Are you trying to cut
down on the paper you
use? Is the check you
write to our parish one of
the few checks that you
write anymore? You can
give greener by using our Online Giving Pro-
gram. Simply go to the home page our parish
website at www.stmarygrinnell.com and scroll
down to the bottom of the page. You can set
up the amount that you would like to give on a
schedule that meets your needs and you never
have to worry about writing another check, for-
getting your envelope, or having cash in your
wallet. Our parish greatly appreciates all those
who choose to give in this manner as it helps
us maintain a consistent cash flow and pay all
of our bills in a timely manner.
UNDERSTAND THIS We will make mistakes.
We will always struggle.
But understand this:
Until the moment of your last breath, God
will never give up on you.
Never.
Friends, be confident in Christ's mercy and love.
Collection for those effected by
the ICE Raid in Mt. Pleasant June 2 & 3.
Families directly affected by the immigration raid in Mt.
Pleasant last Wednesday await news regarding their
loved ones who are being detained. They are experienc-
ing pain from the separation and uncertainty of what is to
come next. Bishop Zinkula, Father Connolly and Father
Weir, along with family and friends from St. Alphonsus
and other parishes, expressed concern for those
affected during Mass at St. Alphonsus last Sunday after-
noon. We are one on the journey, and sometimes that
means sharing the pain when brothers and sisters are
hurting. Detaining adults who provide for their families
means that those left to manage in their absence will
soon be in need of financial assistance for rent and other
bills in addition to legal fees for their court cases. Within
24 hours of the raid, $5,000 from diocesan Works of
Charity was given. A special collection will be taken up
on June 2nd and 3rd for those affected by this raid.
Bond Campaign for Mt. Pleasant Workers
Earlier this month, as many of you know, Immigration
and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) arrested 32 men as
part of a raid in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Some of the workers
have been released and returned to their families, but
many do not have the funds to pay for a bond of up to
$10,000. The Eastern Iowa Community Bond Pro-
ject has launched a “ Free Them All ” campaign to raise
funds for the release of every bond-eligible worker de-
tained in the raid. For more information, direct your
browser to www.facebook.com/eicommunitybond.

piece, and measuring 1.5 inches across, this is a
beautiful gift idea for First Communicants, confir-
mands, graduates, fathers or mothers, godparents,

rishioner. Or simply get this beautiful coin for yourself
and use it as a conversation starter at gatherings
with family and friends! The coin is also available in
our parish office. All proceeds will go toward the
paying down the campaign mortgage.

Our parish dedication last Saturday was certainly a day to remember. The weather was beautiful, the liturgy
was inspiring and the celebration was incredible!
Temperance VS Gluttony After having met and become familiar with the Virtues of Patience and Chastity
we now come upon the Virtue of Temperance. From temperance we derive the
words temper and temperature. Of course, if we have a temper we are not
practicing the Virtue of Temperance. And temperature can be cold, mild, or
hot. If we eliminate the extremes we would see that the mild or moderate tem-
perature is an example of Temperance...think, "a temperate climate." One who is practicing the Virtue of Temperance is seen to be practicing voluntary self-restraint in terms of
what a person is doing. Temperance in the form of restraint can be seen in the person who does not seek
retaliation, but who practices non-violence and forgiveness. Restraint from arrogance is seen as humil-
ity and modesty, restraint from excesses such as splurging now in the form of prudence, and restraint from
excessive anger or craving for something in the form of calmness and self-control. Note that excelling in the Virtue of Temperance can help us in attaining some of the other Virtues: Patience,
Humility, and Kindness. Let's hear it for TEMPERANCE!
A Prayer for Temperance
Jesus, You practiced temperance;
you are the Model of self-restraint,
never over-indulging in the temporal.
My body being the Temple of the Lord,
I must treat it with ongoing respect.
Self-abuse destroys the body;
be it alcohol, drugs, or excess food.
Lord Jesus, bestow fortitude upon me
for my soul to control my body,
to practice the virtue of temperance.
Jesus, you are the source of my vigor.
Through You, all is possible!
The Augustine Institute reaches Catholics all over
the world with life-changing talks, books, and films.
Over the years, many have felt called to join their
mission because they have been personally
impacted by a talk they picked up on a kiosk or a
video they watched on FORMED. To see for your-
self, direct your browser to https://formed.org/

