EDITOR'S LETTER
Vtrends Team
To live sustainability thoroughly is to reinforce at all times the premise that actions speak louder than words. Because, much beyond slogans and catchphrases, what makes the difference is the commitment to balance all links in the chain, so that, together, they notice urgent in-novations. Both to create a methodology which, in fact, has an impact on the environment to form a benchmark for the industry, and to in-spire end consumers to develop a truly ecological, responsible mind.
It is looking at urgently coherent solutions that, in this issue, we insist on the jeanswear industry as a banner of this necessary revolution. In About V, in addition to having access to details of how denim and twill designed by VICUNHA have elevated the mar-ket to much more engaged and eco-sufficient purposes, you get to know how our pioneer actions leverage possibilities also through-out the industry.
The magazine that you have in your hands also took deep dives. Come explore with us behind the curtains: we have demystified all trends that are hot now; first, with a clarifying portray of the behav-ior that articulates each one of the trends – our great distinguishing feature for years, after all, everything that leaves a trace also reveals a context. And seeing from up close the patchwork of knowledge and social (and sensorial!) attitudes that guide fashion is essential to understand its timeless value – speaking of which, patchwork comes back strong this season, read more about it on the next pages. Also, to scrutinize the hottest choices, we zoomed every detail of color, fab-ric and texture of the products (focus on Modal and Lyocell, natural fibers, the apple of our eye this season). Not to mention the guide that results in styling tricks able to update the fall-winter fashion.
VNext and Gallery open way to the fresh and engaged generation in the disruptive and transforming knowledge of the collaborative economy: we are proud to introduce six young people that are revo-lutionizing art and fashion, from the teacher that created a street-wear brand with his students at public school (all very talented print makers) and the fashion designer from São Paulo that uses upcycling to reinvent authorial, überchic outfits.
After all, our vocation remains the same during these 51 years: an excellent bureau of sustainable ideas. And, since the most important part is the journey, more than speaking, we take one step at a time. Come with us!

TRENDS AW20

VTrends visits the four trends that will move the coldest season of 2020 and anticipates what will be hot in color, fit,
and fabric trends

Get ready: The following inputs will give you a complete overview of the fashion trends for next winter. It’s not just an inventory of the jeanswear universe, with denim, twills and its best possibilities of laundry and making to be tuned with the thermometers – but above all a comprehensive guide of guidelines that drive the mindset of the super-connected consumer.
When thinking about the looks of the season, it is important to keep in mind a constant: always evaluate from the viewpoint of comfort. This time, the kings of the fashion game are 100% cotton fabrics, sweatshirts, athletic inspiration, and lightweight items. They are
“clothes that embrace” the four trends that we are following – de-scribed below – and the sustainable DNA of VICUNHA, concerned this season with balancing pillars of inclusion, creativity, and commit-ment to the environment through well-being.
Our first trend, “Pretty Ugly”, is full of references from sportswear and the urban Gothic universe. It is an ode to imperfection, to the delight of one being what he or she is, preventing unattainable pat-terns of beauty from resounding in the loss of identity and aban-donment of what is original. Inspired directly by the clubbing aes-thetics of the 1990s, but also in the late 19th century and its pioneer approach on ugliness, the trend brings a sort of revisited grunge fashion, destroyed pieces, a very strong stretch, and a sober – yet sparkling – palette.
The “Comfy Life” trend, on the other hand, vibrates toward the ho-listic role of clothing, contributing to a general slowdown. It is all about elegance, low-profile harmony, and functional incentive. That is, natural and extremely soft fibers, flexible fabrics, uncomplicated raw looks, and the freedom of the unisex character. Again, there is something nostalgic, a real struggle against anxiety and hurry.
Speaking of resistance and confrontation, “Defenders” is the name of the current social activism that leads to the sewing of looks of at-titude, but of a quiet touch – after all, it is necessary to enable this combat for plurality, and nothing better than to feel comfortable to fight the injustices and inequalities of the planet. The look feeds on a 1970s aesthetic, mixing a lot of color to the handmade touch and finishing with very contradictory shapes.
Last but not least, the trend “Another Man” is a real cartography of the new masculinity, punctuated by the collapse of the identity logic that forced men to cultivate insensitivity and belligerence. Indeed, it deconstructs itself and gains other directions from looks that refer to sensitivity, either in a range of romantic colors or borrowed from women’s fashion. Once again, a flashback that goes far away in the past: to Ancient Greece and its cult of affection and politeness.
As it turns out, vintage speaks loudly in this fall-winter season, help-ing to shatter old concepts and reshape them. After all, modernizing the past is a fashion evolution. Thus, let us take your hand to unveil the new on the next pages.

