Gold

Spanish Conquistadors found extremely wealthy civilizations literally packed with gold that sparked a sort of gold rush• Monarchs needed gold to pay

their armies to maintain power

European powers found another source of wealth from the growth of sugar cane and the rise of sugar plantations• Start of mercantilism• Sparked the African Slave Trade

Glory

Some were just sparked on by the idea of fame, the fame of exploration as described by the original voyages of Marco PoloPrivateers raiding the Spanish Armada both in European waters as well as in the Americas

Influence men like Sir Walter Raleigh to establish the Roanoke expedition sponsored by Queen Elizabeth the “virgin queen”

Mercantilisman economic system used to increase the wealth and power of the “mother” country.

Developed during decay of feudalismCreate and Maintain wealth by imbalance of trade with new territory• Get resources from New World – Colonies• Manufacture finished goods back home- Old World (Europe)• Sell back to New World - Colonies

Sir Walter Raleigh & North Carolina

• Second attempt known as The Lost Colony of Roanoke

1663 Charter of Carolina – issued by King Charles II• Issued to 8 Lord Proprietors• Granting rights to rule the colony to the 8 individuals

Proprietary vs. Royal vs. Charter ColonyWhat’s the difference?:Royal Colony: DIRECTLY ruled by a monarch (King)Charter Colony: right to self govern granted to colonists via a charter (contract) with the King (England)Proprietary Colony: power to govern granted by the King to specific people • NC was Proprietary colony at first
