The Epiphany of the Lord January 5, 2014

"They prostrated themselves and did him homage." The Magi were men of great faith. Their worldly position and power could have made them scoff at the sight of this humble infant. But instead these men placed themselves at the feet of Jesus in a gesture of complete submission. Only a deep and sincere faith could justify such a surprising scene. Real faith often runs contrary to worldly wisdom. But the eyes of faith can see much more than the eyes of the world alone. Are we willing to leave our comfort zone for the sake of the Gospel? Are we willing to share our wealth to glorify God? Are we willing to submit our desires and plans to the authority of Christ? As we begin the journey of this New Year, let us resolve to follow in the faithful footsteps of the Magi. 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc, LPI Resource Center.

Dear friends, On the Feast of the Epiphany the magi (wise men) found the one they were seeking. About 55 years ago parishioner Henry Weismann constructed the cross we were seeking for our parish commu-nity. It holds the corpus, carved in Italy, and both form the crucifix that honors the passion of our Lord Jesus.

This great crucifix still today stands as the largest indoor crucifix west of the Mississippi river. The contractors along with structural engineers and architects have been observing closely this beautiful crucifix after the damage it incurred in the fire. They have gone back and forth as to whether it needs to come down and a few weeks ago they shared with me that the cross needs to come down.

The unfortunate reality is that the cross coming down in-volves not a repair, but a replacement of the actual cross. I write this with a heavy heart. The replacement of the cross will be a to scale replica of course but it fills my heart with sorrow that the current cross will not be back in its origi-nal place.

I have offered special prayers this week for the founding parishioners both living and deceased. I have prayed that the Holy Spirit would prepare your hearts and all of our family for this news. In particular I have prayed in grati-tude for the Weismann family to whom we are indebted to for this beautiful cross, which has been the focal point of the sacrifice of the Holy Mass here at Santa Sophia for over 50 years.

The cross is not entirely unusable of course and I have a few ideas of ways to make sure it still has a home somehow someway here at Santa Sophia. If anything comes to your mind please email me using the email in the parish bulletin. As for other updates, our facilities manager, Jim Kinney, and myself are working with the contractors to hire sub-contractors for the new fire system, electrical repairs, light-ing repairs, new sound system, and interior design. Repair of the cross will be on-going as these projects progress.

After those projects, the following efforts will begin: the wall repair behind the crucifix (which leads into work areas for our sacristans), replacement of the flooring in the main body of the church, and finally, reassembling and place-ment of the pews. It is good to be past the first major phase, which as ex-pected, had the most hiccups and hold ups. The path to completion of the project is much clearer at this point, however, the coordination of such a large project does take

O U R C O M M O N G R O U N D GIVING TREE was a wonderful success this year. Thanks to you, there are more than a hundred children in our Spring Valley community who opened a gift on Christmas morning and many families were spared from having to make the choice between food and clothing. For most of these children, you made the difference between joy and disappointment.

A resource administrator at one of our partner schools asked that we deliver this message to you, You brought real joy to many families in need this year.

The infant Jesus warms our hearts to the needs of others. Thank God were able to help.

    REFLECTION

M an cannot live without love. He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not par-ticipate intimately in it. This, as has already been said, is why Christ the Redeemer "fully reveals man to himself". If we may use the expression, this is the human dimension of the mystery of the Redemption. In this dimension man finds again the greatness, dig-nity and value that belong to his humanity. In the mystery of the Redemption man becomes newly "expressed" and, in a way, is newly created. He is newly created! "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus". The man who wishes to understand himself thoroughly-

and not just in accordance with immediate, partial, often superficial, and even illusory standards and measures of his being-he must with his unrest, un-certainty and even his weakness and sinfulness, with his life and death, draw near to Christ. He must, so to speak, enter into him with all his own self, he must "appropriate" and assimilate the whole of the reality of the Incarnation and Redemption in order to find himself. If this profound process takes place within him, he then bears fruit not only of adoration of God but also of deep wonder at himself. How precious must man be in the eyes of the Creator, if he "gained so great a Redeemer"65, and if God "gave his only Son "in order that man "should not perish but have eternal life".

Blessed John Paul II, Redemptor Hominis, 10.

time Joseph makes an appearance in the story is when Jesus is 12 and goes missing in Jerusalem. Mary remains in the company of Jesus until the Cru-cifixion, when her care is transferred to the beloved disciple, confirming that Joseph is already dead.

In Matthews portrait we encounter Joseph the righteous man who, understandably, does not want to marry a woman who turns up pregnant without his participation. Of two possible legal solutionsexposure to violent punishment or quiet divorce by paperworkJoseph chooses the gentler. Then heaven intervenes and gives him consequential sec-ond thoughts. He takes Mary into his home and gives her his full protection.

    QUESTIONS CATHOLICS ASK

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT ST. JOSEPH?

    By Alice Camille

THE EARLIEST gospel, Marks, calls the adult Jesus son of Mary rather than Joseph and suggests

his father was absent, dead, or suspect. This reso-nates with Mary known to be with child before the marriage, and/or that Joseph was dead by the time Jesus grew up. Luke and John prefer to call Jesus son of Joseph, restoring respect to his patrimony. Luke adds pointedly, As was thought. When the family of Jesus comes around during his ministry, his father is conspicuously absent.

Jesus is called a carpenter and carpenters son, which is how we know his fathers occupation. The last

T he children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted it on the apple tray:

Take only ONE . God is watching.

Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.

A child had written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples.'

    PARISH FAMILY NEWS

IM A PARISHIONER OF SANTA SOPHIA I THINK!

Many adults believe they are registered at Santa Sophia because 1) their parents or other members of their house-hold are (or were) registered here; 2) they were once a stu-dent at the Academy; 3) they received one or more Sacra-ments of Initiation here; or 4) they come to Mass at Santa Sophia.

Its true that Catholics living within certain geographic boundaries effectively belong to Santa Sophia, but a regis-tration at the parish is required in order to officially be listed in the parish census, especially for those who live out-side of those boundaries.

If you now live outside of those boundaries, and are not registered, your place of residence may mean that our par-ish staff will not be available to your family for pastoral care even if you attend Santa Sophia regularly because you are not formally associated with the parish.

Even if you live inside the parish boundaries you still need to register. Adequate ministry planning for our parish de-pends on its registered members being active, supportive, and identifiable! Your registration helps us know what re-sources we need to minister to our parish community.

We welcome you to worship and serve with us. On behalf of the parish staff, if you are not already registered, we invite you to consider becoming a registered parishioner.

Once registered, we will keep in contact with you and to-gether well enjoy our shared journey in the life and ongo-ing mission of Jesus.

For questions about your registration status please call Georgene at the parish office at (619)463-6629.

time. Once our sub-contractors are in place we will have a much better estimate for a date when we can resume Masses in our church. I thank you for your patience and continued prayers for the many people working on these projects. Please pray for them because they are working hard, long hours for us. In Christ,