We have so many reasons to love beauty. It’s harmonious, symmet-rical, organized. Ugliness, on the other hand, is just unutterable. We got used to ignoring it at an early age. For imperfection disturbs – from Homer’s Iliad, in which the ugly had no character, at the same time as the beauty of a woman, Helena, was capable of unprecedent-ed combat, the Trojan War. Especially because while the concepts of beauty are pleasantly restricted, and perhaps for this reason under-stood, ugliness is a bottomless pit of plurality. “The beautiful has but one type; the ugly has a thousand,” wrote the author of The Hunch-back of Notre-Dame, Victor Hugo. As it occurred with a succession of thinkers in post-Enlightenment Europe of the 19th century, Victor Hugo was against what was accepted until then and led to ways of rethinking ugliness. It is a shame that the movement did not resist in the 20th century. Industry, technology, and all the force that raises beautiful things have valued perfection, selling unattainable ideals, preserving the beautiful above the ugly.
Nevertheless, a new “grotesque march” is taking over this time. And fashion, which has such a cruel history in this field, now is acknowl-edging for its error and acting as the backdrop to this revolution. The Angels era is gone. Nowadays, not only the streets but also the catwalks reproduce the freedom of the beauty of the imperfect, of self-expression, of the underworld of estrangement. Ironically in-spired by the same decades dominated by supermodels, young people around the world have dug in the subculture of the 1990s and early 2000s, in a sort of revival of the clubbing aesthetics, so defiant of standards. Thus, the mood for fabrics and shapes came straight from a rave party. That is, they are baggy fit without frills; varia-tions of neon palettes in a non-hippie tie-dye; streetwear with a twist, full of references of sportswear, such as jeans with sweatpants, ul-tra-comfortable fit; elements borrowed from the urban-gothic uni-verse, very dark coatings, very high stretch, the destroyed outlook, gathering shabby elements, prints, and dark texts. A technologically advanced, fresh grunge style that opens the industry range to count-less high-impact versions.
At the right time, the trend echoes some necessary relativism in these polarized times. Perhaps they are the first steps of a renewal of values. In the end, there is nothing more democratic than loving the ugly.

The underground parties of two decades ago bring the punk mood to the free-dom to experiment that defines the looks that are hot now. The dark clubber, raver and gothic aesthetic spices up useful separates and silhouettes that go from fit to oversized; everything with a sporty, extremely comfy pinch. The jeanswear is rebel, imperfect and brings unconventional cutouts, with vin-tage wash and details such as folds and wear marks, bringing a one-of-a-kind characteristic to the pieces. keY pIeces: a little of everything, such as baggy pants and skinnier ones; urban shorts; and solid jackets, that go from preppy to pop, being deconstructed with short-sleeved pieces, oversized vests, sweat-
style tops and even shift dresses.

The worn and faded effect is worked on both rigid and elastic bases – and with an excellent return –, on special dyes in black options, and also as intense blue hues. In addition, the athletic concept is crucial. In an experimental and subversive drapery, pieces with jogging con-struction and jeans look at the same time contribute to the interpre-tation of this young style. As it should be, the aesthetic asks for an artsy expression, with effects of bleach and Stencil techniques mold-ing phrases of effect in Gothic typography, the icing on the cake of customized outfits, full of character.

coloridas e estamparia a laser.

The subversive style inspires creative interferences in the traditional color palette. The result is a retro-futuristic attitude mixing bright colors with dark shades. Vibrant pink, neon yellow, fluorescent orange, lime green and purple join the dark palette in asymmetric dyes. The mood is vibrant. Prints repro-duce the trace of tribal tattoos, in addition to writings and handwritten words of command. And tie-dye helps expand the offer of effects and combination of contrasting colors. keY pIeces: stained pants, multi-colored jackets and
laser printworks.

The current fabrics reflect a radical universe, bringing together seemingly contradictory references, like funny & dark. Incidentally, in connection with the underground, the anarchic style prints a cer-tain dream scent, using techniques such as tie-dye and acid wash to embellish darker shades of diverse colors, from discrete to vibrant, neon-marker pen colors. The light, resinous bases pack the articles with a futuristic atmosphere.

Aqui o inusitado faz a festa. Here, the unusual rules. The Clubber vibe dominates RETRO RAV-ER, with its washed out look and multi-color, water-colored stains or randomly sprinkled. In URBAN SPIRIT, the industrial mood of rave parties inspires graphic prints and textures, and the ton sur ton is done with worn out effects and sewing marks. COLOR TRANCE brings colorful acid wash, in addition to stains and spat-ters, referring to the psychedelic lights at the dance floor, which adds to the alternative mood with nostalgic scent of this trend.

The vibe of the season can be summarized in taking inspiration for your wardrobe close to a true slowdown movement. Take a deep breath, look inside, let it go: it is time to evaluate fashion from the viewpoint of
comfort – both individual and collective

Nesta temporada, a ideia é desacelerar.
Descomplique.
This a fashion anti-platitude, the current vibe asks for the opposite of the style that dominates most editorials – the workaholic rhythm in looks that fill the no-time-out generation. This season, the idea is to slow down, fluidly and organically.
Face it as a refresh in the sort-of-new age mysticism that was highly trendy until recently. Gurus have fallen to the ground, not by chance or randomly. The truth is that we finally understand the value of holistic life ruled by ourselves, without unreasonable rigidity or over-discipline. Focusing on pleasure, serenity, and the inner self – the recollection that privileges the idea of home as synonymous with placidity, our homes versus chaos.
It is the representation of the Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy, which encourages an intuitive and easy going way of life. A necessary de-cluttering: according to the World Health Organization, almost 10% of the world population suffers from disorders that combine panic, compulsion, and stress. What will become of us in the long run, sat-urated by gigantic cities, traffic, guilt, burden, and anxiety?
It is in this context that the new fabrics bring a soothing effect. To reestablish warmth (think of fibers that “embrace”) and conscious-ness (such a sense of responsibility, in consumption or relation to the community). One example is the jeans mix that goes from the very soft and flexible fabric to the more structured and sustainable denim (VICUNHA Absolut Eco line, whose production saves up to 90% of chemicals and up to 95% of water).
The aesthetic translates certain savoir-faire of the Scandinavians, their casual, minimal elegance and, nevertheless, totally cool. De-constructed tailoring, large proportions, upcycling; it’s a high-low mix of rusticity and high quality, privileging the functional design. Hence the unisex character of the pieces. “A fashion for people, not for genres,” said Miuccia Prada.
The color chart also gains prominence. It’s next to nature, either in natural dyeings or in the nuances that refer to the opaque tones of the first rays of the sun of the day, the foliage of the plants, the pallor of resorts in the winter. It couldn’t be otherwise: pastel shades are so easy to coordinate. After all, the idea is to let it flow. It’s about uncomplicating.

