“Faith” Greetings friends from the campus of Woodhaven Senior Community. It has been a bit since I have shared my thoughts via the monthly newsletter. I asked Karen a few days ago if she would mind and she graciously thought it was a good idea. It is important to use another platform to share my thoughts, especially since I have been mostly communicating directly with the phone (with state and local officials) and or by weekly e-mail blasts on Friday nights since the beginning of the Coronavirus back in March.
So here we go. As for my year end thoughts, 2020 has been unique to say the least. If I had to
sum it up in one word it would be “Faith”. The definition of “Faith” is “complete trust or confidence in someone or something”. Think about it, especially when times are tough for us
physically, mentally, financially and emotionally, we tend to turn to our own form of “Faith” to help us through tough times, not to mention trying to survive a global pandemic. For the
most part, in my opinion, we have relied on our inner “Faith” in 2020, being extremely dependent to the medical world, first responders and essential workers to guide us through the daily ups and downs that COVID-19 has put before us, all the while hoping for a vaccine to cure this dreaded disease. In my 50 years of life, I have never been so much at the mercy of
something so out of my control that my own personal “Faith” has truly been my best friend.
Trust me, my “Faith” has been tested daily this past year. I can only wish that we will have
this storm behind us very soon and it will be by relying on all of our positive “Faith” to have greatly assisted one and all in such an unprecedented year.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support and prayers. I wish everyone a safe and very health 2021!
God Bless,

Resident of the Month Jim & Lois Blackburn
Meet Jim and Lois Blackburn. When they originally came to
Woodhaven they resided in the Meadows building, but moved 2 years ago to
Fountain View when they required a little more assistance. Both Jim and Lois
were born and raised in Michigan. Lois was born in Owosso in 1933 and Jim in Hubbard Lake in
1932. Lois’s family were farmers and she along with her four brothers and 2 sisters helped run
the farm. Jim’s parents both worked in factories in the Detroit area. He had only one brother.
Jim and Lois met while attending Free Methodist College in Spring Arbor Michigan in
1952. After returning from service in the army during the Korean conflict they were married in
1956 and this June they will celebrate 64 years of wedded bliss. Together they raised their four
children, two boys and two girls. They both graduated with teaching degrees and so their working
careers were spent in the field of education. Jim taught Industrial Arts at Alpena High School and
Lois taught in several elementary schools, primarily working with fourth graders. Jim retired in
1979 with 32 years of service and Lois in 1983 with 26. As retirees they enjoyed several years as
snowbirds, spending their winters in Florida. Over the years both Jim and Lois have enjoyed having hobbies. Jim was an avid hunter and
fisherman. Lois’s passion was for sewing, once making Jim a three-piece suit. Both Jim and Lois
have beautiful voices and during their time here at Woodhaven they have provided with us with
many evenings leading residents in song. Jim actually belonged to a men’s quartet traveling the
mid-west doing concerts.
I asked them what it was about Woodhaven that brought them here. They replied that ini-
tially it was on the suggestion of one of their daughters who knew several people in her church
familiar with Woodhaven. Today it is the camaraderie of their fellow residents and the kindness of
the people around them that makes living here a pleasure.
COVID-19 VACCINE We are all anxiously awaiting the
Coronavirus vaccine knowing it will move us in the direction of a more normal life here at
Woodhaven. Know that we are in continuous contact with Walgreen’s, who has committed
administer the vaccine to all qualifying residents. As soon as there is any confirmation of a
scheduled date we will inform the residents and their families.

Frasier's Facts
The name for January comes from the Roman god, Janus, who is al-
ways depicted with two heads. He uses one head to look back on the year before, and the other head to
look forward into the New Year!
Health News
Since the beginning of the pandemic there has been much confusion and misinformation on how
effective wearing masks is as a prevention to spreading the virus. Recently Mayo clinic has released
the findings of an unpublished study they have been working on regarding the efficacy of wearing
masks. The study was conducted to show how effective masks, along with social distancing, are in
the prevention of spreading the coronavirus. Researchers in the study simulated different scenarios
of transmission such as in work areas and dining to measure the amount of respiratory droplets and
aerosols when one person is masked, when both are masked and when neither were masked. The
study found that when a COVID-positive person wears a mask the amount of exposure on others is
reduced by more than 90%, even at just one foot distance. The also found that if a COVID-positive
person is unmasked but others around them were, the exposure was still reduced by 60% at one foot
and much more with greater distance between the individuals. The study also found that paper
masks and cloth masks, when worn correctly, are equally effective. While it is evident that wearing
masks is important it is equally important to wear your mask correctly. Masks should be
commercial medical grade quality or 2 ply cloth. Masks should not have a vent or open weave such
as a knitted mask. A properly fitting mask will cover your nose and mouth completely. It will not
slip off your nose when talking. There should not be gaps at the sides of the mask. Cloth masks
should be washed often. They can be hand washed with detergent and air dried. Disposable masks
should be discarded if visibly soiled and should be worn no more than 3 days. Studies have shown
that masks do work as a deterrent. They not only protect you, but also others around you. As our
Governor has asked, do the selfless thing, “Mask up and mask right”.

