Raymond A. Foss, Esq.
A poet who does law
to pay the bills (for now)
A Life in Transition
• Searching for my niche – (need to grow up soon)
• Growing where I am – (in the law)
• Supporting my family – (that would be nice)
• Doing what I love – (poetry)
• Trying to be a whole person – (volunteering)
Changing plans
• I thought I would continue what I was doing
• I went to law school
• Started with Education Law
• Moved to Family Law
• Started more poetry
• Focus on my passion– 2,700 poems in last year
Poetry Where You Live• Poetry Where You Live is a state of mind,
believing that, like God’s grace, poetry is where you live, not something you have to seek out in some distant place.
• Writing for the last 10 years– 175 poems at law school graduation – 5/2004– Just hit 6,500 poems on 4/3/2010
• Set up web site – Just hit 6 years in February– Now another site
• Looked at Facebook– Created business pages for law and poetry
But not exclusively (not yet)
• Being okay with being good at more than one thing
• Using all my talents
• Doing what I love
• And doing what helps others
• Believing I have a wonderful life

Needing to focus
Seeing the beauty
Sharing My Joy
A Rainbow of HopeAn urgent call
a race down the dark stairs
a flicker of color as I ran outside
an arc, His bow, His promise
shown down on us
standing in awe and wonder
the rich color muted in the city
It curves over the alley
above the tenements, the wires
the clutter, the stresses of life
a timely reminder
in good times and bad
of your faithfulness,
your covenant with your people
a beautiful arc, a shimmering bow
a pleasure to behold
a piece of hope placed
for a moment, a few seconds
unnoticed by so many,
lost in the push and pull
of daily living
shared with those lucky few
who stopped for a moment or two
and looked up
Casting StonesCasting stones
out into the deep waters
creating ripples
to wash across the word
Words of love
of comfort, of hope
sharing messages of Christ
his lessons for our lives
to bring us back to God
The Ripples ReturningIn casting the seeds
the stones, the wordsinto the ground, the sea
ripples touching distant shoresbut sometimes returning to me
A wonder, in the sharingthe words finding fertile soil
reaching hearts opensending their love in reply
Returning these gifts from Godthat they would be planted deeper in me
Casting more stones out into seaseeds on the wind,
planted on distant shores
Points on a SphereNot poles on a linestatic and unchanginga yes or a noin black and white
Not even arcs of a circleme in the center, segmenting timeplaces where spokes alight Points on a sphereever turning, moving like a ballrolling across an uneven floor Such are the choicesmy identifies, roles movingnot either or but yes to them all

Living More PurposefullyNot to claim a victory
not our own validationliving more purposefullyto stay centered on God
Not drifting with the wind
not following the flow of the crowdwalking with my savior
on the road laid before me
Using my gifts, my talentshearing my master’s callpersevering in adversity
courage, committing my all