In this area, comfort guides the choice of fabrics. Therefore, touch and sustainability are paramount. The main bets for this trend are denim mesh with multi-directional stretch, lightweight items, prod-ucts made using greener processes, and brushed inseam bases. The use of fibers such as Modal type and cotton – essential to the feeling of coziness – is also trendy. The jeans are lightly lightened, with subtle nuances. Next to it, watercolor tie-dye refers to organic ele-ments. It’s a blend of sophistication and well-being, in perfect bal-ance with the thermometers.

In soft shades, the rustic look brings natural dyes from a calming, water-col-ored palette, in variations of beige, gray, off-white and pastel colors. An an-drogynous fashion highlighted by the versatility of the monochromatic look and the support of textures, such as pleats and twill with wrinkled surface. The idea is to adopt key pieces that adjust to any styling, especially because of the neutrality and quality of the materials. keY pIeces: sustainable fabrics; nostalgic details such as skinny bows, quilt and plaits; one-pieces such as dress

A paleta é zen.
Soothing colors and embracing fabrics, light bases, shirts with con-structions of twill and crepe are the picture perfect of this trend. Fi-bers such as Modal, viscose, and cotton are essential because they have an extremely pleasant touch in addition to their sophisticated look. Also, sewing machine-made constructions refer to the tailoring and the delicacy that this mood values so much. Finally, washings refer to more abstract elements, using the effect of delicate microtex-tures. The palette is zen.

E, a partir do guarda-roupa,

A new activism movement gains strength among nonconformists and dissidents of our troubled conjuncture. And, from the wardrobe outside,
it helps to remodel a fairer society

“Holding each other close across differences, beyond conflict, through change, is an act of resistance.” The Afro-American thinker and feminist bell hooks put it this way in her introduction to the recent Brazilian edition of the 1992-classic Black looks: race and repre-sentation (Editora Elefante). In almost 400 pages of pure didactics and reflection, hooks (Gloria Watkins’ pseudonym written just like that, in lowercase letters) condemns the individualized and restrict-ed look we have became so familiar with. Moreover, she proposes a new way of revisiting it: by looking for the other side of the coin – that is, to plunge deeply into the dominant narrative, which rein-forces the maintenance of privileges to the strongest and leaves so many on the sidelines, either by color, gender concepts or sexual preferences, for neurological imbalance (have you heard of neurodi-versity?), class and or even territory. Hooks is an example of activ-ism that is gaining momentum today – especially because she dis-solves into manifesto the very act of existing. “The most important thing in my books is substance, not who I am,” she says, stating the reason for giving up uppercase letters.
Great human beings in tiny letters have inspired one of the strongest trends of the moment. Made up of young people willing to promote a positive identity crisis, this new movement shakes the current stabil-ity. The idea is to move its structures to plural scenarios.
In other words, the Defenders take advantage of fearless diversity, in an impetus of honesty and transparency. Therefore, we should think of looks with an attitude, made of denim and twill that exploit as many washes and prints as possible. Hence also the emphasis on handmade: all the appreciation of the social aspect that is behind the craft, a vintage balance that refers to urgent matters. In 1970’s rhythm, from knitting to patchwork, from frayed threads to multi-ple textures, including far-from-obvious shapes full of comfort. The focus is also on small, authoritative and, of course, sustainable busi-nesses. In other words, the axis is to dress with purpose, celebrating authenticity and imperfection.
In this fresh atmosphere, fashion behavior is an ally. After all, we must always bear in mind that, in fashion, there is room for everyone.

Ultimately traditional, 100% cotton fabrics have more structured weight and sharp looks. They are ideal for the vintage mood fashion interpretation, also made up of wear effects. Thus, you should ex-plore all the possibilities in shades and hues of blue, also considering wrinkles, frayed finishings, and a lot of torn effects. The classic tex-tures – for example, the aspect of corduroy construction – appear in bases with comfort stretch and provide a winter boho finish.

On its side, POP HANDCRAFT adds and mixes knit, macrame, and embroidery to jeanswear, resulting in handmade deluxe. The jeans universe in NEW PATCHES is classic, but flaps are positioned ex-perimentally in an artsy and deconstructed mood. The autumnal tones guide VINTAGE JOURNEY and MULTI TEXTURE: while the previous brings together different types of fabric in one patch, the latter bets on the worn look of faded types of denim with marked stitiching and a 3D mustache.

