In school, Nursery and Reception are following the Letters and Sounds programme.

Letters and Sounds consists of six phases, covered from Nursery to Year 2.

Year 1 and Year 2 will be following Letters and Sounds from January.

LETTER NAMES AND LETTER SOUNDS/PHONEMES

When teaching phonics we always refer to the letter name and the sound or phoneme.

PHASE 1: NURSERY There are 7 aspects with 3 strands. A1 – Environmental A2 – Instrumental sounds A3 – Body Percussion A4 – Rhythm and rhyme A5 – Alliteration A6 – Voice sounds A7 – Oral blending and segmenting.

PHASE 2: RECEPTIONSet 1: s, a, t, pSet 2: i, n, m, dSet 3: g, o, c, kSet 4: ck, e, u, rSet 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss

PHASE 3: END OF RECEPTION/BEGINNING OF YEAR 1

Set 6: j, v, w, xSet 7: y, z, zz, quConsonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng

Vowel digraphs: ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

PHASE 4: YEAR 1/2This phase consolidates all the children have learnt in the previous phases.

PHASE 5: YEAR 1/2Children will be taught new graphemes and alternative pronunciations for these graphemes.

Vowel digraphs:, ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, ew, oe, au

Split digraphs: a_e - cake u_e - hugei_e – kite o_e - hope

PHASE 6: YEAR 2The focus is on learning spelling rules for suffixes.
