As an additional “help” to our Team Managers, a
series of Helpful Hints are embedded in selected
slides going forward. These are intended to assist
you as you coach, mentor, and guide your teams
through the Challenge.
Helpful Hint: This is an
example of a Helpful
Hint. Such Helpful
Hints are embedded
across a number of the
upcoming slides.
7Challenge Highlights
From the Challenge: Section I
✓ Design and build a freestanding Structure.
✓ Test how much weight the Structure can hold without failing by stacking weights onto the Structure, then removing them.
✓ Create and present a Story in which:
✓ the sudden appearance of a Monster has surprising results.
✓ a Special Effect is triggered to enhance the Monster’s sudden appearance.
✓ two Team Choice Elements are presented. Team Choice Elements showcase the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength and talents.
✓ Teams have 8 min. to present their Story and test the Structure.
✓ Maximum $150 expense (value of items used in the presentation)
Helpful Hint: The Expense Report
Template and guidelines on what
expenses need to be reported are
found in the Rules of the Road. An
electronic version of the template is
available in the Resource Section at
www.destinationimagination.org.
8Current Challenge StateAs of January 1, 2019, two (2) published Clarifications:
Published Clarification #1 20-Nov-2018:
"In the Challenge, Section V.C.3 should read, "Your team must
not use the Tester for any purpose other than testing the
Structure during the Presentation. However, components of
your Special Effect may rest on the Tester Base. Your team
must not use the weights for any purpose other than testing
the Structure and triggering the Special Effect during the
Presentation. (See Section I.H.4.)”
Published Clarification #2 20-Nov-2018:
"Section V.E.6 should be added to Section V.E of the Challenge.
It should read: “To protect the Structure Tester and ensure a
consistent Structure Testing procedure for all teams, your team
must not use powders or open liquids within the Structure
Tester. (See Rules of the Road, General Safety.)”
To date, there have been 5 private clarification responses to MADI teams. Remember: Private clarifications close on 15-February.
9Challenge Scoring
Found in the Challenge: Section IV, pg. 11
Helpful Hint: Help the team to
understand where EVERY POINT can
be earned. Some are very easy (e.g.,
The Bill of Materials); some will
require every bit of the teams’
innovative and creative thinking.
Where might the team want to put its
focus?
10Challenge Scoring (continued)
Found in the Challenge: Section IV
Helpful Hint: Ensure
that the team has
thoroughly reviewed
the Scoring Elements
and analyzed the
details of each of the
Elements to understand
exactly what is being
scored and how it will
be scored.
11
What do these terms really mean?
Deeper Dive into Scoring
12
Technical Design: the result of a
plan for carrying out or
accomplishing a task. A well-
designed Special Effect shows
careful planning, and is effective,
efficient, and reliable
Technical Innovation:
includes how new or
unique, original or creative
methods are used for
initiating and/or producing
the Special Effect
What do these terms really mean?
Scoring Terminology
Creativity: the extent to which
a team makes something its
own, unique to the team and
unique overall
Integration: the
extent to which one
aspect of the
presentation is reliant
on / works together
with other aspects
13Unique to this Challenge:“The Special Effect”
• In film, television, and live theater productions, Special Effects help bring a story to life. Likewise, in this Challenge, the team must create a Special Effect, which must be automatically triggered by a placed weight during Weight Placement, a removed weight during Weight Removal, or the removal of the Pressure Board.
• The Special Effect enhances the sudden appearance of the Monster and/or events surrounding the Monster.
• The Special Effect must be triggered by “technical methods” (see pg. 8 of the challenge).
❑Technical methods refer to the use of principles from fields such as chemistry, computer science, electricity, hydraulics, mechanical or structural engineering, physics. Other technical fields are also acceptable.
• The Special Effect should be clearly visible from 25 ft. away.
• If the Special Effect is not triggered automatically or the Structure fails before the Special Effect is triggered, the team may choose to trigger the Special Effect in another way but will receive a 0 for the automatic triggering.
Helpful Hint: One of the unique features of
Monster Effects is the Special Effect. Spend some
time helping the team to understand all of the
details provided within the Challenge in Sections
I.H and V.E as well as on the Score Sheet.
