JEAN PIAGET

Jean Piaget• Swiss psychologist• concentrated on children• before him, how was child’s

thinking viewed?• Children progressed through

stages

Piaget• IQ tests- similar problems• CHILDREN THINK

DIFFERENTLY THAN ADULTS• NOT little adults• different both quantitative and

qualitative

PIAGET• SCHEMA- “files” that we use to

organize our worlds• use all senses to make/add to

these files• more and more complex• especially the mouth

PIAGET• Assimilation: adding to an

existing schema• dogs/ fast food• Accommodation: modifies an old

schema for more things• both are used constantly

PIAGET• 1. Sensorimotor Stage- (birth

-2 years) thought displayed in action

• behavior consists of simple motor responses to sensory stimuli (the reflexes)

PIAGET• does not “look” for things• Object permanence• will gain the concept of “self”• rouge experiment• Separation anxiety

To Be Mastered...• Object permanence- when it

is out of sight, it exists• Mental Representation-

being able to “picture” something in your mind

PIAGET• Preoperational Stage: (2-6/7

years) develop. of language• the child lacks operations,

which are reversible mental processes

• does a brother have a brother?

PIAGET• use of models and maps not

done- Symbolic Representation

• EGOCENTRIC

PIAGET• Not able to see other points of

view. Only their own• Talking on phone• 3. Concrete Operational: (~7-11-

12 years) • manipulation of objects

PIAGET• Can organize their thoughts• only think about physical objects-

no abstracts!• No more egocentrism!• LOVE to categorize, rank, order,

separate, differentiate

PIAGET• Principle of conservation• if appearance changes, doesn’t

mean the object has changed• numbers, substance, area,

volume

PIAGET• 4. Formal Operational ( 11 +)• abstract reasoning/morals• higher order learning• evaluation, analysis, assessment/

scientific method• some never reach this stage!

PIAGET• Contrary to facts• “What if snow were black?”
