KELVIN CLIPPERS NEWSLETTER
From School to Home - Keeping you Informed
September / October 2017
A message from the principal:
We would like to welcome back all students,
parents and staff to Kelvin High School and the
beginning of another exciting school year. A very
special welcome to all our new students and their
families as well as new staff who joined our
school community.
The school year has started smoothly, with the
usual activity: timetable adjustments, student
assemblies, Club Fair sign-up and our annual
Meet the Teacher Night for grade nine students.
All of these are essential preparations to ensure
that our students have a good beginning and a
successful year of learning.
Kelvin staff is committed to continue offering
outstanding academic programming while
providing many opportunities outside of the
classroom for students to enrich their high school
experience. We believe at Kelvin in the
importance of challenging our students to be the
best that they can be in a safe, stimulating and
supportive environment. We would like to
encourage parents to call us when questions arise
or extra support is needed. When school and
home form a strong partnership, student success
is increased.
This year we are particularly excited and look
forward to building a much-anticipated Active
Living Centre for our students and community.
This project will allow our students to have
greater access to instruction on how to acquire
the skills to an active and healthy lifestyle.
The year 2017-2018 will be filled with countless
learning opportunities for students. We look
forward to working with you all. Have a great
year!
M. Silva

FRENCH
FRENCH
Nous aimerions souhaiter à tous et à toutes une très bonne année scolaire!
The French Department would like to welcome M. Kabanga, Mme Prazeres and Mme
Gouthière to our French Department. We wish Mme Chirila well as she begins her
retirement.
Acceptable Practices for Work Done In Second Language with Internet Resources*
It is always acceptable to consult dictionaries and verb conjugation books such as the
Bescherelle which are accredited sources. In doing so, students must evaluate the
options, with which they are presented, and must then choose the correct word or
phrase for their context.
A translation application such as Babelfish or the language tools on Google produce
ready-made answers which require no evaluation and no intellectual participation on
the part of the student. These sites do not aid student learning.
It is, in a way, asking “someone” to do the work for the student as if he or she had
asked a friend or a parent to do the assignment. The student is, therefore submitting
work that is not his or her own which is considered plagiarism. In addition, these tools
only provide a literal word for word translation which is often incorrect or illogical.
Students who make use of these tools are not displaying academic honesty.
In consultation with Dr. Kenneth Meadwell of the University of Winnipeg

Festival Théâtre Jeunesse
Auditions and rehearsals for the French Youth Theatre Festival will take place early
March. Please see Mme Cox in room 44 or Mme Gouthière to participate.
EDITING HOMEWORK
We would like to point out a couple of very useful websites for helping students edit
their work in French: http://bonpatron.com and reverse.net-dictionaries.
These sites allow students to put their work through a grammar and spell check in
French. The editor will point out the error and explain the grammatical concept
related to it. The wordreference.com and lexilogos.com dictionary sites are also
useful.
Students are also welcome to ask their teacher for help.
French Immersion Oral Proficiency
École secondaire Kelvin High School is pleased to continue our initiative to encourage
our Immersion students in their efforts to become fluent en français. The entire
Immersion team is working together to support our language learners. Oral activities are
offered during Immersion classes to enhance oral literacy.
On November 1st, our grade 10 students will have an interview session with two
Immersion teachers which will consist of reading a passage followed by a discussion.
In class, students will receive text options, schedule and the assessment criteria. Students
will read the text of their choice and then discuss the topic with two teachers. This
assessment does not affect the students grades, but is a tool to guide their learning over
the next couple years at Kelvin.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Leanne Chase at
lchase@wsd1.org or Myriam Gouthière at mgouthiere@wsd1.org for clarification.
FRENCH IMMERSION
All the grade 10 French Immersion students are going to Gaillardise à la Brise
on September 27th in LaBroquerie, Manitoba
Gaillardise à la Brise is the largest gathering of French-speaking youth in all of Manitoba
and Western Canada. The event gives the opportunity to high school students to live
their “francophonie” outside of a school context while creating new friendships with
other students who share their passion for French and their pride of being francophone.
Students will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of workshops in the
morning and they will be entertained by top new bands in the afternoon.
It should be a spectacular day for all! Permission slips and fees are due September 15.
Lunch is included. The bus departs from Kelvin at 8:30 AM and returns between 4:30
and 4:45 PM.
Please contact Mme Chase at 204-474-1492 or at lchase@wsd1.org if you have any
questions.
Festival du voyageur à l’École secondaire Kelvin
We will celebrate the joie de vivre des Voyageurs and the rich contributions of our
Metis and Indigenous peoples during the time of the fur trade in Manitoba. Please see
Mme Chase in room 45 to get involved.

