RAD 104

Safe patient movement and handling techniques

ObjectivesDefine the terms related with body

mechanicsDescribe Orthostatic HypotensionDescribe the basic principals of proper

lifting and transfer of patientsExplain four types of wheelchair transfersDescribe a cart to table transfer

procedureIdentify five standard patient position

Terminology• MSDS• OSHA• Orthostatic hypotension• Stability• Pivot• Mobility• Syncope • Bradycardia

Why ?

• 2% of employees have work related back problem

Body mechanicsBase of support

refers to the area beneath a person that includes every point of contact that the object or person makes with the supporting surface.

Body mechanicsCenter of gravity

is a hypothetical point around which the force of gravity appears to act. It is point at which the combined mass of the body appears to be concentrated

Body mechanicsLine of Gravityan imaginary line that extends from the center of gravity to the base of support.

Principles of Body Mechanics:• have a stable base of support (e.g.

widening the distance between the feet),• have a stable center of gravity (e.g.

keeping the cumulative weight or load near to the center of the base of support), &

• Have a stable line of gravity (e.g. center of gravity passes a perpendicular line to the center of the base of support.

To avoid back injury

Mobility and stability muscles

• Caused by venous pooling in the legs and abdomen, loss of skeletal muscle pump, and impaired nervous system control of BP

• May occur with position changes and can result in syncope, bradycardia, or asystole.

Orthostatic Hypotension

Principals for Safe Transfers

Important Tips• Provide privacy to the patient by closing the door of the x-

ray room.• Explain to the patient the procedure and his/her role in the

transfer to assure him/her and to make the cooperation easier and more certain

• Never forget to lock the wheels of the wheelchair or the cart/ stretcher/ bed

• Synchronize your efforts ( on 3 ,,, 1 - 2 -3 GO)• Determine which one is the stronger radiographer• Follow the Body Mechanics Principals • Do the same steps to transfer the patient from the x-ray

table to the stretcher.• Allow the patient to help as much as possible.• Never forget to support the head and neck , especial in ER• Take care of loose arms and legs from getting caught

midway

Patient Safety and Comfort:

Safety: • NO obstacles • clear fire exit signs.• Avoid Electrical , Chemical or Infectious hazards.comfort : • 1. waiting area.• 2. ventilation.• 3. adequate explanation of delays.• 4. Keep the waiting area neat/ clean, tidy

and fresh and provide comfortable chairs.• 5. distract the children, patients, relatives