It’s not about a street style magazine phenomenon anymore. Men now walk out wearing prêt-à-porter looks far away from the genre clichés. Tailoring, much younger and lighter, has normalized. The same has occurred to the men’s wardrobe, now borrowing more nat-urally than ever elements that belong to the women’s closet, from the turtleneck to the cinched waist. Indeed, the fashion perfume is retro, but make no mistake: its inspiration could not be more current. This is one of the results - perhaps the first to be pulled – of a global move-ment to reform masculinity.
After all, the menacing imperative “Be a Man!”, which became a reprimand for little boys, helped to develop unhappy clichés. Misog-ynist and aggressive are commonplace words when we think of the social construction of masculinity. More than xY chromosomes, men hold the strength, money, and security - another commonplace used to measure male values so far. Those who show fragility are damned. According to a Google study from July last year, more than half of Brazilian men have been called “effeminate” just for expressing their feelings. After all, boys don’t cry.
Beyond a manly crisis, the problematization of the male identity has gained the name and the (de) construction of a whole concept: toxic masculinity. In fact, this is the very old destructive cliché that one wants to extinguish. It should be done to narrow the distance be-tween men and a softer, sentimental, and compassionate modus operandi, the same used by the Greeks in their acts of worship to beauty, knowledge, and delicacy.
In a perfect fusion between the distant past and the esteemed future, fashion leads this crossing, in a gentle and contemporary romanti-cism that, as it only could be, also reflects on women’s fashion. De-constructed blues and various stripes make up ruffles and bulky sleeves in a kind of unisex navy style. The paleness of the fabrics contrasts with the versatility of the trim: pleats and pence are simul-taneously crafted, always elegant and mandatorily cozy. Ultimately, a paradigm shift of such dimension would not go unnoticed, but it should be sweet – just like the men we are longing for.

A certain refinement that misses the past, combined with a more than cur-rent proposal to deconstruct the gender hit jeanswear right between the eyes. For this man of the future, the biggest inspiration lives in the past: tailor-ing appears with retro proportions, with high waist – and very marked, just like women’s –, cropped pants, in addition to pleats and subtle darts. As for women’s wardrobe, a soft romanticism gathers monastic elements, with long lengths, inflated shapes and minimum skin showing – the aesthetic modesty borrowed from men’s wardrobe. keY pIeces: retro shape and very marked
silhouette; unisex, utilitarian elements, such as jackets, shirts and vests.

The problematization of the male identity breaks paradigms, bringing to light disruptive, cloudy realities, covered by a chic, unique softness. Thus, the pastel palette circulates mostly around cream and off-white, as if these shades were mixed to the primary colors in the creation of less explicit, but not inexpres-sive, variables. It is the case of dusty pink and cherry, the oscillations of nude and camel, in addition to olive-green and a more closed navy (mandatory when it comes to navy, also seen everywhere). keY-pIeces: layered pieces ton sur ton; balance between trousers in the cream shade and darker jackets, or vice versa; elongated, sweet-colored silhouettes, without a hint of childishness;
chalk stripe and variations of the navy blue, white and red triad.

Stripes in various widths and colors bring to STRIPE LOVE a nautical scent, and PREPPY MOOD transforms soft, malleable fabrics into pieces that totally follow the 60’s college style.

Anyone who sees the crowded clothes racks in Juliana Yoshi’s stu-dio does not imagine that they are the result of pure deconstruction.
“It’s the sum of everything I gathered and which was decluttered later,” she says. She refers to her life learnings. Like when she lived in Amsterdam and had contact with highly developed concepts of sustainability; in her college days, where the talent for men’s fashion surfaced; the years in which she learned about fabrics and ended up as a fashion designer at Vila Romana brand; the phase in which she felt tired of the hurried pace of São Paulo and moved to a country-side smalltown, in her grandmother’s house – which turned into an intensive training on the Japanese culture of non-waste; and, back to São Paulo, the talent for reinvention she found in costume designer jobs. Ju deconstructs tailoring separates from the city’s thrift shops. Her smart eye when browsing makes a difference to the following high-level upcycling process. With a one-of-a-kind shape, blazer jackets are paired with overcoats; oxford shirts turned into cropped shirts; pants take on elegance never achieved before; and full suits revive like cool overalls – an attitude she reproduced here with the Morus (Absolut Eco) denim by VICUNHA.

Processes are sequences of facts that make sense along the way. Ev-erything can start at random. However, in a process, even mistakes are saved. Zineu had something like that in life. Originally named Lineu 26 years ago as a tribute to his paternal grandfather – but officially registered as Zineu by a fault of the scrivener –, he became a fashion designer obsessed by processes. From t-shirts to habillé pieces, he always starts from moulage creation in raw cotton. His first col-lection, a tribute to Ceará’s artist Leonilson, brought extremely high cut bodysuits and fluffy organza and silk dresses, which he wisely adapted later using linen, tricoline, and twill versions. “More mar-ket-oriented,” he says. “But yet they deserve the same care: inspired by another reference that excites me, the Greek tragedy Leda and the Swan, and without giving up the fine finishings.” The finishings are inherited from his work with Reinaldo Lourenço. For VICUNHA, he revisited all his elegant attitude in a gown that is zero romantic, but which plays safely as an ace in the hole for any gala ball.

On the Korean island of Jeju, diving ladies have changed the lo-cal economy by using their own breath: without equipment, they take deep breaths and swim as deeply as possible to collect seafood
– some of them are 90 years old and can spend hours under water. “They turned Jeju into a matriarchy. And they definitely inspired who I am,” says Josephine Cho, owner of the brand that bears her surname. Passionate about the ocean, she was plunging headlong into her desires that flowed into fashion. The Korean illustrator who arrived in Brazil at age 7 understood that transforming her features into cloth would help her to see beyond. “My author ex-pression is a result of how I feel under my clothes.” With her great mentor, fashion designer Juliana Jabour, she was able to leave the shell. She learned the value of a network of contacts, the styling mastery, and the constancy in work. Currently, she channels her attitude through ultra-feminine minimalism, far from any truism: utilitarian pieces have washed tones; a palette of ashes, raw, and off-whites; and extravagant shapes, as shown here with Creta and Natural Dark twills.