SAT TEST
The SAT is a three hour test that measures verbal and mathematical reasoning skills students
have developed over time and skills they need for college. Many colleges and universities,
especially in the United States, use the SAT as one indicator among others of a student’s
readiness to do college-level work.
The SAT can be written at the University of Manitoba throughout the year beginning in early
October. Register on-line at www.collegeboard.com or see your guidance counsellor for more
information.

LIBRARY
OCTOBER IS CANADIAN LIBRARY MONTH!
Canada’s libraries make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and in our
communities. They help to inspire Canadians to celebrate our culture, to advance
universal and equitable access to information, to support lifelong learning and to
document and preserve our heritage for generations to come. In October, the
inspiration created in and by libraries will be celebrated during Canadian Library
Month.
With more than 19,000 books (both fiction and non-fiction), subscriptions to several
periodicals and newspapers, and an impressive collection of multimedia items, Kelvin
High School’s Library supports the teaching needs of staff and the curricular needs of an
increasingly diverse student population. The Library’s entire collection, as well as the
magazine article database, EBSCOhost, is searchable on line, providing a local “on-
ramp” to the Information Highway. Make a virtual visit to Kelvin’s Library at https://
www.winnipegsd.ca/schools/Kelvin/StudentResources/khslibrary/Pages/default.aspx.
Nearly 97% of all Canadians live in a community served by a public library; Kelvin is
within walking distance of two Winnipeg Public Library branches: the Cornish Library
(one of two historic Carnegie Libraries in Winnipeg), located just over the Maryland
Bridge, and the River Heights Branch, adjacent to Brock Corydon School, on Corydon.
Visit the Winnipeg Public Library at http://wpl.city.winnipeg.mb.ca/library.
In celebration of both Manitoba School Library Day and National School
Library Day, Kelvin High School will be Monday, October 23, 2017.

