Being an AdventPeople

By Pastor Shane Phelan

You will often hear it said thatChristians are “Easter people.”We believe in new life comingout of death. This is the heart ofJesus’ life and teaching. ButJesus’ life carries other meanings.Jesus points to the kingdom ofGod and calls us to turn to thisother realm. This is the messageof Advent.

Advent is the time when we hearthe call to prepare the way of theLord. Jesus comes as an infant, but in him we see all the power and gloryof God. We cannot see this power and glory unless we clean the lenses ofour hearts. We have to practice waiting and watching and listening. Wehave to look for the signs of the kingdom around us. We have to look forwhere we can be part of the coming kingdom, where we can prepare the wayfor the coming of Jesus.

Of course, this is not what our culture tells us to do in December. Ourculture tells us to get out, get shopping, get to parties – get busy! As a result,we approach Christmas exhausted rather than expectant. Rather thanbeginning the Christmas season on Christmas, we end it – often grateful thatit’s over.

But we are an Advent people as much as an Easter people. We are a peoplecalled to look for signs of new life in the midst of winter. We are called tokeep our eyes peeled for the coming of the Messiah. This cannot be rushed, and it can’t be bought. It calls for patience and hope.

Now, I don’t expect you to suddenly push aside all those messages andinvitations. But I do know that the gift we have coming at Christmas is

S t . L u k e ’ s E p i s c o p a l & O u r S a v i o u r L u t h e r a n We welcome the faithful, the seeker and the doubter, for

God’s embrace is wide and God’s Good News is for all!

PRAYERS FORST. LUKE’S &

OUR SAVIOURPARISH FAMILIES

much greater than anything you’llfind under a tree. I also know thatreceiving that gift calls forpreparation as much as any partyyou’ll go to. Imagine if this monthyou spent as much time in prayerand reading and family time as youdo in shopping and cooking. Whatwould your Advent be like?

There are ways to simplifyChristmas to allow this to happen. One way is to shop by catalog oronline. I recommend ELCAGoodGifts or Episcopal Relief andDevelopmentGifts for Life. Forthat person who has everything, buya flock of chickens in their name.Feed a family that would otherwisego hungry. It’s easy and it’simportant.

On December 12, we will listentogether at an Advent Evensong. We will hear the Hebrew messages

of God’s coming reign of peace. We will hear the Gospel story ofGabriel’s message to Mary. We willwait together for the birth of Christ. Please join us for this specialservice, followed by – what else? –a dessert party at the rectory.

Over and over, Jesus tells disciplesto keep awake and keep watch. Hetells them – tells us – to save ourresources so that when he comes wewill have the energy to notice andfollow and join the party.

Being an Advent people does notmean leaving the party. It meanswaiting until the guest of honorcomes. It means patience and hopeand the joy that comes when ourdeepest desires are fulfilled.

God bless you all this month as youwatch and wait.

Another Fair is over and despite allthe hard work involved it provedagain to be a wonderful event inwhich St. Luke’s and Our Saviourmembers came together to workbehind the booths and in many otherways and the two churches showedthemselves on the day in all theirglory. We thank Pastor Shane foropening the day with a prayer. Itwas good to be reminded of why wewere there.

Thanks to everyone who helped outbefore, during and after the Fair. Thanks to those many people whocame back late on the Sunday beforeto set up and those who dismantledafter the fair was over. A specialthanks to Linda Brescia, Norman

A WORD FROM THE FAIR CHAIR, Jo Stephenson

Cardine, Gloria Jonassen, CarolMaxfield, and Greta Pallatta, whocame to the church during the weekbefore the sale to collect donationsand to select and price itemssuitable for sale.

We do not yet have figures forindividual booths but our totalincome before expenses was closeto $5,000! We should all giveourselves a pat on the back for agreat job. Expenses included aninvestment of $700 for a newbanner but it will last for years.

Finally, please note that LindaBrescia will hold a pre-Christmassale. Date TBA shortly.

