Today we’re going toplay Tricky Word Trucks!

Choose Phase 4Tricky Words.

Design your truck and then read each of the words on the trucks. If you get the word right press the green tick, if you get the word wrong press the red cross.

How many seconds does it take you to read all of the words? Can you do it even faster?

We are now starting to think about Phase 4 words!

The words we are going to be focussing on this week are CVCC words (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant).

We have already read and spelt some of these words while we were covering our Phase 3 content, but now we’re going to really think carefully about strategies we can use to help us read and spell these kinds of words and make sure we don’t leave any sounds or letters out when we are reading and writing!

Let’s start by counting the number of phonemes (sounds) in these words:

Carefully say the words sad and sand. Stretch them out using your invisible elastic bands, and then count how many sounds you can hear on your fingers. Can you hear one, two, three or four sounds?

How did you do?

The word sad has 3sounds

The word sand has 4

Let’s try another one:

Carefully say the words tent and ten. Stretch them out using your invisible elastic bands, and then count how many sounds you can hear on your fingers. Can you hear one, two, three or four sounds?

Now let’s try reading some CVCC words!

A good way to help us read CVCC words is to imagine it is just like rolling a snowball. When you roll a snowball it naturally gets bigger, and bigger and bigger!

Now let’s try reading some CVCC words!

We can use the same technique when we are reading CVCC words. For example, if we are reading the word text, we can start by blending t and e to make te,

then carry on blending te with the next sound x to make tex, finally blend tex with t to make text.

t te tex text

Now it’s your turn!

Read the CVCC word below and match it to the correct picture.Remember if you’re finding it tricky you can use your snowball technique to help!

How many sounds are there in this word?

Make a Match!

Choose Phase 4.

Click on the pictures of the squirell and they will turn over to reveal either a picture or a decodable word. Read the words out loud, using your robot arms, and see if you can match all of the words to the correct pictures.

How quickly can you make all of the matches?

We’re going to continue thinking about CVCC words today:

Now let’s look at those words using some phoneme frames:

When we are spelling CVC words, phoneme frames are a really useful tool to help us see how many sounds are in the word.If we haven’t placed a sound in each of the phoneme frames then we know we must have left something out.

Stretch the word and count the sounds on your fingers before you write a word to make sure you have heard all of the sounds you will need!

i n dwThe word wind contains 4 sounds, so our phoneme frame has 4 boxes.

Phase 4 Tricky Words

Your main job for today is to practise your Phase 4 Tricky Words in a game of pairs!

Create your own set of pairs cards with the Phase 4 tricky words on – you will need two of every word.Take turns to turn over two cards. If they’re a match keep them, if they’re not turn them back over.

Try to remember where the words are when you turn them back over. The winner is the person to win the most pairs!

Why not spark your child’s inner artist at the same time and get them to design an

identical pattern, shape, animal or character for the back of each of the

word cards.

I choose to make a funny green alien!

The possibilities are endless…
