Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The Lord is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!

When I was in seminary in New York City, I was a member of our school’s Guild of Chimers. This was a group of students who, ten minutes before each Evening Prayer or Eucharist service, would advance up a rickety staircase in our chapel’s bell tower and play hymns on long, loud carillon bells. For our seminary community, this playing was a call to worship, an invi-tation to come to chapel, and a signal to the people at General Theological Seminary (and its surrounding Chelsea neighbor-hood) that we were coming together to praise God.

One of my favorite moments during my three years in seminary was during the Easter Vigil of my second year. During the first part of the Vigil, the church is shrouded in dark-ness as we hear once again “the record of God’s saving deeds in history,” leading up to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the middle of these readings, there is the great Easter Proclamation – the lights are brought up, Alleluias are shouted, bells are rung, and the church joins together in singing Gloria in excelsis. It is a raucous, joyous, celebratory part of the service.

At that moment of that particular Easter Vigil when I was in my second year of seminary, when the chapel service reached this point in the service, I was up in the bell tower, chiming the Chelsea Changes – a set of musical scales that always started off a chiming session. While Chapel attendees joined the organ in singing out Gloria’s, I got to play these changes so that the rest of our community, as well as the surrounding community, could hear the musical news proclaiming that Christ is Risen.

It was an emotional and spiritual high for me, and as I’ve reflected on it, I’ve thought about how the Easter season might be a bit like this moment. In the bell tower there are about a dozen different bells, each one ringing out a different pitch – so that when struck, these different pitches would combine to make harmony and beautiful music. That particular night during the Easter Vigil, these bells all rang out different pitches, yet they all proclaimed the same message: Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

This Easter season, what if we imagined ourselves like these bells? Every one of us having a unique, distinct, and inimitable style of delivering the same message of Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Each one of us has something – it may be song, dance, poetry, written word, painting, drawing, pottery, sewing, craft-making, laughter, walking, athleticism, listening, or even just sharing your presence with someone else. Whatever yours may be and wherever you go, let your life this season proclaim God’s love and power that saves us from death and gives us everlasting life. Alleluia!

Responses to Violence April 14 | 6:15 p.m.

We at The Training and Counseling Center at St Luke’s (TACC) are struggling with the violence we see in the news and in our local communities. How can the church, the com-munity, and the individual respond? How can we understand justice and mercy in our world today? Please join us April 14 for a panel discussion on this important topic. We invite you to come for hors d’oeuvres at 6:15 p.m. in the Parish Hall and the panel discus-sion at 7 p.m. Local pastors, mental health professionals, as well as legislative and community activists will share their opinions and experiences. The Rev. Dan Matthews will moderate this discussion. More infor-mation and tickets are available on the TACC website at www.trainingandcounseling.org.

In April we’re collecting CLEANING SUPPLIES

As welcomed as I may feel at St. Luke’s (I do!), the truth is that I’m still very new. And not just new to this parish, but new to this city. Jay and Charlie and I have established a familiar routine, we have our tricks for commuting to and from work, we know faces and names, we feel at home with the people we work with. And yet, if something hap-pens—something that requires a conversation with a trusted friend I can be real with—I have to pick up the phone and call someone hundreds of miles away. It will be months before I have close friends in this city that I can sit down with and be vulnerable with in that true-friendship kind of way. I’ve got my long distance tribe, but the local tribe will take time.

Is this you too? Do you ever feel that loneliness of just wishing you had a community of trust and support?

Glennon Doyle Melton is an author and blogger and self-proclaimed truth-teller. She actually sees that as her vocation—telling her truth. A group of St. Luke’s women went to hear her speak at an event recently. Our POLO (Parents of Little Ones) group orga-nized the outing, but I’ll tell you there were just as many “par-ents of not-so-little-ones” and “not parents at all” in attendance. Sadly, there was not a great deal of diversity among the 1000 women gathered—I’m just being honest because Glennon chal-lenged us all to tell our truth!

Afterwards, a few of us went out to debrief. We mostly talked about all the ways we do NOT have our stuff together. And the pressure we feel to keep up appearances.

Church ought to be the safest place in the world to not have it together. Church ought to be the place where we can let our wounds breathe after cov-ering them with Band-Aids all week. And it can be. Each of us has a part to play in making this a safe space, starting with showing up just the way we are. If you feel like you can’t keep it together, come on over. If you feel like you may not fit in with a certain group here, come on anyway. If you think, “Gosh, I’d hate for my priest to know that about me,” come speak your truth.

Because the truth is none of us have it all together. And the sooner we admit that to ourselves and to each other, the sooner we can experience the kind of deep relationships we’re lonely for and the meaningful growth we’re hoping for. Jesus visited the disciples after his

resurrection and showed them his wounds. We worship a wounded Lord. So come on with your hands and hearts open, wounds and all. We will all be a better church for it.

Our Sunday School Teachers are amazing. They volunteer their time to teach our young children each Sunday asking for nothing in return. They share their compassion, kind-ness, and patience with our children, and for that, we are grateful. Please help up show our appreciation by donating fresh cut flowers and greenery that will be used to create special gifts for them.

On Sunday, May 1, we’ll celebrate with our youth who are preparing to reach a milestone in their journeys: High School Graduation! A youth will deliver the sermon that Sunday, and we’ll have a celebration ceremony during the 9 a.m. service for all high school graduates.

As we prepare for our service, we are asking families with high school graduates to send us the following information:• Full name (first, middle, last)• Photo (a senior pic would work great!) • Parents’ names• High School graduating from• Post-High School plans /college attending • Ring size (we will have a ring sizer at St. Luke’s, so next time you’re at

church, please see The Rev. David Wagner to measure; there are also online ring sizers that you can use).

TO SUBMIT INFORMATION: Fill out the form on the St. Luke’s website under the Sign Up tab and email your digital image to us or email all the information to:

[email protected]

DEADLINE: Monday, April 11 - it will be here sooner than you think!
