National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia
LADO , an archaic Slavic word, is a synonym for good, kind and nice, and is frequently used as a refrain
in ancient ritual songs of north-western Croatia.
LADO, the National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia, was founded in 1949 in Zagreb as a
professional national ensemble, with the aim of researching, artistically interpreting and
presenting on stage the most beautiful examples of the rich traditions of Croatian music and dance.
The ensemble's brilliant dancers, who are also excellent singers, can easily transform this folk dance
ensemble into an impressive folk choir, while its 14 superb musicians play some fifty different
traditional and classical instruments.
In its repertoire, which consists of more than a hundred different choreographies and several hundred
vocal, instrumental and vocal-instrumental numbers, LADO represents the rich and diverse
regional musical and choreographic traditions of Croatia, which is geographically situated at a
crossroad of Europe in which the Mediterranean, Balkan, Pannonian and Alpine influences are
found in the dances, music and costumes.
LADO is often called a "Dancing Museum" because of the priceless and beautiful authentic national
costumes (more than 1,200 costumes) it has in its collection , some of which are 100 years old.
The ensemble also presents new, contemporary musical and choreographic works based on
traditional motifs and elements.
In more than the half-century of its existence, LADO has travelled throughout the entire world, to all
six continents, and performed on the largest and most prestigious international stages and concert
venues - from the Royal Albert Hall in London to the City Center in New York; from the impressive
Sorbonne Grand Amphitheatre in Paris and the Palais des Beaux Arts in Bruxelles, to the Mann
Auditorium in Tel Aviv; from the Konzerthaus in Vienna and the Konserthus in Oslo to the Opera
Houses in Cairo, Budapest and Kyiv from the Perth Concert Hall and Sydney Town Hall in Australia to
the Kyoto Kaikan Daiichi Hall and the Nakano Sun Plaza Hall in Tokyo.
The responses of audiences and prominent figures in the worlds of culture, art and politics, as well as
from professional critics, have consistently been ones of delight and unqualified recognition, ranking
LADO as one of the finest professional folk ensembles in the world.

LADO AROUND THE WORLD
REVIEWS AND AUDIENCE ACCLAIM
AUDIENCE REACTION - Japan, October/ November 2006
“... If I was born again, I would like to be born a Croat, so I could dance these beautiful dances with
LADO.”
THE NEW YORK TIMES - NEW YORK
“LADO, the Folk Dance Ensemble, began its visit in the City Centre. There is nothing more
moving. An image of pure style and class is presented here.”
LA BOURSE EGYPTIENNE – CAIRO
“Their lavish costumes, dances and songs, display an amazing unity and perfect discipline. Fast
paced rhythms are executed with mind boggling precision and skill. The ensemble manages to
perform dances from various regions of Croatia with such expertise, so that practically every show
in itself is a small masterpiece.”
IL CITTADINO - GENOVA
“In this time of confusion and lack of spontaneity, a message of pure serenity and an instinctive
longing for simple tradition is a life saving element. A passion and attachment to historic
traditions, passed on from one generation to the next, exudes from the artistry of the Zagreb
ensemble, which makes it one of the best folklore groups in the world.”
DZENNIK LODZKIE - LODZ
“LADO effortlessly continues the purest source of national artistry. Wherever this ensemble may
show up, it carries along with it artistic triumph.”
PRAVDA UKRAINE - KIEV
“This is a superb group, distinctive for its performing culture. Characteristically, every dance is
accompanied by singing, where one sees that the performers are not only amazing dancers, but
amazing singers as well.”
AFTONBLADET - STOCKHOLM
“It has been a long time since Stockholm has seen such a theatre performance. Boundless amounts
of colour, rhythm and delight are graciously offered to the audience.”
EL MERCURIO - VALPARAISO
“Not one person left the theatre without saying a word of praise for this wonderful performance,
expression of culture, great taste and temperament; such a unique performance presented simply
and powerfully.”
LA SEGUNDA - SANTIAGO
“LADO dancers bring along a sense of wind from the mountains and scents of the valleys.”
SOVJETSKA KULTURA - MOSKVA
“LADO's concert presents a symphony of movement and sound.”
TOUTE LA DANSE - PARIS
“Their amazing energy most likely stems from practice; but their stature, work and beautiful
presence comes out of their love of dance, and the pleasure experienced by dancing together.”
WESTFALEN BLATT – BIELEFELD
“It was so brilliant, that something more brilliant cannot be imagined.”
PRODUCTION
As well as holding concert performances, LADO has recorded
a large number of CDs, documentaries and musical films,
and has participated in many theatre productions.
