Let, r1= Radius of larger pulley r2= Radius of smaller pulley x = Center distance between two

pulleys (i.e. O1 O2)

ANGLE OF CONTACT OR ANGLE OF LAP

In open belt drive, belt will begin to slip on smaller pulley, because angle of lap ( ) is smaller on this pulley compared to larger pulley.

The angle should be taken as minimum angle of contact.

Hence angle of lap or angle of contact ( ) at smaller pulley must be taken into consideration.
