Biography
Sousa biographer, Paul E. Bierley, has devoted his life to the study of John Philip Sousa and the world famousSousa Band. Bierley`s John Philip Sousa, American Phenomenon and The Works of John Philip Sousa (acatalog of Sousa`s original works, arrangements, and transcriptions)have received international recognition asthe standard reference resources for information about the life and works of the "March King." OtherSousa−related works by Mr. Bierley include Hallelujah Trombone (a biography of Henry Fillmore), TheMusic of Henry Fillmore and Henry Huff, Nineteenth Century American Musical Theater, Later Operetta,Part 1 (El Capitan), and the revised edition of Sousa`s Marching Along. Bierley served as editor for the twovolume set of William Rehrig`s 1991 The Heritage Encyclopedia Band Music (Volume 3, Supplement, 1996),has published many Sousa−related journal articles about the Sousa Band, and has provided liner notes fornumerous LPs and CDs. Mr. Bierley was featured in the 1993 PBS documentary, If You Knew Sousa.... He isan honorary member of the American Bandmasters Association, the John Philip Sousa Foundation, the RobertHoe Foundation, and the Society for American Music and holds memberships in many other organizations.
Music has always been a serous avocation for Mr. Bierley, an aeronautical engineer by profession. Active as aperforming musician, Bierley has served as a tubist for the Columbus, Ohio Symphony Orchestra, the BrassBand of Columbus, and with the World Symphony Orchestra (under the direction of Arthur Fiedler), and theNew Sousa Band (conducted by Keith Brion as John Philip Sousa). He also served as the assistant conductorof the North American Rockwell Concert Band.
