(Geo)technology 2008: Findability, Accessibility, Portability

Plan of Attack

Findability, Accessibility and Portability

Geo and non-geo examples of ways to do some these

What can we learn from all this?

Web of Data (and Services)

Data sources and services are the center of the Web (Facebook, Amazon, Flickr, Twitter, dopplr, etc.), not pages

The world makes the data (some exceptions)

The developers make the data open via standards, APIs, badges, widgets... (some exceptions)

Findable?Findability refers to the quality of being locatable or navigable. At the item level, we can evaluate to what degree a particular object is easy to discover or locate.

What Makes Something Findable?

What it is/contains/links to or is associated with/availability to be searched

The tool used to find it

Accessible? The "ability to access" the functionality, and possible benefit, of some system or entity.

Accessible?Flickr pictures? - license, API and built in tools for external use

MySpace information? - API to build on MySpace

LinkedIn profiles? - API to build on LinkedIn

Last.fm songs? - license, API

Intentional or unintentional mechanisms for restricting access to or re-use of data

restriction of robots to websites, with preference to certain search engines

compilation in databases or websites to which only registered members or customers can have accessuse of a proprietary or closed technology or encryption which creates a barrier for access.copyright/license/patent

Portable?Data Portability is the option to use your personal data between trusted applications and vendors.

Portable?Flickr pictures?

Different Approaches

Data Portability - the option to use your personal data between trusted applications and vendors (http://www.dataportability.org/)

Data Availability - MySpace offers this with partners: Yahoo!, eBay, Photobucket, and Twitter, no storage, just appears when “called,” actual data is not stored or useable

OpenSocial/Friend Connect - a set of common APIs for building social applications across many websites, build one social app, run on many platforms

Addressing Geodata Findability/Accessibility

ArcGIS Server -> data searchable by Google

ArcGIS Server -> useable as KML stream in Google/other mapping apps

Google geographic search -> now in search API

Future...

Geodata will become part of our (social/business) profiles

Geodata/services providers will enable findability, accessibility, and portability

Advanced search tools for data

New roles for specialized geodata search sites