14Unique to this Challenge:“The Special Effect”
• The construction of the Special Effect is NOT limited by the materials
listed for the Structure in the Challenge. Make sure the team lists all of
the materials or components used in and for the Special Effect on its
Expense Report.
• The Special Effect must not be triggered by the placement of the
Pressure Board; direct contact with the Safety Supports, the Pressure
Board, and/or the weights; or the failure of the Structure. A Special Effect
that is not a part of the Structure and that makes incidental or accidental
contact with the Safety Supports, Pressure Board, and/or weights will not
affect your team’s score
15Unique to this Challenge:“The Special Effect”
• Any time before Weight Placement begins, your team may physically connect the Special Effect to the Structure. After Weight Placement begins, your team may not make any additional physical connections to the Structure.
• All physical connections between the Structure and the Special Effect must be made through one team-selected side of the Structure Tester.
• Replace the Safety Shields before Weight Placement begins. If your team has connected the Special Effect to the Structure, your team will not be required to replace the Safety Shield on that side.
• Physical connections to the Structure must only be used to trigger the Special Effect and must not increase the strength or stability of the Structure.
• If a Special Effect is triggered before Weight Placement begins, your team may reset the Special Effect.
• (Published Clarification) To protect the Structure Tester and ensure a consistent Structure Testing procedure for all teams, your team must not use powders or open liquids within the Structure Tester. (See Rules of the Road, General Safety.)”

17Tournament Day: At a GlanceTournament Day from Start to Finish for the Team Manager:➢ Arrive at the Site; account for the team; get coffee, have sustenance
➢ Register the Team, confirm the Structure Check In Time, the Presentation Time, & the IC
Time
➢ Arrive at Structure Check In, with the Structure & the team supplied container, at the
specified time (at least an hour before the Presentation Time but be mindful that some Tournaments may allow an
earlier Check In—ask, don’t assume)
➢ Be at the Prep Area ~20 min prior to the scheduled Presentation Time
➢ Help (if the team asks) move props to Launch Area when instructed by the appraiser
➢ Sit in the designated chairs in the Audience section of the site
➢ Watch and marvel as the team performs
➢ Remain in your seat during the team’s Q&A with Appraisers
➢ Assist with the removal of the props from the Site when directed by the appraisers (other
parents can help, too!)
➢ Celebrate and encourage the team to celebrate their success!
➢ Return to the designated location at the Presentation Site approximately 45 minutes
after the Presentation, along with one team member, to pick up the team’s score sheet
from the Challenge Master
➢ Attend Closing Ceremonies with your team
➢ Laugh, smile, and relax: your team made it happen! Helpful Hint: Hydrate throughout the day.
Eat something to keep you energy.
Smile—or, at least, fake it--all day long.
Make sure the team sustains itself with
fluids and foods. Keep the fun in “this is
really fun.”
18Step by Step: Before the Tournament
• Help the team to pack an emergency repair kit
• Decide the time and logistics for getting the team, the props, the
paperwork, and the support teams to the site – review the Tournament
Schedule & attend the pre-Tournament Meeting
• Communicate logistics and expectations to all team members &
families– Remind everyone that there is no use of electrical outlets at the sites (except for the
team’s use as part of their Performance)—so charge cell phones, video cameras, and
other electronics at home or in cars, just not and never in the site building(s)
• Be very specific on how the team should dress for the Tournament» Costumes or street clothes
» All team members must be wearing shoes with soles
» Any team member handling weights must be wearing closed-toed shoes
• Relax, Take a Breath, and Smile (Go to bed early the night before the
Tournament)
19Step by Step: Before the Tournament
• Complete the paperwork required
– PLEASE consider using the electronic Team Data Form (TDF) available in
the Resource area at www.destinationimagination.org
– EL Team Managers can type the team’s words for them
– The typed version makes the Appraisers job so much easier and helps
them clearly know what to look for and at! (See end of this slide deck for
examples of the paperwork)
REMINDER: The required paperwork includes:5 copies of the Team Data Form (TDF)
2 copies of the Declaration of Independence
1 copy of the Expense Report
If applicable, 1 copy of each team (private) clarification
Helpful Hint: Make extra
copies of all of the
paperwork and ask other
team members / parents
to carry them “just in
case”
NEXT: Arrive at the
Tournament Site
20Step by Step: Arrival at the Site
• Follow the signs– Upon arrival at your Tournament site, find signs to the following locations (or have
other parents scope these out and report back):
• Registration
• Challenge E Structure Check In
• Challenge E Prop Storage
• Challenge E Performance Site
• Mind the rules– Per MADI Policy, NO electrical outlets in any Tournament Venue may be used by
any team member, team manager, family member, or guest. This specifically
includes no charging of cell phones or other electronic equipment using any site
outlets → please ensure that there are no surprises by communicating this policy
widely in advance of Tournament Day (Teams will have access to a single 3-prong
electrical connection point at the Presentation Site for use during the 8 minute
Performance.)
