FROM THE PASTOR
Dear friends,
I want to extend to you a personalinvitation to you to attend the Day
of Discovery on September 20th. Itis only a month away and it is timeto officially put it in your calendar.
Our life is truly a mission, and thus it requires pray-er and discernment as to how we will fulfill thatmission. The mission is served by the use of thegifts and charisms that God is giving to us. Thegifts are those things that make us holy, set apart, and a light to others. The charisms are those thingsthat make us useful for the betterment of GodsKingdom.
Discover these gifts and these charisms at this spe-cial day of prayer and reflection. These are gifts andcharisms not only for the enrichment of your ownpersonal life as a Christian but also to serve themission of the parish, so that we are responding tothe signs of the times in our local area.
My prayer is that through this day we will trulyembark on the path of being a light in East Countythat people look to for guidance in how to be dedi-cated disciples of Jesus Christ, virtuous citizens, and
loving neighbors. On another note I wanted to officially announcethat over the summer we have had three employeesmove on from our family of Santa Sophia. Truly, our staff is remarkable, working long hours anddedicated to their ministry. I am grateful for thework of Tina Jellison, Georgene Kruzel, and Br.Kevin McGoff. This has lead to an influx of newemployees that I want you to get to know a littlebit. So for the next four weeks you will see a littlebio about each one.
Bill Smirniotis has been hired as our business man-ager. Sara Gonzales has been hired as our new re-ceptionist. Maria Belflower as our new administra-tive assistant. David Stevens has been hired as ournew Director of Liturgical Music.
Please start saying your prayers for these newemployees as they adjust to the new environment.
Praised be Jesus Christ!

Making the sign of the cross is a sacred action in which we bless ourselves or others. It is
a reminder of the price Christ paid for us, our sins and our redemption, and it is an outward
confirmation of our faith and belief in the Holy Trinity (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).
This outward sign of tracing the cross of Jesus as we verbally profess our belief in the Holy Trinity
physically reinforces our interior faith in the love God pours out to us through Jesus in the Holy Spirit.
With this faith, we make the sign of the cross to ask for and receive Gods favor, Gods protection,
Gods blessing.
The sign of the cross is made at the beginning and end of every Mass. We trace the sign of the
cross on our foreheads, lips and hearts just before the Gospel reading. Priests bless us with the sign of
the cross when we are gathered together on various occasions and for special purposes during the cele-
bration of the seven Sacraments.
We also make the sign of the cross as individuals before and after personal prayer, or as a prayer all
by itself.
A priest often blesses a group by tracing the sign of the cross with his right hand. We make the
sign of the cross by reverently touching the forehead, then the chest, then the shoulders (left shoulder
first) with our right forefingers, and then by putting both hands together as in prayer. While we are
making the sign of the cross, we recite the following words either out loud or internally: In the name
of the Father as the forehead is being touched, and of the Son as the chest is being touched, and of
the Holy Spirit as each shoulder is touched, and then Amen as our hands are clasped together.
This gesture is meant to be a real and unhurried sign.
For God so loved the world that He gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish butmight have eternal life
John 3:16
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you alwaysI will not leave you orphans