SAINT MARY ’ S CATHOLIC CHURCH PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES May 17, 2018
Present: Dennis Crawford, Crystal DeNeve, Brad Donohoe, Brent Flander, Al Frischmeyer, Bill Gruman, John Grennan,
Fr. Ron Hodges, Sharon Mealey, Patsy Probasco, Joel Smith, Charles Willenbring, Jennifer Williams, and Scot Wilson
1. Opening Prayer led by Brent Flander.
2. Old Business Parish Council Elections: Five members of the parish have agreed to run for the three open seats on the Parish Council.
They are Renny Crawford, Brad Donohoe, Jan Phelps, Deb Schulte, and Jennifer Williams. These candidates’ bios will
appear in the bulletin during the weekends of May 26-27 and June 2-3. Voting will happen after masses on June 9-10,
with Saint Mary ’ s trustees to supervise counting of the votes.
AC Installation & Duct Work: Steve Bernemann and Dennis Crawford have inspected the new air conditioning and duct
work in the parish center and found that it needs additional work. Scott German of German Heating & Cooling has said
he will come out and fix the duct work and sheet rock to Saint Mary ’ s specifications.
Hog Raffle: Hog raffle tickets will continue to be sold after Masses. So far, 45 tickets have been sold with 20 tickets re-
maining. Dennis Crawford is looking for volunteers to help with the sales – contact the Parish Office at grin-
nellstmary@diodav.org or 641-236-7486 if you can help. The pigs will arrive early this year ( July 24 ) , so be ready!
3. New Business Parish Council Resignation: Marilyn Parry had to resign from the Parish Council due to a consistent work conflict on
Thursday evenings. By Parish Council bylaws, Charles Willenbring will replace her on the Parish Council based on the
results of the previous Parish Council election. John Grennan was elected to replace Marilyn as Parish Council secre-
tary.
4. Finance Council Report: The Finance Council met on May 17 to discuss five issues. Parish Center Mortgage: The Finance Council passed a motion to convert the church ’ s construction loan with Lincoln
Savings into a mortgage loan with Lincoln Savings. This mortgage loan is for $362,450.19. The loan will be amortized
over fifteen years. The interest rate will be 5% for the first five years and will then be adjusted. The loan maturity period
is ten years and if any balance remains after ten years, the loan will be re-written Some good news: the final amount of
the loan is less than the Finance Committee was expecting. The church will make a quarterly payment of approximately
$8,665 every three months for the next five years. Cleaning and Housekeeping: The Finance Council discussed cleaning and housekeeping arrangements at the church
with members of the Buildings & Grounds Committee. The Finance Council ’ s recommendation to the Parish Council is
that Saint Mary ’ s employ the services of the Quick & Clean cleaning company to come in and clean once a month. The
Parish Council accepted this recommendation without a vote. Quick & Clean will also work with Steve and Jim Collum,
who will continue with their regular work to maintain the church. Steve and Jim report to Jay Deitrich, so all requests re-
garding cleaning should go through Jay in the parish ’ s main office. Quick & Clean will be evaluated after three months
and six months, and the contract would become permanent after six months. Landscaping: The initial bid for landscaping from Earl May in Newton was deemed too expensive. Father Ron has talked
with Mindy Sieck about a cost-sharing program where the church and the state government would split the cost ( 50-
50 ) of planting native Poweshiek County flowers ( N OT PRAIRIE GRASSES ) in front of the church and between the
church and parish center. Father Ron will approach specific donors to see if they would be willing to pay for this land-
scaping. Grinnell College might donate some of the flowers and the Junior Master Gardeners of Grinnell may help with
the planting. Future Purchases for the Church: The Finance Council discussed the possibility of purchasing a hearing loop for the
church. The estimated cost is $4,650. There is no plan to purchase the hearing loop at this time. Parish Council Commission Budgets: The Parish Council commissions must turn in their budgets for the 2019 fiscal year
