Nagui Achamallah was born in Alexandria, Egypt.His interest in paintingdeveloped in college.While atmedical school, he enrolled himself in an independentfineartsprogramattheUniversityofAlexandriaAtelier.Asastudent,heparticipatedinnumerous university group shows and won several collegiate awards.Nagui had hisfirstshowattheUniversityPhysiciansClubin1973,followedbyanotherattheCentreCulturelFrancaisinAlexandriain1975.HeimmigratedtoCaliforniain1981,wherehecurrently resides and practices psychiatry in the San Francisco Bay area.AlthoughNagui has a full-timemedical practice, he manages to createmore than twenty-fivepaintings each year. He prefers to paint with oils. His painting style is unique andintricate, causing him to spend tremendous amounts of time and effort on eachpiece.Althoughhecontinuedtopaintallalong,hedidnotstartshowinghisworkagainuntil 1996.Over the years, he has participated inmany group shows and a few soloshowsinCalifornia.Nagui'sstylehasevolvedoverthelast40years.ItreflectsEgyptian,Middle Eastern and South Mediterranean influences.Many of his paintings depicthumanfigures.Naguisayshis“charactersarecaptivesoftime,instincts,fearsandthereasonsoftheirexistence.”
ZarmineAghazarian,borninYerevan,Armenia,developedherinterestinartatanearlyage.ShemovedtoAmericain1970andlivesinOrindawithherfamily.Withno formaleducation inart,Zarminehas developed herownstyle through severalartclassesthatshetookatlocalcommunitycolleges.Shestartedfocusingonpaintingonlyaftersheretiredfromherjob in2001.Herinspirationcomesfromherfamily,travels,environment,andthepeopleshehasmetinherlife.Beinganaturallyreservedperson,Zarmineusesartashermediumofexpression.Whenanimageorideacomestomind,itremains thereuntil shecansketchorpaint it.However,oncetheprocessgetsstarted,sheallows the image toevolveperher aesthetic interestsand influences.She isofteninspiredbycolorsandvibrancy in theart-makingofherArmenianheritage.Zarmineenjoys experimenting with different medias: watercolor, mixed media and acrylics.Thevibrant energy ofcolor and brush stroke is a common thread throughout all herpaintings,whichsheachievesbyapplyingmultiplelayersofhueswithdifferinglevelsofsaturation.Often, she includes layers of mixed media such as handmade papers andnewspaper.Zarminebelieveseachpaintinghasits storyandcharacter,andsheenjoysthe processof searching forbalance betweencolor, texture, compositionandcontext.Many of Zarmine’s paintings have captured the beauty of human figures, depicted insoftandfluidmotion.
BhavnaMisrahasbeenpaintingsinceshewasalittlegirl.Shegrewupinthebeautiful region of Himachal in India. Being surrounded by tall pine trees, snowymountains,lushvalleys,clear-waterlakes,anddiversewildlifehadalastingimpactonher artistic endeavors. Her passion for art was further reinforced by continuedencouragementfromherparents.Sheneverdoubtedthatshe’dbeapainteroneday!AsshegraduatedwithaMSdegreeinElectricalEngineeringfromSJSU,Bhavnacontinuedtopaintontheside.Inhermindscienceandartwereneverseparate-“Scienceistheartofaccuracy,and the techniqueof art is certainlya scienceof creativity,”andshewasequallygoodatboth.Bhavnasayssheappliestheknowledgeoflightanditseffecttoallher pieces. She routinely tries to explore ways to break down the entire process ofpainting and colormixing just like solving algorithms and theorems.Bhavna believesthatnotstudyingartformallygaveherachancetodevelopherownstyle,andtoliveinthespiritofa lifelongstudent. She learnseverydaybypracticingandexperimenting.Bhavnahasaspecialinterestindoingportraits.Shefeelsthataportraitbondstheartistandthesubjectinawaysuchastogiveasenseofownershiptoboth.Abouteightyearsago, Bhavna quit her 9 to 5 job, and returned to doing art full time. She has beendisplayingherworkever sinceatvariousexhibitions.She is anart contractor for theAlamedaCountyLibrarySystem,andsheownsandoperatesBhavnaMisraArtStudio.BhavnaisalsoprofessionallyaffiliatedwithFremontArtAssociation.

Olive Hyde Art Guild CALL FOR ARTISTS MEMBERS JURIED SHOW June 30 through July 29, 2017 The Olive Hyde Art Guild is soliciting artists for its Members Juried Show that will run June 30 through July 29, 2017, at the Gallery. This show takes place every other year and is an exhibition of two and three-dimensional art held in Mission San Jose at the Olive Hyde Art Gallery, 123 Washington Boulevard, Fremont, CA. Submitted work may be in painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic), mixed media, photography, digital media (no video), ceramics, glass, sculpture, jewelry, fiber art, or works on paper. Judging for selection into the show will be done by a juror from digital images only. Awards will be decided by a juror from the actual artwork prior to the show opening. Deadline for entering is Monday, May 22, 2017. The Juror for the 2017 Show is Cathy Kimball, Executive Director at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. Three monetary prizes will be awarded: Best of Show - $200; 2 nd Place - $150; and 3 rd Place - $100. Merit Award winners will receive ribbons, and a Peoples’ Choice ribbon will be voted by attendees at the Opening Night Reception Friday, June 30, 2017.