Martin LanezanBorn in Madariaga, in the Argentinean Pampas, Martin Lanezan in-terprets life from the point of view of the gaucho culture. It is in this context that the image-based collection of his work is created. When it’s time for the siesta, when people hide from the heat, and the light makes everything unbearably real, it is when the magic of the artist’s universe happens. His works are talismans, filled with the local imag-inary fiction and folklore. Although he lives in São Paulo, the works are strongly connected with his place of birth, for example, in their shape (of ponchos); they are their own space that welcome him, like they were a home.

In addition to being an artist, Pepi is an arts teacher. After graduat-ing, he found in teaching a way to develop his work. And this is how he shows his students in public schools that every type of drawing can be a source for inspiration – which is the case of the writings on the desks, pure manifestations filled with aesthetic sense and person-ality. In the classroom that became an atelier, students are not only learners, but helpers of the artist. There, they can be themselves: write and draw about what they really feel, without fearing retalia-tion, in addition to proposing new ideas for collaborative works. This is how the Otário project was conceived, a clothes label made with drawings by these students. In Pepi’s opinion, art does not need to be limited to galleries and museums. Quite the contrary, schools also can (and should) be a space for it.

Daughter and granddaughter of Japanese seamstresses, Yuli Ya-magata transforms her thoughts into sewn works of art. Frames and sculptures made of needles, thread and fabric materialize her desires. The result is inspired by the evil intention in advertising and is conceived instinctively – although sometimes Yuli suspects that her academic experience determines choices that are merely aesthetic in terms of composition. What helps balance all influences is the habit of being the creator and spectator of her own work. Thus, it is al-ways her unconscious that gives a symbolic nature to the whole and makes it possible for the work of art to speak equally with observers.

POINT OF VIEW
sustentabilidade no mercado mundial
Algodão Brasileiro Responsável (ABR – Brazilian Responsible Cotton): the program that made Brazil become
a sustainability leader in the world market
Texto Text Milton Garbugio
Brazil is getting ready to rise to the top positions in the global cotton export sphere. If all goes as cotton farmers and the market are expect-ing, we will be the second largest exporters in this 2018-2019 harvest, planted one year ago and that is being reaped now. It is expected that 2.1 million tons of feather will go out in the world, whereas about 700,000 tons stay here, supplying the Brazilian textile industry. All this resulting from 1.6 million hectares of plantations, spread in ten Brazilian states. No wonder we are the fourth biggest producer of the fiber and one of the top producers in the general calculation of pro-ducing countries – actually, we are absolute leaders if we consider that, here, we plant almost only with rainwater, without using artificial irrigation like our competitors.
The figures are impressive and involve a lot of expertise and significant investment. But, maybe, no rank position is as significant as being the largest supplier of sustainable feather in the world. Currently, Brazil represents 30% of all cotton licensed by the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), international reference in licensing feather produced according to the sustainability parameters. It is a global program that is present in 21 countries whose approval has been more and more decisive in the market thanks to the clear increase in demand for products produced in social, environmental and economical correct conditions, especially as a consequence of the awareness of the end consumer.
Saying that we are proud to be the largest producers of sustainable cotton on the planet does not have anything to do with surfing the po-litically correct wave. For us, Brazilian cotton farmers, it only means that we are certain that we have made the right choice two decades ago, when we started planting cotton in the Brazilian cerrado, after a beetle and an abrupt economic opening almost put an end to the cotton activity in the country, in the early 90’s.
It was when we understood that, to bring back the Brazilian cotton farming, a revolution would be necessary. First, in the way we think: it was essential to make it able to last as a business throughout gener-

ations and generations of cotton farmers, as well as to guarantee qual-ity, scale and remuneration to rural producers sufficient to encourage them to continue harvest after harvest. As a consequence, we needed a change in the way we acted: adopting better practices, technologies and raw materials, in order to be more productive. This philosophy marked the Brazilian modern cotton farming, breaking records and up to date with the most important agendas stipulated to countries. In sum, aligned with the concept of sustainability supported by three pil-lars – environmental, social and economic – and that guarantees the rational use of all productive resources – natural, human or financial.
When cotton farmers adopted sustainability as a principle, they did not know that the market would pay more for this, consumers would give more importance to the attitude and the society would give a standing ovation. It was a matter of survival that coincided with the organization and creation of the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (Associação Brasileira dos Produtores de Algodão - Abrapa), in 1999. A little later, in 2005, the concept gained the shape of a program, with the creation of the Social Cotton Institute (In-stituto Algodão Social - IAS), in Mato Grosso, which evolved to a national initiative, four years later, with the Social-Environmental Cotton Production Program (Programa Socioambiental da Pro-dução de Algodão - Psoal). It was the beginning of the BCI licens-ing in Brazil, in 2010, and two years later the Brazilian Responsible Cotton Program (Programa Algodão Brasileiro Responsável - ABR) was created, and its protocol was unified to BCI, with the two initia-tives operating in benchmarking.
The ABR and the BCI comply with the same sustainability criteria. But the Brazilian initiative surpasses the standard of the interna-tional entity, because it is absolutely connected to the compliance with labor and environmental laws in Brazil, considered one of the most advanced and strict in the world. In addition, the compliance with these criteria is progressive, which forces certified producers to move forward harvest after harvest.