by June 29. The Finance Committee also welcomed two new members: Digger Phelps and Kaitlin Wilcox.
5. Parish Council Commission Reports & Committee Updates Worship & Spirituality ( Sharon Mealey ) : The Worship & Spirituality Committee met on Thursday, May 10. The icon
commissioned for the church is complete, but a shelf will need to be fashioned before installation. The sealant for the
Mary statue has been passed along to the Buildings & Grounds Committee. Recruitment for the rosary project continues.
The next Worship & Spirituality Committee meeting will be on Thursday, June 14.
Scholarship ( Sharon Mealey ) : The Scholarship Committee met on May 10 and reviewed six applications from gradu-
ating High School students. The committee evaluated each application according to three criteria: ( 1 ) how the appli-
cant has shared his or her time and talent within the parish, ( 2 ) how the applicant applied his or her Catholic values
beyond our church walls, and ( 3 ) The quality and care put forth in completing the application. The committee estab-
lished three different monetary awards for applicants who demonstrated different levels of commitment during their time
as parishioners in high school. The committee determined that all six applicants had demonstrated their commitment to Saint Mary ’ s Church and
Catholic values and each person will receive between $500 and $1,000 ( depending on the award ) to help them pay
college expenses. The Knights of Columbus donated $4,500 to the scholarship fund this year, $4,250 of which will be
distributed to this year ’ s scholarship award winners. The remaining amount will be added to the scholarship fund to be
used in future years. The scholarship recipients will be recognized during the 9 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 27.
Faith Formation ( Crystal DeNeve ) : The Faith Formation Committee organized a successful day of service last month
with the Methodist Church in Grinnell. The Committee will be arranging refreshments for the Graduate Reception hap-
pening after the 9 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 27. The committee is also looking for donated items to sell at the Farmer ’
s Markets in Grinnell and help in setting up for Farmer’ s Market events on Thursdays in Grinnell. Contact Crystal at
grinnellstmaryDRE@diodav.org if you can help.
Social Action ( Scot Wilson ) : The Rice Bowl drive raised $521 for Catholic Relief Services. The committee discussed a
possible fall drive for school supplies as well as plans to contact families in Grinnell facing long-term medical issues to
see if they need help with meals.
Building & Grounds ( Steve Bernemann ) : No updates other than discussion about air conditioning and duct work ( see
above under Old Business) .
Technology Committee ( B ill Gruman ) : A new Technology Committee was formed to help with the new audiovisual
features in the Parish Center. The committee includes Bill Gruman, Lee McPhee, Michael Sims, and Kevin Arnsdorf.
This committee meets every third Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Parish Life ( Charles Willenbring ) : No report
Stewardship ( Jennifer Williams ) : No report
Knights of Columbus ( John Gorman ) : No report
6. Pastor ’ s Report Parish Center Dedication – May 19, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. Mass with Bishop Zinkula, followed by a parish photograph on
the church steps, Mary statue blessing, crucifix blessings, and a final prayer. A reception will follow the dedication. A
group has been convened to handle food ( hors d ’ oeuvres ) , 3rd Degree KCs will handle beverage table ( beer/
wine ) , and 4th Degree KCs will be present for honor guard at Mass. Invitations will be mailed to all parishioners and
selected guests. Approximately 240 people have RSVP ’ d for this dedication ceremony.

nifer Williams.

The Annual Diocesan Appeal is an opportunity for us to be good stewards of God ’ s gifts as
we share with other Catholics our treasure and our blessings and show our love for one
another. The ADA gives us the opportunity to act together as a family of faith and support the
programs and services no single individual or parish can offer by themselves. Your gift is
important. Every gift, regardless of size, is vital to the success of the Appeal.
