VOITH SIEMENS HYDRO WINS MODERNIZATION CONTRACT The Austria-based Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, in consortium with Siemens RT, Budapest, is to upgrade the Kiskoere hydro power station in Hungary for Tiszaviz Vizeroemue KFT. Work starts in summer 2003, with one unit being worked on at one year intervals. JAPANESE FIRMS WIN BRAZILIAN POWER ORDER Marubeni Corp and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd have jointly secured a ¥6 billion contract to construct a 75 MW power generation system (boiler, turbine and generator) for the Brazilian steel maker Companhia Siderurgica de Tubarao’s (CST) Tubarao steelworks. The Tubarao steelworks is also planning to make a large- scale equipment investment to increase its production capaci- ty further. CHEMICALS LYONDELL PLANS PROPYLENE OXIDE PILOT PLANT Lyondell Chemical Co is building an integrated pilot plant to further develop its proprietary one-step, direct oxidation PO technology. The pilot plant will be built at Lyondell’s Technology Center in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, and will be the final demonstration of the technology before commer- cialization. Lyondell’s operat- ing capacity for PO is about 4 billion pounds per year. “We have been working for many years on a technolo- gy that will produce PO in one step without requiring an aux- iliary feedstock facility, such as a hydrogen peroxide plant. The added benefit of our tech- nology is that it produces PO without a co-product such as styrene or tertiary butyl alco- hol,” said Ed Dineen, Lyondell senior vice president of chemi- cals and polymers. PULP & PAPER METSO FINALIZES GERMAN PULP MILL CONTRACT Metso Paper has signed the final contract to supply a pulping system to Zellstoff Stendal GmbH’s greenfield kraft pulp mill in Sachsen- Anhalt, Germany with the main contractor, RWE Industrie-Lösungen GmbH. Delivery includes a com- plete pulping process from woodhandling to ready-made bales and a process automa- tion system for the entire mill supplied by Metso Automation. The contract is valued at approximately 135 million. The start-up of the mill is scheduled for October 2004. The mill is designed for an annual capacity of 550 000 tonnes of bleached softwood market pulp. The chosen tech- nology is specially designed for production of high quality end product with minimum environmental impact. PHARMA- CUEUTICALS FW WINS MERCK SHARP & DOHME EPCM PROJECT Foster Wheeler France SA has been awarded a contract by Merck Sharp & Dohme SA for the engineering, partial procurement and construction management of a capacity expansion project, at Merck’s Mirabel site near Clermont-Ferrand, France. As part of this project, the building’s existing production line will be doubled, and the building will be expanded. The plant is due to be completed in August 2003. MARINE MHI TO BUILD DREDGER FOR SUEZ CANAL AUTHORITY Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI) has received an order for a large size dredger from the Suez Canal Authority of Egypt. The vessel, which will be the largest dredger ever built in Japan with a hopper capacity of 10 000 cubic metres, will be built at the Kobe Shipyard and Machinery Works of MHI and is scheduled for delivery in June 2004. To date, MHI has delivered six dredgers to the Suez Canal Authority. This order is the first dredger order that MHI has received from the Suez Canal Authority in the past 18 years. MHI delivered a dredger with the hopper capac- ity of 6500 cubic metres in 1984, which was ordered in 1983. WATER & WASTEWATER UNESCO, SUEZ IMPROVE ACCESS TO SAFE WATER Koïchiro Matsuura, director- general of UNESCO, and Gérard Mestrallet, chairman and CEO of Suez, have signed a cooperation agree- ment to improve access to water for all. Suez will provide about 300 000 for a number of projects including a UNESCO interdisciplinary initiative to rehabilitate the Volga-Caspian basin. The company will also help to finance activities in the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, the Netherlands, that will be for- mally launched later this year. The new partnership will also benefit the UNESCO Chair for Integrated Water Resource Management, based in Casablanca, Morocco. This chair works closely with non- governmental organizations, university students and jour- nalists to raise public aware- ness about water governance. FUNDING FOR DRINKING WATER IN CENTRAL AND NORTHERN LAO The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed an agreement for a US$700 000 technical assistance grant to help Lao People’s Demo- cratic Republic prepare a project to expand the drink- ing water supply and sanita- tion facilities in the northern and central regions. The project will help Lao PDR reach its goal of provid- ing 24-hour access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation for 80% of the urban population by 2020. The grant will come from ADB’s Japan Special Fund, financed by the Government of Japan. The project will support the government’s decentraliza- tion policy and promotion of private sector participation by strengthening the institutional capacity of the Water Supply Authority, the regulatory agency, as well as training provincial water supply com- panies to enable them to oper- ate commercially.