Producers who join ABR can automatically choose to be licensed also by BCI. Joining the programs is voluntary, and by doing so, producers commit to follow a strict protocol of good agricultural practices in their farms – which comprises 224 items only for the verification phase for diagnosis, which comes before the certifica-tion, and 178 other items to finish the process, which ends with the issuance of the certificate and consequent emission of the seals that will be attached to the bales.
These requirements go from managerial aspects of the agricultural enterprise to the compliance with legislation. They also include compliance with labor safety rules, prohibition of child labor, forced labor or modern slavery labor, in addition to protecting the envi-ronment, with the application of good agriculture techniques in the production of the commodity.
Currently, 80% of all cotton produced in Brazil are ABR/BCI certified. In the 2018-2019 harvest, in progress, Abrapa expects to reap 2.25 million tons only of certified feather, coming from 1.25 million hect-ares. It is something that is impossible to ignore, or fail to conclude, proudly: sustainability is today a commitment for cotton farmers, adding value to the retail and industry, in addition to a decisive factor for end consumers. If, for cotton farming, it made all the difference between prosperity and the end, for human kind it also represents the guarantee of permanence of our species and all living beings on the planet, which are directly or indirectly impacted by our decisions.
Milton Garbugio is president of the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (Associação Brasileira dos Produtores de Algodão - Abrapa)
ABR: The Brazilian Responsible Cotton Program is the synthesis of the union of cot-ton farmers to the benefit of a more sustainable cotton production in Brazil. Among its proposals: promote the progressive evolution of good social, environmental and economic practices; continuously improve the sustainable management of productive units: and spread, among the members, the sustainability pillars, in order to align with the guidelines that direct governments, entities and the whole society.
BCI: Better Cotton Initiative is a non-profit organization created in 2005, headquar-tered in Geneva, Switzerland. It acts aiming at improving the world cotton production, both for formers and for the environment and the future of the sector. Its associates are entities that represent producers, prestigious clothes making brands, retailers, suppliers and other links of the cotton economic chain, in addition to the society. The BCI process works in a chain, which allows gains for producers, the industry and consumers; all parties co-responsible for maintaining a market that acts with social and environmental responsibility.

Our noble Bradley jeans, 100% cotton and dyed with Special Dye (mix of Sulphur and indigo which results in a raw denim shade), combined with the details of Marina Black Black II, made of cotton and elastane, with very malleable stretch and super dark dye, helped compose the western chic collection, with fringes, leather and preppy patent.

The most explosive denim wash of the season, the 80’s trend of the acid jeans is already a hit with Flavia Rotondo and Alexandre Ma-netti’s label. Not only because it rescues the retro-futuristic scent de-sired for outfits, with high-waist tie pants and shirt, but also thanks to Deep Finish®, which finishes the flat look of Marina Dark II by VICUNHA. The industrial touch of the monochromatic outfits totally matches the cosmopolitan winter: practical without being obvious, spontaneously chic. The Marina II denim has the structure of the twill with slub effect and is absolutely versatile from the washing point of view, from deeper blue to white – the jacket combined with the high, five-button waist is a smart styling trick: uncomplicated (especially thanks to the stretch effect and the soft touch of the fabric) and, at the same time, trendy.

Célio Dias, from Minas Gerais, got used to taking the agender fashion to a different level of colors – and calling attention for it: his brand has just been to Milan, where it was a guest participant at a fair that happened simultaneously to the fashion week. And this happened after he showed his Winter 2019 collection, a mixture of earthy and bright shades (such as turquoise and lemon green) in looks inspired by the traditional culture of Northeastern Brazil. Post-modern can-gaceiros are made of Ariana Soft, from the Carbolumen line, which brings the look of leather, added by the comfort of cotton fiber and the fit of high stretch content.

HIGHLINES
Porque nosso know-how sustentável vai muito além do blá-blá-blá e lugar-comum destes tempos.
Eis o novo status quo do comportamento fashion.

Much before they became trendy, our sustainable actions were al-ready a reality. This is the ethics that has guided VICUNHA’S decisions for more than 50 years, from the investment in large projects to the creation of new fabrics. This is because our sustainable know-how goes beyond the blah-blah-blah and commonplaces of today.
The practices that we have incorporated into the factory scope during our trajectory, such as recycling waste and processes that al-low a lower consumption of chemicals and water, help continuously inspire the links in the production chain. And not only to expand our own aware methodology – which is the case of the fabrics created in the Absolut Eco and Color Recycle lines, made from recycled raw material. But especially to become a global example to be followed. It is not for another reason that we have created, in a partnership with Movimento ECoERA, the VICUNHA Water Footprint program, pioneer in calculating the consumption and management of water in the whole lifecycle of a pair of jeans. The idea is to inspire the market with better references to make durable – and desirable – products.
The new products that you see on the next pages are aligned with our philosophy, in search for a fashion that is more inclusive, creative and committed with the planet, this time from the well-being point of view. Comfort is the star of the season. Because the number 1 premise for a balanced closet is the celebration of each piece of cloth-ing, either to direct consumption towards quality that lives up to the investment or to bring extra attention to the sensations offered by the fabrics. Thus, nothing can be as symbolic as jeanswear to be in the front row of this sensorial universe: capable of attracting attention for its practicality and for being objects of desire, denim and indigo are synonym with coziness. The classic fashion item of which we are world leaders now in new clothing: in finishes and materials that are elevated to the next level in terms of comfort, jeans becomes a true banner for the contemporary revolution that appreciates satisfaction guided by being, above having. This is the new status quo of the fashion behavior.