Yin & Yang of 2020
As in years past I have themed my January Karen’s Korner on how life balances out in the
end, the yin and yang so to speak. This year I want to look at 2020. For all of us it has
provided unprecedented challenges, but it has also shown us how resilient we are as human
beings. Here are my thoughts:
Yin: We have had to face a global pandemic threatening lives and livelihoods of billions of
people.
Yang: We have seen science and our government respond with unparalleled speed toward a
common goal which witnessed international cooperation and assistance.
Yin: Many of us have been unable to be with our loved ones face-to-face or to have any
physical contact.
Yang: We have discovered a new virtual way of connecting with family and friends which
has sometimes provided a way to see those who we may have not been able to see in person
because of geographic restraints.
Yin: We have been unable to enjoy dining out or going to a movie due to social distance
guidelines and restrictions
Yang: People have rediscovered the joy of family movie night at home, drive-in theaters and
many movie productions companies have opted for streaming releases for a small fee making
it more affordable to see new movies. Restaurants have found alternative methods for their
diners such as curb side pick up and outdoor dining. There are many who have found their
inner chef learning new recipes and cooking methods while experiencing the joy of cooking.
Yin: Voting this year was a challenge with long lines and sanitization and social distancing
protective guidelines to abide by.
Yang: We saw a record numbers of Americans turn out to vote. Whether republican,
democrat or alternative political party, Americans demonstrated their fervent passion for
their political beliefs and did not let inconvenience deter them.
Yin: We have seen little of our sports and entertainment figures, who we often look up to and
admire.
Yang: We have a new set of heroes who have come to the forefront. Nurses, other health care
personal, grocery and retail workers, delivery drivers, and teachers have become our new
heroes, helping to renew our faith and confidence in our fellow man.
There is no doubt that 2020 will go down historically as a year that has left us para-
lyzed and frustrated in so many ways, but we human beings ARE resilient, and we will all
find ourselves on the other side of this global crisis stronger and better for experiencing it.
Faith in God, our government, and our neighbors and community will see us through. All we
have to do is look to them for support and offer support as we move toward the common
goal.

reduced by them.” —Maya Angelou

Resident Literary Page Another Year
New Year has always been a time of hope, new aspirations, new endeavors, and new
possibilities. Another year to fulfill our dreams and to make promises to ourselves and to
one another, what we will do and the things we will change. Most of us know the promises
will be broken or even forgotten, as we are drawn back into our daily routines, but more or
less, we continue year after year to bring in the new year with some hope that we can
change and make things better.
This year is unpredictable, with a series of questions which leads us forward to another
year, but we have no idea what will happen to us in the new year. What will we gain or what
will be lost. Last year is over, so forget it. Look ahead and try to mend our mistakes, our
relationships, and other faults that may disturb us. We have another chance at making things
right. May our hearts guide us through another year. First of all, we need to remind
ourselves that what is going on in our worlds right now is not our fault, so don’t blame
yourselves. You may not think you are doing that but ask yourself, how much more upset
you have been since the pandemic started. We all have been upset at one time or another.
Many of us feel that since the world is in disarray, we have to do everything that is put in
front of us. Well, that’s not going to happen and it’s not a bad thing. It’s just life. Besides,
things are going to go the way the way they used to eventually. There will be more bumps
in the road and the way forward is uncertain. We really don’t know what is going to happen
this next year. It just makes sense to ride this out with the understanding that it will end.
Time just keeps rolling on year after year. Some years seem the same and others are
different, but we have survived them all. We don’t have to make something happen in an
environment where most everyone and everything is retracting. Wait until things improve,
and they will. Then we will have the opportunity to revisit our dreams and our promises.
Thoughts: America at time seems to have gone away. America that we once truly had. I am
talking about what it is that we want our country to become, about how we can save
ourselves. The elusive answer is out there in the mist of an indeterminate future, waiting to
be magically discovered and plucked from the sky. But maybe the answer is not
somewhere out in the distance future, maybe the answer is one we already had but
somehow threw away. The answer is hidden off somewhere waiting to be retrieved.
May our hearts guide us through another year and may the year be kind to one and all.
Ed Allen

A Brand New Year
I know we all are looking back Upon the year that has just past, And everyone feels quite the same, I’m glad that it is gone at last.
We’ve been through such uncertainty That changed our normal way of life. Some dealt with more than others, But all have felt the pain and strife.
We now can look to the new year, With plans for many better things. Through healing and activities, We’ll reap the benefits it brings.
“Lord keep our country safe and strong” Will be my simple prayer this year, “And grant good health, great joy and love To every person I hold dear.”

Worth a Fortune
Remember, old folks are worth a fortune, with silver in their hair, gold in their
teeth, stones in their kidneys, lead in their feet and gas in their stomachs. I have become
a little older since I saw you last and a few changes have come into my life since then.
Frankly, I have become quite a frivolous old gal. I am seeing five gentlemen every day.
As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me get out of bed. Then I go to see John.
Charlie Horse comes along and he takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves,
Arthur Ritus shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn’t like to stay in one place
very long so, he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day I’m really tired and
glad to go to bed with Ben Gay. What a life!
P.S. The preacher came to call the other day. He said at my age I should be thinking
about the hereafter. I told him, Oh, I do, all the time. No matter where I am, in the
parlor, in the kitchen, or down the basement, I ask myself, what am I her after?

Clubhouse Happenings From Karen
Happy New Year. Let’s all hope for a better
2021 and say good riddance to 2020. There have been
several inquiries in regards to COVID testing and schedule
for vaccinations. I am in ongoing conversations with
Walgreens, who will be providing the vaccine when it
becomes available. As the time draws near I will be
sending out additional information as to when the vaccine
clinic will happen. I will also be canvasing the community
for who wants the vaccine prior to the scheduled date.
Clubhome residents will come to the clubhouse to be
vaccinated as we did for the flu shot clinic.
On a happier note, congratulations to the Jones’s
and the Schimpf’s for the beautiful outdoor holiday
display they mutually created. Good Job! Enjoy your
Olive Garden dinner on Woodhaven. As restrictions are
lifted we will be opening up the clubhouse for limited
activities, primarily the fitness center and the pool.
Hopefully in the early part of 2021 we will be able to see
the gradual return of normal activities and hours for your
clubhouse enjoyment.
For now, stay warm, stay safe and stay optimistic. This
will be over sooner than later.