– We are guests of the sites we are using—as such, we need to ensure that all treat
the sites respectfully and observe all safety rules and posted policies. Report any issues or problems to a member of MADI including the RCM
and/or ACM for this Challenge.
SEE SOMETHING→SAY SOMETHING
Helpful Hint: Keep all
props in your vehicles
as long as possible to
protect them and
because onsite prop
storage is limited
21Step by Step: Arrival at the Site
Divide and conquer• Register your team at the Site Registration Table or location
• Follow signage and any specific directions provided by the
Tournament Director at a pre-tournament meeting
• Confirm the location of prop storage; determine when the team’s props
should be delivered to the designated prop storage location
• REMEMBER: Anyone can help carry props into and out of the site.
Only team members can assemble, repair, modify, fix, or
otherwise change the form, fit, or function of their props,
costumes, or other presentation components. AVOID
INTERFERENCE AND DO NOT LET ANYONE OTHER THAN THE
TEAM TOUCH THEM!
NEXT: Go to Structure
Check In at the
designated timeAdults can be “mules” to
move/transport props all the way to Launch IF the team asks.
22Step by Step: Structure Check In
From the Challenge: Section V
Purpose of Check In: confirm the Structure meets the Challenge specifications
• Scheduled at least 1 hour prior to the team’s Presentation Time (see your
Tournament Schedule)
• Team presents its Structure & completed copies of Pages 2 & 3 of the Tournament
Data Form (TDF) to the Structure Check-in Area Appraiser
• Only the Team will touch its Structure at any time
• Structure is placed on a scale
• Must not exceed 175 grams; weight recorded to the nearest 0.1 grams
• Structure is placed on the representation of the Tester Base
• Verify that a 2” outer diameter cylinder can pass through the structure in the
orientation in which it will be tested
• Verify that the Structure height is at least 7.5” (19.1cm) & no more than 9.0”
(22.9cm)
• Verify that the Structure is made of only those materials listed in Section I.B;
verify that all samples and specified packaging are present
23Step by Step: Check In
From the Challenge: Section V
• If any Structure requirements have not been met, every effort—within reasonable
scheduling constraints—will be afforded the team to bring its Structure into
compliance. Note: if the team cannot bring its Structure into compliance, the team
can still present its solution but both the WHRs (Weight Held and Weight Removed
Ratios) will be 0; everything else will be scored.
• Once the Structure Check-In is complete, the Structure is placed in a team-supplied
storage container which is then sealed and put into secured storage (“The Vault”)
by the Check-in Appraiser.
• If the team does NOT provide a sealable container, there will be garbage
bags available for use in a pinch. Don’t count on it→ make sure the team
brings a container!!!!
Be aware: All structures will be re-inspected after the team’s Presentation
to confirm compliance to the specifications. No structures will be
returned after the team’s Presentation.
NEXT: Go to Prep
Area ~20 min. before
Presentation Time
24Step by Step: Prep
Purpose of Prep: ensure that the team is completely ready—physically, mentally,
& emotionally—to present its solution
• Team reports to the Prep Area ~20 minutes before its scheduled
Presentation Time
• One or more team members must retrieve the sealed container with the
team’s Structure from the secured storage area at Check-In
• The seal on the container may only be broken when the Prep Area
Appraiser advises
• The team needs to present its completed Expense Report, Declaration of
Independence, and FIVE (5) copies of the Tournament Data Forms to the
Prep Area Appraiser who will ensure all entries are completed. The Prep
Area Appraiser will walk the team through a detailed check list to ensure
the team is properly psyched and ready to present.