ATHLEISURE
Athletic Denim
VICUNHA embarcou no hype transcendendo minimalismos.

Drift and Drift Black are options of jeanswear with the melange thread, very wintery, whose comfy look composes a paradox that supplements the concrete routine in the city, going with the same naturalness from the office to a night out. With highlight to the well-marked diagonal and the heather seamy side, which brings many options to handle the product. Versatility is also a character-istic of the Lebron, with over dye, that allows countless washes and effects, with worn-out effect. The Nadal is treated inside out until it gets a “peach touch”, going much beyond the usual comfort for contact with the skin, which elevates it to the status of instant hot piece made of Modal fiber.
A mix & match of casual and sporty elements, the style that is hot now is reflected in a fresh and ultra-comfortable streetwear that is also sophisticated. Sign of the times: more than ever, we prioritize the sources of vitality that the day-to-day can offer, to the detriment of whatever wears us out – physically, emotionally and ecologically. All this without letting go of the aesthetic value, which translates who we are. The boom of the sporty look with a preppy touch is, for this reason, more than a mere trend, it became a lifestyle.
VICUNHA joined the hype that transcends minimalisms. With the retro glamour that is trendy again, the ATHLETIC collections have the jeanswear look with sweat construction, guaranteeing absolute mobility. The new items open the way for countless washing effects, that add to the diversity of constructions, in a composition of silhou-ettes in denim. Comfort is the new cool.

The choice of looks, today, goes beyond the reflection on the mirror. Beyond any fit, what stands out now is pleasure. Feeling well when you dress yourself is the mood not only for this season, but it will last for the future. Of course, there is no longer a beauty dictatorship. It is time now for diversity to rule, embracing varied bodies and redefinitions of the gender concept. It is time to welcome what chal-lenges the (cruel) standard of perfection. Therefore, nothing could be more natural than wardrobes echoing the relief of being who you are. Above this: celebrate this well-being, for example, in fabrics and shapes that embrace you – it is the début of an affective relation with clothes, and the guarantee of much wiser buying habits.
The début of new products in the MooVE DENIM and MooVE CoLoR lines is an immediate result of all this. The focus here are fibers. With the product mix made of Modal, that brings qualities in perfect sustainable tune, that is to say, resistant, ecological and delicious: produced from cellulose found in wood, Modal complies with high standards of environmental protection, guarantees extreme softness (even after repeated washes) and has high absorption capability – that is to say: bright, high intensity colors.
The Amsterdam twill comes in brushed finish and satin construction, a much-sought-after fabric for the season. VICUNHA is investing in a sober palette, in more closed shades of red, green and khaki, and also white, black and navy blue.

If fashion follows the zeitgeist, jeanswear is its most loyal photogra-phy: for decades, the democratic denim has been a much-desired item, sometimes provocative, sometimes glamorous, and today it is in tune with the search for sustainability. During the past years, the Inter-net and the phenomenon of social media made information flow at an unprecedented rate, and action was demanded from fashion be-cause of its social and environmental impact in its production chains. More informed and engaged, consumers now don’t want only beau-tiful clothes, but they want them to tell the story of positive impact.
According to Chiara Gadaleta, consultant and creator of Movi-mento ECoERA, which combines the sectors in the industry from the environmental, social, economic and cultural sustainability point of view, companies can help educate these consumers based on trans-parent information. “It is important for companies to know their impact in order to guide consumers based on data, not suppositions,” she states. VICUNHA foresaw this movement and, during the past de-cades, has devoted itself to making its production processes more efficient, reducing the use of water, energy and raw material, in ad-dition to innovations in many of its stages, aiming at taking the most advantage of resources and minimizing its impact.
VICUNHA innovated when it launched jeans made from recycled threads and techniques without intensive use of water. And, now, it takes an even bigger step with the VICUNHA Water Footprint Project. Since November 2018, in a partnership with consultancy H2O Com-pany, Movimento ECoERA and oNG Iniciativa Verde, it maps out the consumption of water during all stages of the production process, from the plantation of cotton in the fields to the final discarding of the item by the consumer.

cycle of a pair of jeans, so that the links in the chain are aware of the current situation and can take measures in order to rationalize the use and minimize the environmental impact of the Brazilian fashion.
The reason behind these actions is that influencing the textile indus-try and the fashion market to reach more and more solid standards of sustainability is one of VICUNHA’S goals. “Measuring the big fac-tors of impact – water, energy and raw materials – is an essential step to understand our actual environmental footprint and search for higher and higher standards to reduce it, being transparent with the market and with disseminators of good practices throughout the process,” says German Alejandro Silva, director of Marketing, Sales and Product Development at VICUNHA. And this only makes sense when there are good practices within one’s own walls, and the prod-uct portfolio mirrors this engagement.
For example, in VICUNHA’S factory process, where innovations have been incorporated for the past two decades in order to guarantee a cleaner production, reducing the impact on the environment. During the spinning stage, textile waste is recycled and they go back to com-pose the thread; during dyeing and finishing of the denim, technol-ogies that use less water are used; during weaving, natural starches are employed to prepare the threads, which facilitates and helps the biological process in the stage of effluent treatment.
Measures have been adopted to save energy and reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming. One of them was replacing with LED more than 25,000 fluorescent light bulbs in the factories, which generated a decrease in the consumption of energy (enough to supply monthly 6,000 homes for lower income families). The program to change high yielding electrical engines in all areas of the company also contributes to generating an economy