SCIENCE
Summer Research in Wapusk National Park
This summer, Kelvin students continued the tradition of making their way up to
Churchill and from there taking a helicopter out to Wapusk National Park to study the
permafrost layer, vegetation and arctic
foxes. The students worked hard and
learned the names of each lichen and moss
species. By the end of the trip they felt a
deep love for the tundra and felt
connected to this place of peace and
stillness. The highlights of the trip were the
friendships that were made with the
s t u d e n t s f r o m C h u r c h i l l a n d
B a l t i m o r e , t h e s a t i s f a c t i o n o f
working hard on the research, the extra
helicopter rides to explore the tundra, and the encounter with the energetic fox pups.
See Ms. Labun or Ms. Temesvari for information on the Summer Tundra and Fall Polar
Bear Trips. Applications are due by the end of January for both trips.
SCIENCE
Summer Research in Wapusk National Park - Continued
Here are a few quotes from the students:
After this trip, I now want to incorporate some aspect of research and development
into my future career. Not just doing research in the field, but analyzing data and
drawing conclusions to make better hypotheses and predictions to increase the
effectiveness of the study is very appealing to me.
Never have I ever seen a group of students that had barely known each other before
meeting each other become so involved in each other’s lives and become so connected
with the entire group, which truthfully made the 2017 Summer Churchill trip one of the
best trips of my life.
And one of the most important things to me that happened was meeting all these
amazing people; each and every one of them taught me something, they were always
there to help and were so kind, they are some of the best people I have ever met.
Just being out there and seeing what an amazing and beautiful place it is helps
understanding why we need to protect it.
Additionally, it was astonishing to see how much we grew as scientists, each day
improving on plant species identification and being more efficient in our data
collection.
As an inquisitive student who wants to pursue a career in environmental science, this
experience left me speechless. Being one of the few who have had the rare opportunity
to contribute to something as important as arctic research while still in high school puts
into perspective just how lucky I am.
ISAMR has further showed me that a career in environmental science is what I want to
strive for. I cannot express just how grateful I am that I became a part of something
remarkable.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The Social Studies Department would like to welcome all new and returning students
for this coming year.
Over the course of the year, the social studies teachers will continue to lead a number
of field trips. These opportunities will help to broaden the classroom experience by
allowing students to expand their learning in their own communities. Grade nine Social
Studies classes will visit the Provincial Legislature and grade twelve Law classes will sit
through a trial at the Provincial Court House. Many of the grade eleven Canadian
History classes will participate in a historic walking tour of downtown Winnipeg and
Saint Boniface. We also plan to take our classes to the Canadian Museum for Human
Rights as well as the Manitoba Museum. As part of the Social Studies Indigenous Issues
Speakers’ Series, our students will also have the opportunity to listen and to ask
questions to several guest speakers who will discuss topical First Nations issues in our
city, province and country. For example, on September 29th (Orange Shirt Day), Fort
Rouge MLA Wab Kinew, the son of a residential school survivor, will speak to our
students about the legacy of residential schools.
Lastly, the Department will be hosting teacher candidates from the University of
Manitoba and Saint Boniface universities this fall. The expectation for students who will
be having a teacher candidate in their room will be the same as it is for their regular
teacher. Students are reminded to keep up to date with their work and to continue to
attend all their classes.
We are looking forward to another year with the students and parents at our great
school!

KELVIN ACTIVE LIVING CENTRE
UPDATE
The Kelvin community was disappointed to learn this spring that the anticipated
gymnasium with an incorporated active living centre was not going ahead as planned.
However, we have been working throughout the summer and are pleased to announce
that we are moving ahead with a revised plan to build an Active Living Centre (ALC) at
École secondaire Kelvin High School.
The drawing below provides a good idea of the appearance and placement of the new
ALC. The entrance lobby will include an elevator and will be connected to the old
building to provide access to all three levels in the school. The elevator will be funded
by the province.
The interior will include cardio and strength-building areas; a wall of windows will
provide natural light to the space. We hope to build a facility with 2400 square feet of
usable space.
We are currently about $175,000 short of our fundraising goal. These funds must be
committed PRIOR to going to tender. Our Fundraising Committee is actively pursuing
additional donors and we hope to finalize commitments soon. However, if you or
others you know have been waiting to make a commitment (regardless of size), please
contact the school NOW to let us know your plans so we can maximize the size of the
facility. We expect construction to start in 2017.
Further information is available from Kelvin:
Phone: 204-474-1492 Email: kelvin@wsd1.org
We would like to keep you informed of progress on the Active Living Centre and have
set up a mailing list (managed by the school to ensure privacy) to do so. Your email
address may be sent to Carol Bright at cbright@wsd1.org.

Dear Parents/Guardians of Kelvin students:
PARTICIPATE...
On behalf of Kelvin High School’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC), you are cordially

Winnipeg School Division.
Each meeting includes a report from the Administration to help keep us informed of
what is happening in the school and why some administrative decisions are made. The
Student Council also attends and reports on activities of their Council in addition to
South District Advisory and French Immersion Advisory committee reports.

