Spanish Conquistadors found extremely wealthy civilizations literally packed with gold that sparked a sort of gold rush• Monarchs needed gold to pay

their armies to maintain power

European powers found another source of wealth from the growth of sugar cane and the rise of sugar plantations• Start of mercantilism• Sparked the African Slave Trade

Some were just sparked on by the idea of fame, the fame of exploration as described by the original voyages of Marco PoloPrivateers raiding the Spanish Armada both in European waters as well as in the Americas
