JAPANESE FIRMSWIN BRAZILIANPOWER ORDER

Marubeni Corp andMitsubishi Heavy IndustriesLtd have jointly secured a ¥6billion contract to constructa 75 MW power generationsystem (boiler, turbine andgenerator) for the Braziliansteel maker CompanhiaSiderurgica de Tubarao’s(CST) Tubarao steelworks.

The Tubarao steelworks isalso planning to make a large-scale equipment investment toincrease its production capaci-ty further.

CHEMICALS

LYONDELL PLANSPROPYLENEOXIDE PILOT

PLANT Lyondell Chemical Co isbuilding an integrated pilotplant to further develop itsproprietary one-step, directoxidation PO technology.

The pilot plant will be builtat Lyondell’s TechnologyCenter in Newtown Square,Pennsylvania, and will be thefinal demonstration of thetechnology before commer-cialization. Lyondell’s operat-ing capacity for PO is about 4billion pounds per year.

“We have been workingfor many years on a technolo-gy that will produce PO in onestep without requiring an aux-iliary feedstock facility, suchas a hydrogen peroxide plant.The added benefit of our tech-nology is that it produces POwithout a co-product such asstyrene or tertiary butyl alco-hol,” said Ed Dineen, Lyondellsenior vice president of chemi-cals and polymers.

METSO FINALIZESGERMAN PULP

MILL CONTRACTMetso Paper has signed thefinal contract to supply apulping system to ZellstoffStendal GmbH’s greenfieldkraft pulp mill in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany with themain contractor, RWEIndustrie-Lösungen GmbH.

Delivery includes a com-plete pulping process fromwoodhandling to ready-madebales and a process automa-tion system for the entire mill supplied by MetsoAutomation. The contract isvalued at approximately �135million. The start-up of themill is scheduled for October2004.

The mill is designed for anannual capacity of 550 000tonnes of bleached softwoodmarket pulp. The chosen tech-nology is specially designedfor production of high qualityend product with minimumenvironmental impact.

FW WINS MERCKSHARP & DOHMEEPCM PROJECT

Foster Wheeler France SAhas been awarded a contractby Merck Sharp & DohmeSA for the engineering,

partial procurement andconstruction management ofa capacity expansion project,at Merck’s Mirabel site nearClermont-Ferrand, France.

As part of this project, thebuilding’s existing productionline will be doubled, and thebuilding will be expanded. Theplant is due to be completed inAugust 2003.

MHI TO BUILDDREDGER FORSUEZ CANALAUTHORITY

Mitsubishi Heavy IndustriesLtd (MHI) has received anorder for a large size dredgerfrom the Suez CanalAuthority of Egypt.

The vessel, which will bethe largest dredger ever built inJapan with a hopper capacityof 10 000 cubic metres, will bebuilt at the Kobe Shipyard andMachinery Works of MHI andis scheduled for delivery inJune 2004.

To date, MHI has deliveredsix dredgers to the Suez CanalAuthority. This order is thefirst dredger order that MHIhas received from the SuezCanal Authority in the past 18 years. MHI delivered adredger with the hopper capac-ity of 6500 cubic metres in1984, which was ordered in1983.

WATER &WASTEWATER

UNESCO, SUEZIMPROVE ACCESSTO SAFE WATER

Koïchiro Matsuura, director-general of UNESCO, andGérard Mestrallet, chairmanand CEO of Suez, havesigned a cooperation agree-ment to improve access towater for all.

Suez will provide about�300 000 for a number ofprojects including a UNESCOinterdisciplinary initiative torehabilitate the Volga-Caspianbasin. The company will alsohelp to finance activities in theUNESCO-IHE Institute forWater Education in Delft, theNetherlands, that will be for-mally launched later this year.

The new partnership willalso benefit the UNESCOChair for Integrated WaterResource Management, basedin Casablanca, Morocco. Thischair works closely with non-governmental organizations,university students and jour-nalists to raise public aware-ness about water governance.

FUNDING FORDRINKING WATERIN CENTRAL ANDNORTHERN LAO

The Asian DevelopmentBank (ADB) has signed anagreement for a US$700 000technical assistance grant tohelp Lao People’s Demo-cratic Republic prepare aproject to expand the drink-ing water supply and sanita-tion facilities in the northernand central regions.

The project will help LaoPDR reach its goal of provid-ing 24-hour access to safedrinking water and adequatesanitation for 80% of the urbanpopulation by 2020. The grantwill come from ADB’s JapanSpecial Fund, financed by theGovernment of Japan.

The project will supportthe government’s decentraliza-tion policy and promotion ofprivate sector participation bystrengthening the institutionalcapacity of the Water SupplyAuthority, the regulatoryagency, as well as trainingprovincial water supply com-panies to enable them to oper-ate commercially. Theseprovincial companies areresponsible for water supply in16 provinces and XaysombounSpecial Region.