NEXT: Team moves its
props to the Launch
Area
25Step by Step: Launch
Purpose of the Launch Area: provides a fixed location, within the defined
Presentation Area, in which the team can stage itself and its props prior to
beginning its presentation
• The Launch Line marks the point, behind which, the team can stage both
themselves and any props or materials to be used in the presentation
• The team will be shown the electrical plug in, the Structure Tester, the Launch line,
& the weights. The team will then be introduced to the Weight Placement Appraiser
(WPA) and Time Keeper Announcer (TKA).
• The Time Keeper Announcer or other designed Tournament Official will introduce
the Challenge, the Team, and the Team Managers; and will address all assembled
with a standard greeting.
• At the conclusion of the standard greeting, the team will be asked, “Team, are you
ready?” The team should be prepared with an appropriate response that converges
on “yes.” Once the appraisers are similarly canvassed, the team will be told, “Time
begins now.”
• The Presentation Time starts and the team begins its Performance.
NEXT: Team performs
26Step by Step: Performance
Purpose of the Performance: provides the opportunity for the team to present its
solution for scores
• 8 minutes – running time kept by the Time Keeper Announcer
• Concurrently, the team may conduct the Structure Testing and share its Story
• Appraisers move around the Presentation Site to ensure uninhibited views of
the action and team
• At the end of the 8 minute presentation period, the Time Keeper Announcer
(TKA) announces “Time.”
• At the signaling of “Time” by the TKA, all activity must stop: weight
placement ends; the story ends. The team is typically asked to “take a bow.”
The assembled audience goes wild and crazy with lavish praise.
• Note: The team may use the entire 8-minute Presentation time for Weight
Placement and Weight Removal, regardless of whether or not the team has
ended the performance of your story. The team may also use the entire 8-
minute time for the team’s Presentation regardless of whether or not the
Structure has failed.•
NEXT: Q&A with the
Appraisers
27Step by Step: Q&A with Appraisers
Purpose of the Q&A with Appraisers: provide an opportunity for the Appraisers to
interact directly with the team and to ask questions about details related to the
scoring elements or to clarify observations made during the Performance
• Opportunity for the Appraisers to ask about details around the team’s solution and
to explore the genesis of the ideas and other aspects reflected in the solution
presented.
• The Weight Placement Appraiser will work with one or more team member(s) to
confirm the weights added and weights removed, signing off on the Weight
Placement Worksheet. Once signed, the results are final.
• The Structure must be inspected to verify that all requirements were met. All pieces
of the Structure are collected & inserted into a sealed bag. The Structure will not be
returned to the team; rather, it may be destructively analyzed to confirm that the
materials of construction match the Bill of Materials. The Structure or remaining
pieces of the Structure will be securely disposed of after the Tournament. IF the
Structure is found to be “non-compliant,” the Weight Held and Weight Removed
Ratio will be 0.
NEXT: Exit the Site
and Collect your
scores
28Step by Step: Exit & Collect Scores
Purpose of Exit & Collect Scores: definitive time when the team is instructed to exit
the Presentation Area, taking all props with them and leaving the Presentation Area
exactly as they found it when entering; opportunity to review the team’s “raw” scores
• Adults can assist with removing any items from the Presentation Area
• The Presentation Area must be cleaned and restored to the same condition as the
team found it upon entering→ the team must bring / provide all the clean-up materials
needed for its post-presentation clean-up
• Secure all the props in the team’s transport vehicles
• The RCM will point out the “Are My Scores Ready?” Poster to the Team Manager and
confirm the location to meet when the scores are ready to be returned
• Scores are returned to no more than 1 team manager and 1 team member, typically 45
minutes after the end of the Presentation; the Scores that are returned are the RAW
scores, not scaled.
• While the team exits, the Appraisers complete the Scoring Forms and write Sticky
Notes
NEXT: Celebrate!
29
Step by Step: Celebrate!
Purpose of Celebrate:
reflect on, recognize,
and savor the team’s
victory over the
Challenge; they (you)
have earned the
opportunity; enjoy the
moment
• Attend Closing
Ceremonies
• Go home
