Organic agriculture as an opportunity for sustainable

agricultural development Verena Seufert

Department of Geography, McGill University

McGill Conference on Global Food Security October 17, 2012

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This Policy Brief was prepared as part of the McGill Institute for the Study of International Development (ISID) Research to Practice Graduate Student Fellowship in Development Studies, which was made possible through funding by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

CO2 CO2 Today

30% of anthropo-genic GHG emissions are from agriculture

70% of water withdrawals are for agriculture

One in six people in developing countries are undernourished

Tomorrow By 2050 meat consumption will double

By 2050 agriculture will need to feed 9 billion people

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In many regions diet changes may override pop growth as major driver behind increased food demand. Meat consumption: 465 million t annually by 2050 (1999/2001 it was 228,000,000 t)

Global sustainable food security more food

at affordable prices

ensuring livelihoods to farmers

& reducing the environmental cost of agriculture

Presenter
Presentation Notes
1-environmental benefits 2-yield performance 3-impact on farmers livelihoods 4-accessibility to poor farmers

• 0.9% of global agricultural land • 1/3 of land is in developing countries • > ¾ of producers are in developing countries • 2010: global market was 59 billion $ -> growing ca.

300% since 2000 • 96% of organic sales made in Eu & North America

Organic agriculture in numbers

Seufert et al. (2012) -> Yield performance depends on context

Study limitations

Seufert et al. (2012)

Most studies: - developed countries - commercial conventional systems

Problems Benefits

increased costs (?) reduced yields (?)

increased dependence increased labour

reduced costs (?) increased yields (?)

increased prices increased resilience increased benefits

increased employment

+ labour + certification + dependence on certifying & exporting companies

- inputs + organization & access to health & credit services

Organic agriculture and farmer livelihoods

Labour Availability of organic inputs Knowledge -> software based innovation Limited domestic demand Access to international markets Certification

Constraints to the adoption of organic agriculture

Policy recommendations: 1. Concentrate policies on countries and regions where organic

agriculture has the most potential. 2. Contribute to capacity building of organic farmer cooperatives. 3. Help in developing domestic organic markets. 4. Promote the development and integration of organic markets. 5. Support the development of participatory guarantee systems

(PGS). 6. Support research on organic agriculture in developing countries.

Constraints: Labour Availability of organic inputs Knowledge -> software based innovation Limited domestic demand Access to international markets Certification