Thursday of the
month):
October 12, 2017 November 9, 2017 December 7, 2017
January 11, 2018 March 8, 2018 April 12, 2018

We encourage your attendance and participation.
Please join us for the first meeting of the season in the School Library (main floor, just

WE ARE LOOKING FOR KELVIN PEER TUTORS !
We are looking for any Grade 10, 11 or 12 students who would like to be part of our team. Not
only will you be helping your fellow student, but you will be helping yourself, since your
leadership and networking skills will be honed, and knowledge, cemented. Tutoring also fulfills
course requisites, including CAS hours (I.B.) and Volunteer credit/Community service hours.
Furthermore, the experience gained will serve you very well in the future: employers will see
you as a motivated, capable individual, while universities will look for this type of experience
on scholarship applications.
Tutoring can take place when it is convenient for you: during the lunch hour, before or after
school, or during a spare. Support is needed in virtually all subject areas, especially Math and
Sciences, and programs (English track, I.B., and French Immersion).
WOULD YOU LIKE SOME HELP WITH SCHOOL WORK?
PEER TUTORING MAY BE THE ANSWER FOR YOU!
You will be paired up with another student who will be happy to share their knowledge and
experience in the subject(s) that are a challenge to you. Tutoring can take place at lunch, before
or after school, or possibly during your spare. It can take place on a regular or semi-regular basis
(often 1–3 times per week).
All you need to do is swing by room 23 to pick up and fill out an application.
Seize the day and take charge of your own learning!
UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC AWARDS CEREMONY
Each autumn, Kelvin High School honours its undergraduate students who have demonstrated
academic excellence in the previous school year. We cordially invite award winners and their
families to join us in honouring their academic achievement at this year’s Academic Awards
Ceremony, which will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at 7:00 p.m.
All award winners will be receiving a letter in the mail. Students who would like to attend the
ceremony are required to confirm their attendance by Friday, October 13, by returning the
bottom portion of their letter to the office.
Students who wish to have their award presented to them at the ceremony are required to be at
the school by 6:30 pm, in order to receive their stage cards and line up for their entrance.
Students who are attending are expected to stay until the end of the ceremony, when all of the
awards have been presented.
If your son or daughter is unable to attend the evening or unable to stay for the duration of the
ceremony, the awards will be available for pick up in the office the next day.
Congratulations to all award winners and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday,
October 18, 2017!
Bicycles at the School
Although bike racks are available on school
grounds, parents and students are reminded
that it is the students’ responsibility to provide
their own locks. Please be advised that we
have had a number of incidences where cable
locks have been cut. The school is not
responsible for any thefts. Students who do
bring bikes to school do so at their own risk.
Due to increased concerns with students having
adverse reactions to scented products, Kelvin
High School is taking steps to becoming a scent
free school. We are asking for the support of
students, staff and parents. We are asking all
those attending Kelvin to avoid wearing scented
products such as perfume, men's cologne,
scented hairspray or lotions, strong smelling
soaps, etc. Your support would be greatly
appreciated.
Valuables in the School
Students are being cautioned not to bring
valuables to school (ie: iPod, MP3 players), unless
it is a course requirement (such as a scientific
calculator). Kelvin will not assume responsibility
for any “lost” items.
CLIPPER TIPS
Please be reminded that the school’s parking
lot is specifically assigned to, and paid for by,
school staff only and therefore, we are
requesting that you refrain from using it as a
drive-thru by making arrangements to drop
off or meet your son/daughter on one of the
surrounding streets.
Kelvin does not have visitor parking

Smoking by students, employees of the Division, and
any persons shall be prohibited in Division buildings,
Division-owned vehicles and on school property”
Kelvin High School Code of Conduct
Kelvin High School has adopted a “Clipper Code
of Conduct for Student Athletes”. Kelvin
believes that participating in athletics is a
privilege. Student athletes are ambassadors of
our school. The image presented by our student
athletes will be of a positive nature, enhancing
the reputation of Kelvin inside and outside the
community.
To achieve this the “Code of Conduct” will be a
guide for our student athletes. The code will
reflect personal behavior, attitude, courtesy,
academics, sportsmanship and general
commitment. Student athletes who do not
adhere to these considerations will be referred to
an Athletic Review Committee and appropriate
action will be taken to rectify the situation.
Kelvin has an answering service from 4:30 PM to 8:00 AM. Messages can be left by calling
474-1492 and re-entering the same phone number when prompted.
Messages can be left for any staff member.
The Guidance/Student Office has a direct line during office hours
(8:00 am—4:00 pm). The phone number is 474-1156. Calls to all counselors should be dialed
