Veterans with Dogs

VETERANS WITH DOGS provides Assistance Dogs and training for Veterans suffering with invisible injuries, from trauma related to service.

The aim of the charity:

To improve quality of life for Veterans through the companionship of dogs by providing training, education and support services for Assistance Dogs and companion animals.

• Unrequited love and companionship• Motivation, structure and routine• Removing loneliness and isolation• Building trust and consistency• Social interaction and Veteran support• Fun

By working with individuals and their dogs training them together to provide the help needed to cope with daily life. The dogs are trained to recognise when their owners are experiencing stress by, for instance, putting on the light if a nightmare occurs, getting veterans up and out of bed in the mornings, insisting that the owners follow a morning routine by fetching medication, opening doors cupboards etc. Breaking the “stress cycle” by following signals eg: leading the veteran away from difficult situations and giving structure and purpose to lives that have previously been

Please help us with our training. If you see the dogs wearing their jackets please do not make a fuss of them as this distracts them from doing valuable work and causes distress for their handlers.

Fundraising is an ongoing mission for us and we are always grateful for volunteers and fundraisers. We will be having a stand at the Hannahs PAWS Dog Show on 13th June where we will be happy to explain more. We also sell dog toys, dog treats, training aids etc. at competitive prices and original watercolour paintings of pets so please ask for details. (Our office is Upper East 121). We will also be at Armed Forces Day in Plymouth on 27th June.

One of our volunteers Rosemary is also doing a 15,000ft skydive on 8th July and would be most grateful for any offers of sponsorship from tenants, friends and contacts of those based at Seale-Hayne.

EarFilmsEarFilms is a storytelling experience like no other. Place on a blindfold, sit in a 3D sphere of speakers and lose yourself in a lifelike, vivid story for your ears and your imagination. Founder Daniel Marcus Clark and his colleague Chris Timpson are always open to talk to people about sound and discuss collaborations around the use of sound and storytelling for entertainment, education and therapy. They have recently set up a small ambisonic surround sound rig and creative workspace which will allow them to continue concepting and experimenting with sonic storytelling.

They have just returned from the US where they had a week residency at ArtShare in LA and then a one week residency at the University of California in Davis. Their work in the US included a combination of performances and workshops as well as a collaboration with neuroscientists and acousticians at Davis. This was their largest show to date with 180 people collectively wearing blindfolds and exercising their imaginations together!

The Moveable Feast Workshop CompanyRun by Tony Gee, The Moveable Feast guides people, using a wide range of creative processes and media, to produce their own spectacular events. Tony has worked as a freelance artist for thirty years touring nationally and internationally.

It has been a very busy year so far with four big shows in Primary Schools in London and Zurich, a day for Devon Guild of Craftsman at Seale-Hayne, a hands-on day for artists who run workshops, a day on creativity with lots of artists running workshops in different art forms at Exeter University for nearly 200 PGCE students.

Over the next few months Tony and his team will be working on projects in Dorset, Norwich, Bristol and Saskatchewan, Canada.

Rob HillsResident blacksmith Rob has completed the staircase he has been working on for 14 months. This was a private commission for a lady building her dream home which was ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Harry Potter’ influenced. The brief was to create a twisted dark looking vine to grow up and around the stairs and gallery above. Rob added a slight ‘art nouveau’ influence as it perfectly complimented the brief.

Interesting facts - All the metal weighs in at two tons. One ton of coke was used in the forging process, along with twelve 47kg bottles of propane and fifteen large bottles of oxygen.

Counselling for CarersDavid Humeniuk, Development Officer for Counselling for Carers, manages a team of 50+ volunteer counsellors working throughout Devon with carers aged 18+. The organisation also runs a programme of therapeutically focused workshops on a range of themes relating to the caring role and has recently launched its own website www.c4cdevon.org.uk.

The Farm-Able ProjectThe Farm-Able Project is a not for profit Social Enterprise run by a group of experienced professionals whose lives have been affected by a loved one’s trauma. They help people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder using therapeutic work in the countryside as an aid to recovery.

They recently organised two experience days on Dartmoor including the rural art of Dry Stone Walling run by a local craftsman. Accompanied by staff and volunteers, the group consisted of all ages and armed forces backgrounds and they learnt new skills and forged new friendships.

Gail BryantGail is a weaver and a member of HANDS. In May she has a piece being exhibited at Exeter University. She is taking part in an exhibition in the Centre for ALternative MAterials and REmanufacturing Technologies (CALMARE) as part of University of Exeter Arts and Culture, a programme of public events. ‘From Cowboys to Astronauts’ is an art from waste exhibition promoting the concept of a circular economy – a regenerative economic system where materials and energy from products are recovered and put back into the system instead of simply being disposed of.

Cycle Systems AcademyStaff NewsSean Lally will be taking part in Prudential Ride London in August alongside Simon Curtis from Reach and Abi Cozens from Health & Wellbeing. Sean will also be entering The Dartmoor Classic in June.

CoursesThe Residential Courses are proving really successful and students are loving the environment and atmosphere of Seale-Hayne.

Campagnolo Pro Shop and EPS courses will be running this year and courses for Hannahs guests will start this year from basic through to professional level.
