Paul from 28 June 2008 to 29 June 2009, on the occasion of the bi-millennium of his birth, which historians have placed between the years 7 and 10 A.D.”
~ Pope Benedict XVI, June 28, 2007 First Vespers of the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul

Lending Library Australia has been in the news a lot lately, due to the publicity for World Youth Day. Did you know that Australia does not have any canonized saints? There is one in the
process, Mary Mackillop. She needs a miracle before the process can go forward. She was determined to bring education to the poor and underprivileged, and ran into many obstacles along the way, including excommunication and exile, which was later lifted. You can learn more about her by watching the DVD, "Mary A true story for the entire family." Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am—2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15—Noon, in the Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). For information call Kathy McGuire at 248.541.6834 or JoAn Gilleran at 248.629.4045.

Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the archdiocesan Department of Education to offer regularly scheduled classes in the four major Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods—a way of life by which a couple recognizes natural, biological signs of fertility and infertility. In addition, the department offers a two-hour conjugal love and introductory NFP presentation for engaged couples, which provides insight into Church teaching about the spirituality of sexual intimacy in the sacrament of marriage. Sign-up: Host the Cup of Blessing In Your Home To encourage family/household prayer we are introducing The Cup of Blessing Program at the National Shrine of the Little Flower. It will be easy to participate in the program. Each week a registered family/household will accept the responsibility to pray for Vocations, by accepting the Cup of Blessing and placing it in a prominent place of honor in their home, preferably as a Centerpiece on the kitchen table, where it can be seen all week, particularly at meal times. Each household/family will be provided with suitable Prayers for Vocations, which they can pray
before meals. Members of the household may also wish to spend some time talking about vocations, about the need for spiritual leaders in the Church, about ways they can affirm our priests and religious in their vocations, and other related topics. A Journal in which household members can record any thoughts and/or prayers they wish to pass on will accompany the Cup of Blessing. The Cup of Blessing will circulate “each week” to a new HOST FAMILY/HOUSEHOLD within the context of the Sunday, 9 am mass, with the hope that the practice of family/household prayer will spread throughout the parish. This program is a true response to Christ's call,
"Pray to the Lord of the Harvest that there be laborers for the vineyard." Sign-up and Enrollment The Cup of Blessing Program is open to all registered households. To enroll in the program, you must complete the form below and bring it to the Rectory Office, or drop it in the Collection Basket. You will be contacted to schedule your week of participation in the Cup of Blessing Program.

Life Matters I was recently blessed to be able to visit Poland. While learning a bit of the country’s history and its people, it was apparent how their Catholic faith gave them hope in the midst of the struggles of communism. This was also true for the people that endured the concentration camps. While visiting Auschwitz, we saw the horrific acts that one group of people can inflict on another. At the end of the tour, the guide explained that the Jewish people were not even treated like animals; they were treated like “bugs”. Hitler had convinced the Germans that the Jews were sub-human; therefore it was permissible to kill them; to do research on them. How else could good people kill other people; make them not human? The guide clearly stated that people knew what was happening and what we need to learn from these events is to never again remain silent in the midst of such evil. While reflecting on the experience, it was clear that today we are experiencing the same “brainwashing”. We live in a culture that is trying to convince us that the pre-born are not human and therefore can be killed and used for experimentation. As Archbishop Chaput once wrote: “The 'choice' in abortion always involves the choice to end the life of an unborn human being. For anyone who sees this fact clearly, neutrality, silence or private disapproval are not options. They are evils almost as grave as abortion itself." We are in the midst of a cultural war where lives are at stake; what will you do to break the silence?

I could never do that!” and the following thoughts are spinning in your head: Maybe I won’t be able to answer a question asked by a student…I didn’t go to Catholic school…I don’t have a theology degree…Let someone else volunteer…I’m not a teacher…I don’t even have kids…I don’t know the first thing about being a catechist…Remember the leap of faith that the apostles took when Jesus called them - He doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called! We have openings in the preschool, elementary and middle school levels. If you are ready to say, “Here I am”, call the Office of Religious Formation at 248.541.5133 or email Janie Lynch at jlynch@shrinechurch.com. Registration must be complete prior to Sept. 12 to ensure materials are delivered on time. If tuition assistance is required, contact Margaret McCann at ENDOW by calling 303.715.3224. FLOWER: Families Live Out the Word in Everyday Routines Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old. Perhaps a common goal for many of us is to pass on to family all that is good. A core question and concern might be, “how do we pass on our faith?” Faith is perhaps our most cherished gift. Our storeroom is filled with stories: from Scripture, stories from life, stories of ancestors, stories shared in churches on Sunday morning and holydays, stories shared in homes on holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries. How do we enter our storeroom of faith and bring out both the old and the new? Our storerooms are also full of relationships: with God and the saints, with relatives and friends. It is in the relationships that we bridge the old and the new. Relationships fill our storeroom: relationships that are shared within families, homes, neighborhoods and parish communities of faith. How do you build and maintain relationships?
Shrine Career Network Presents: Learn how to network & to create your personal brand from one of Detroit’s most connected July 28, 6:45 to 9 pm National Shrine Conference Center Presented by: Terry Bean, the founder of Networked Inc and Motor City Connect, Terry Bean exemplifies the spirit of six degrees of connectedness What you’ll learn – Mr. Bean will help people define their network and how to effectively use it in their job search. As a consummate networker, he makes sure he understands not only the needs of his associates, but how to bring together the resources to satisfy those needs. Since that time, Terry has started numerous face to face and virtual networking groups. He is currently the 9th most connected Linkedin member in Detroit, is an associate at CNO Partners and serves as the social networking editor for The National Networker. Maintaining these relationships have helped him achieve the success he presently enjoys. Would you like to offer your expertise to this group? Is your company looking for new employees? Attend our meeting or forward requests to Janine Krasicky, J9Media Solutions, at Janine@j9media.com or call 248.542.3991. Directions: National Shrine of the Little Flower is located at 12 Mile & Woodward. The National Shrine Conference Center is located North of the Church next to Yaya’s Chicken at 29130 Woodward Avenue . The Many Faces of Abuse: Domestic Violence Secrecy can be a way to keep things in the dark that should not be hidden, because they are wrong. Abuse, whether in the family, the school, or in the workplace, needs to be exposed to the light of day so that the abuse will end and people can begin to heal and get on with living the life God intended for them. Help is available by calling the National Do-mestic Violence Hotline, 800.799.7233. All calls are confidential. For information, contact the Office for Catholic Social Action at 313.237.5905. This ministry is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Many parishioners do not know that the cost of printing our bulletin each week is carried by our advertisers. By taking advertising space, these people make possible one means of communication with the people of our Parish. We owe them a real debt of gratitude. We encourage you to patronize our advertisers. Tell them where you saw their ad and thank them for supporting our Parish. Obviously these people advertise their business to get business. We need to show them that advertising in our bulletin is a good investment and will bring a return. Encourage them to continue to help us provide a quality Parish bulletin for you.
