Our planet and millions of people are exploited to give us the clothes we buy. But it doesn’t have to be this way. When you buy from brands with good grades, you’re supporting fair working conditions and care for the planet.
This Guide is a practical tool you can use to reduce worker exploitation and alleviate poverty in developing countries where clothes are manufactured. It grades brands on ethical practices in their supply chains, giving you the power to shop ethically and connect with the people who make your clothes.

How the Guide worksInside this Guide, you’ll see a list of brands and their grades. For this research, 130 companies representing 480 brands, have been assessed. A-F grades are awarded to companies as a measure of their efforts to address worker exploitation in their supply chains. Each company is assessed on how it performs in five areas (you can see these represented in the illustration over the
page). These areas are assessed at three different stages of the company’s supply chain:
• Raw materials: Farm level – for example, cotton farms
• Inputs production: The production of fabric, leather and other products
• Final stage production: Factories that sew clothes together for distribution
The final grade is an average of how the company performs in all three areas and covers a 5% range. Therefore the circle device of two B+ graded brands may look different as each grade represents a range of percentage points.
What does the * mean?You also will notice that some brands have an * next to their name. This means that, despite our best efforts, the company which owns that brand has chosen not to participate in our research. When this happens, we go ahead and assess the company on publicly available information. We do this because, if companies do not disclose, or are unwilling to disclose, what they are doing to ensure that people or the planet are not exploited in their supply chains, it becomes almost impossible for consumers and the public to know if they are investing sufficiently to mitigate these risks.
We do acknowledge that many of the non-responsive companies may be doing more to improve their ethical sourcing than we have been able to assess them on.
Policies (10%)In this area we check whether companies have a code of conduct, what it includes and how much of the supply chain it is applied to.
Traceability & Transparency (25%)In this area we check how much of its supply chain a company has traced and how transparent they are to the public with this information.

Auditing & Supplier Relationships (25%)In this area we check how many facilities in the supply chain are audited and what is involved in the audits. We also look into how often audits take place and whether a company prioritises building relationships with its suppliers.
Worker Empowerment (30%)In this area we assess whether a company is working to improve wages or paying a living wage and what worker protections are in place, including grievance mechanisms, training, unions and collective bargaining agreements.
Environmental Management (10%)In this area we assess whether brands have evaluated their environmental impact throughout their supply chain, and the systems and programmes they have in place to improve their environmental management.

We’re not only disconnected geographically – we’re disconnected by a lack of knowledge. This disconnect results in exploitation, poverty and human suffering.
The Ethical Fashion Guide connects. It connects you with brands’ efforts to reduce exploitation in their supply chains. It encourages brands to connect with the people making their clothes, and their impact on the environment. When you buy from brands with good grades, you’re supporting fair working conditions and care for the planet.

Who is Tearfund?We’re an international aid and development organisation passionate about seeing individuals and communities transformed by hope, opportunity and dignity.
In our work of seeking justice and an end to poverty and exploitation, Tearfund wants to encourage companies and consumers to connect with the people who make their clothes. We have a partnership with Baptist World Aid Australia to conduct the research for The Ethical Fashion Report, and have compiled this Guide especially for Kiwis.
Our Protect cause combats human trafficking and exploitation, both forced labour and commercial sexual exploitation. We use a ‘5Ps’ approach to describe our activities: Prevention, Prosecution, Protection, Policy and Partnerships. We also work with communities who are vulnerable to labour exploitation, helping reduce their risk and providing post-trauma care and vocational training for those who have been released from trafficking.