of 10% in the consumption of electric energy (in this case, enough for 500 homes per month). In the industrial field, the use of fossil fuels in the boilers was replaced by biomass such as from cashew nut husk. The decision brought environmental benefits: it avoided the emission of carbon into the atmosphere (equivalent to planting 200,000 trees) and brought use to an abundant waste that was not employed until then.
The items produced under the Eco Cycle seal, such as Absolut Eco and Color Recycle lines, are other examples of this approach. The Less Water and Recycle classifications, present in different products in the collection, use techniques that lead to an economy of up to 95% of water in the finish processes, as well as a lower use of virgin raw material, coming from the use of recycled fibers. These production measures made it possible for VICUNHA to recycle, internally, 7,000 tons of cotton and 83 million liters of water every year.
In the case of the Absolut Eco line, the reduction in the use of chemical products reaches 90%, thanks to the absence of dyeing. The result is a rustic look that values diversity. In denim, the Color Recycle products bring the technique of applying coating on the natural fabric, which reduces 53% the consumption of chemicals and 32% of water’s. Not to mention the polyester threads that come from recycled PET bottles and are used in the weave – with this, what was supposed to be waste returns to the production process with countless advantages.
Informing consumers on the sustainability of items is, by the way, a task that has been pursued by VICUNHA side by side with retail – the main interface with consumers. The degree of engagement var-ies among countries. In Europe, for example, it is already main-stream for retail chains to question their suppliers in relation to
social-environmental criteria in the search for the fair value, that is to say, a price that reflects appropriate production conditions. In Brazil’s case, the movement is now starting, although the speech not always coincides with actions.
Therefore, it is essential for industry and retail to act together, in order to involve consumers in this discussion and spread good prac-tices throughout the chain. “Just like we work with the retail sector in order to spread trends and fashion information, we want to share our strategic view of sustainability with the sector. The future will require more actions in this regard, and it is important for all parts to be prepared”, says Marcel Imaizumi, director of Operations, Sup-ply Chain and New Business at VICUNHA.
It has been a while since more mature markets, such as part of Asia and Europe have been requiring more sustainability from compa-nies. The movement defending good corporate practices is from 1990, when the first certifications started to be required. Throughout the years, VICUNHA obtained many, like the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, an European green seal that attests that the denim is produced in an eco-

As motivações mudaram.
logically correct manner, and it was renewed in 2010; the Global Re-cycled Certificate, Management System Certificate and ISo 9002 and 14000 certifications, which reflect international standards on quality and environment. In the supply of raw materials, the highlight is the purchase of cotton that has been certified according to the BCI (Bet-ter Cottom Initiative) and ABR (Algodão Brasileiro Responsável) criteria, which verify that all cotton used to manufacture VICUNHA products is produced based on sustainable practices the last cited one with high degree of traceability (read more in the box).
Motivations have changed. If two decades ago the requirements were because of compliance and laws, since companies started to be lia-ble for problems in their production chains, today companies that are in a better position choose to go beyond the fulfillment of these requirements. They genuinely incorporate actions of responsibility in the way that they do business, encouraging a real change with consistency between practice and speech. As one of the largest textile industries in the world, with factories in different locations in Brazil, in the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, and also in Ecuador and Argentina, in addition to branches in Europe and Asia, VICUNHA believes in the strengthening of the Brazilian textile chain towards sustainability and in its role as a vector of this transformation. With good practices and recognizing that there are opportunities to im-prove, VICUNHA embraces the cause and is at the sector’s disposal for a revolution guided by transparency, responsibility and ethics.
The lightness of sustainable feathers
Consumers that follow fashion may not be aware, but Brazil is today in the top po-sition in the world ranking of sustainable cotton producers. Today, the country is re-sponsible for 30% of all cotton licensed by the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), an inter-national certification of feathers produced according to parameters of sustainability. The program is present in 21 countries and represents an important distinguishing feature for sales of Brazilian cotton.
The BCI certification arrived in Brazil in 2010 and, two years later, the Brazilian Re-sponsible Cotton Program, called Programa Algodão Brasileiro Responsável (ABR), was created by the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (Abrapa). The Brazil-ian protocol was unified with the BCI, so that national producers were able to comply with two certifications; both are voluntary. Both the ABR and the BCI comply with the same criteria of sustainability, such as the prohibition of child labor or unfree labor and prohibition to plant in conservation area, as well as the rational use of water and also chemicals in cotton farming.
The Brazilian seal, however, exceeds the standard of the international entity, because it is connected to complying with the local labor and environmental law in Brazil, considered to be one of the most advanced in the world. There are 224 items related to good practices in the verification phase, and the adjustment to these criteria is progressive, which makes it possible for the certified producer to advance harvest after harvest.
“Today 100% of cotton produced in Brazil is traceable and 80% has social-environ-mental certification. Following this path was essential to allow Brazilian cotton producers to conquer international markets, after decades without significant pro-duction caused by pests and other problems,” says Marcio Portocarrero, Abrapa’s CEo. Another distinguishing feature: 92% of feathers produced in Brazil do not need irrigation, and they are raised with rainwater, which considerably reduces the im-pact on consumption of water, as shown by preliminary data raised by the VICUNHA Water Footprint Project.
In the 2018-2019 harvest, in progress, producers should reap 2.25 million tons of certified feather only, coming from 1.25 million hectares of plantation. The seals help translate the reality in the field so that consumers can make good choices.
