Population: 176,463

Density of population: 1997.8 person/square km

Flag: coat of arms:

Olsztyn is one of the oldest places in Warmia. It was set up in the middle of 14th century. It received the civic privilege from

The Cathedral Chapter and the bishop according to Chełmno law in 1353. Olsztyn and Warmia became a part of Prussia in 1772 because of the annexation. Later, there were many disasters in Olsztyn - fires were especially disastrous, so it did not develop much in the Middle Ages.

At the time of annexation there were merely 1770 citizens here.

The location of the town was very important for its further development. First, it became a communication centre. Second, as the centre of the Polish part of Warmia, it developed into an important centre of administrative authority. In 1905 comprising Polish Warmia and Polish Mazury a regency was established. After World War II Olsztyn it became the first capital of Mazuria District and since 1946 – the capital of the whole province of Warmia and Mazuria.
