Our Community Partners

After finding out that we all had the same passion for animals we chose to work with the Humane Society of South Coast Dartmouth as our community partner.

Reaching Home-school Group

Created proposal for home-school group

Contacted forum of parent to engage in our project

Very interested parents, however slow response time

Decided as a group to find another group to work with due to time constraints.

After having a minor set back with the Home-school group we chose to work with Kiddie Kampus.

Looked into getting assistance from the children to build our float and also collect donations for Humane Society.

Project Ideology

Float Concept Design

Originally wanted to use paper mache and recycled boxes to build a dog house.

Instead, we collaborated with Kiddie Kampus and came up with the idea of using milk jugs to build a dog house and cardboard to build the roof. We used toilet paper and paper towel rolls to make a fence.

Volunteering At Humane Society

As part of our project we chose to volunteer 15 hours of our time to show we support their cause.

Earth Day Lesson Plan

Created lesson plans and coloring pages for the children

Lessons were taught to two separate groups of childrenfrom age 3-14.

Conveyed the importance of recycling and how it relates to Earth Day.

Reaching out to the Parents

Created memo that was sent out to parents in order to collect recyclable materials that are found at their homes.

We also asked children to bring in any gallon milk jugs, toilet paper and paper towel rolls as this would be used for the creation of the float

Float Beginnings

Large response and cooperation from parents and Kiddie Kampus helped us gather all materials needed for the float in a very quick manner.

Children were asked to fully participate in the design and building of the float.

Painting,,,, gluing,,,, cutting…. Bending..

Destruction

Three weeks in to the float and it was just about finished when…

Restructuring of Float

Old materials became useless for our float

Had to buy new materials to finish float quickly.

Design and structure was never the same.

Invitations Parade was getting close we decided it best to notify the parents and invite the children to take part in the Earth Eve Parade.

Memo also asked for donations that we were collecting to give to the Humane Society

A wish list was attached with emphasis on anything that could be reused.

Towels.. Blankets… toys… dishes ….

• Last minute adjustments to float

• Rented a Uhaul .. Minor mishap .. Re-route .

• Picking up float in pieces

• Putting together in the back of the Uhaul while raining.

• Lost GPS signal and couldn’t find parade location.

Parade Preparation

Getting Through It All …Realization that the float was a bit heavier than expected.

Members of other groups helped carry the float as we struggled to make it to the end.

Mobility seemed to an issue…

Disposal of float

Lessons Learned Kids can be persistently helpful even when help

is not needed.

Work can done at a much faster pace even if there is just one extra person helping you.

Functioning as a productive team was needed in order to complete our project.

Teams are defined as who is willing to help rather than who was assigned to a specific group.