If you happen to be on churchgrounds on the second and fourthSundays of each month and hear thesound of laughter, poke your head inand see what it’s all about. Parish

Fun Night guarantees all who attendjust as the name implies — fun andlots of it!

October proved to be especially funcarving our pumpkins and roastingthe seeds. There was a delicioussampling of Heidi’s homemadecookies and other goodies as well.

Not interested in playing any of theselected games? Not a problem.Sometimes the fun is all aboutwatching and soaking it all in. It’sfun to see rules being stretched andothers in their surprisingly com-petitive element (not mentioningany names!) One thing for sure isthat there is never a dull moment. What could be better than spendingtime with friends and family on aSunday evening?

What’s in store for the next ParishFun Night? Not sure what’s planned, never do. One certainty is that it’san evening jammed packed with funand laughter. Come spend anevening with us. Laughter iscontagious!

OUTREACH REPORT: ‘TIS THE SEASON

The holiday season is upon us Inaddition to Pastor Shane’s sug-gestions for giving, please make noteof some opportunities to give toneedy children and adults locally.

Donations via the Angel Treefor Youth Consultation Services,Hackensack

Once again we will be supportingYCS’s Secret Santa program but thisyear the requests are not fromtroubled teens but from pre-Kindergarten children, ages 2-5,attending a therapeutic nurseryschool. Most of them have sufferedabuse or other trauma which has leftthem with behavioral challenges, making them difficult for atraditional pre-school to handle. Thegoal is to ready them to attendregular Kindergarten in their owndistricts. The yellow angel on thetree gives you the first name, age anda choice of three requests for/from achild. They are mainly simplewishes (many just ask for clothes). Please take an angel, sign your nameagainst the appropriate spot on thelist on the Outreach board, and haveONE of the requests back at thechurch, with the recipient‘s nameindicated, by, latest,Wednesday,Dec. 15.

Women’s Rights InformationCenter, Englewood

Joan Grzenda will also be collectinggifts for adults and children who areclients of the Women’s RightsCenter in Englewood. The due date

is TBA but it is suggested that youhave these also back byDec. 15.

Women’s Rights Center is alsoconducting aWINTER COATDRIVE. They are in particularneed of women’s size 16 and larger. They are accepting gently worn, cleaned, winter coats on hangersthat will be distributed to lowincome adults and children duringthesecond week of December.Joan Grzenda can pick them up atSt. Luke’s & Our Saviour ordonations may be brought to theWomen’s Center at 108 WestPalisade Avenue, in Englewoodduring the week on Mondaysbetween 3:30 P.M. and 5:30 P.M.on Wednesdays between 10:00A.M. and 12:00 Noon.

So, what coats haven’t you worn inthe last couple of years? Pleaseshare this with friends.

BOOK CLUB

Thank YouFrom Pastor Kathleen Rusnak

Dear Members of Our Saviour,

Thank you so much for the chaliceand paten that you gave me on mylast Sunday with you. The twelveApostles surround the base. Because the gift was given to meduring the last worship service andbefore Holy Communion, thechalice and paten were used for theLord’s Supper. What a wonderfuland moving experience it was tohave you receive the bread and winefrom your gift.

I will always cherish the words onthe back of the Paten: “With loveand appreciation for your

steadfastness and guidance: 2001-2010. From the members andfriends of Our Saviour LutheranChurch, Cresskill/Haworth, N.J.,October 2010.” This chalice andpaten will be a living memory of mytime with you.

The congregation of OurSaviour  has also given me thegenerous gift of two months ofhealth insurance, covering themonths of November andDecember, 2010. Thank you so verymuch. Know that this is very helpfulas I transition to living off of mybusiness only.

My thanks to all of Our Saviour andSt. Luke’s for the delightful potluckfollowing the service, for yourwords of love and blessings. I domiss you all, and keep you in mymind and heart. I pray for you.

In the words of the Episcopalianliturgy prior to the offering  that Ilove so dearly,
