• Hailstorm = storm consisting of hail

• Hail = type of precipitation, balls of ice, type of snow

• Hailstone = individual falling hail

How are hailstorms produced?• From

thunderstorms• Stronger updraft =

larger hail• Go through areas

of different temp. and humidity = different types of ice build onto them

• Stones grow in same cloud

Where and When?• Common in mid-latitudes• Can happen anywhere in

U.S. mostly SE. Wyoming, W. Nebraska, & E. Colorado

• Around the world: Argentina, N. Italy, Kenya, S. Africa, Caucasus Region

• Localized events• Spring, summer, fall

Hailstone Sizes• Mostly smaller than

What damage can they cause?• Damage = greater

with stronger winds• Severe

thunderstorm warning you, homes, property, pets

• Vehicles, windows, roofs, dent airplanes

How do they relate to severe weather?

• Hailstones fall at at least 22 mph, can fall to 100 mph

• Hail = most destructive form of precipitation

• 1888 storm killed 250 people
