DO NOW – 1. hand in HW2. please discuss with your group.

An alien species comes in 3

Colors:

RR = red

YR = orange

YY = yellow

1.Is this simple dominance or incomplete dominance?

2. What % of the offspring will be yellow if the parents are both orange?

Multiple AllelesSometimes, there are more than 2

possibilities. There are any set of 3 or more alleles.

Examples: – hair color, eye color, skin color

Blood Type

Your blood type is determined by which proteins you have on your red blood cell membrane.

If you have these proteins,

Then you are this blood type…

Transfusions

If you’re very sick or in a car accident, you might need to receive blood in a transfusion to make up for blood that you lost.

Blood Transfusions….

….used to be dangerous. Sometimes people would die and sometimes they wouldn’t.

Then, Karl Landsteiner discovered blood groups. Some blood groups are compatible and some are not.

Patients who received blood that wasn’t compatible with their own blood died. Patients who received blood that was compatible with their own blood lived.

What if Blood Type A receives blood from Blood Type B?

The person’s body will see the B proteins and think they’re a stranger!

To protect itself from the stranger, the person’s body will clump up the invading strangers. This is called agglutination.

What does agglutination do to your body?

What if Blood Type AB receives blood from Blood Type B?

The person’s body will see the B proteins and think they’re friends!

No clumping. No dying.

So which blood is compatible?

Blood type…

Can RECEIVE blood from…

A A, OB B, OAB A, B, AB, OO O

How is blood type inherited?•Co dominance - When 2 alleles are

equally dominant.– Example: Blood Type

• 2 Dominant alleles – A & B• 1 recessive allele – O

What if you cross a AO parent with a BO parent?
