What is Technology? List the 5 things that come to mind when you think of

“technology”

What is Technology?

Is there a difference between computer literate

and technologically literate?

i.e. does technology require computers?

What is Technology? List the 5 things that come to mind when you

think of “technology”

Technology…

takes place when people use their knowledge and creativity

to extend their abilities, satisfy needs and wants, and

solve problems

What is Technology?

The practical use of human knowledge to extend

abilities, satisfy needs and wants, and to solve

problems

The Development of Technology Nomadic era - Hunting and gathering

Agricultural age – plow and sickle Development of villages where there was

farming and raising livestock 1700’s = Industrial Age

Muscle power was replaced with machine power of the steam engine

Transportation systems originated Today = Information age Began in the mid 1800’s

Development of transistor and computer

The Design

Process

Are you an inventor?

Are you innovative?

Design is the process of making

new things by planning

Invention

Improving and changing a technology that already exists

The process of designing new products

Innovation

The Design Process

Much like the scientific

method However

you may skip around from step to

step

The Design Process

1. Identify a Need or Define the Problem

2. Gather Information3. Develop Possible Solutions

4. Model the Solution5. Test and Evaluate the Solution

6. Refine the Solution7. Communicate your Ideas

Identify a Need or Define the Problem

Criteria – Things that the product must do or include

Constraints – Limits placed on the design and the designer

Gather Information

“No need to reinvent the wheel’

Research, visit, internet search, talk to people, etc.

Develop Possible Solutions Think of as many design ideas as possible

“Brainstorm”Brainstorming

Process in which group members suggest ideas out loud as they think of them

Ideas are usually written down on a board in front of the group

All advantages and disadvantages of each idea is discussed

Model the Solution Two dimensional and pictorial

drawings/sketches Scale models

Appearance models Functional models

Prototype Computer Simulation

Test and Evaluate the Solution Does it do what it is supposed to?

Is it safe to use? Will it last as long as it needs to?

Is the cost within acceptable limits? Is it comfortable to use?

Does it have a pleasing appearance? Does it stay within the criteria and

constraints?

Refine the Solution If changes are needed after

testing and evaluations you may improve your solution

Communicate your Ideas

Designers have to prove their ideas are worthy of manufacturing

Drawings, charts, prototypes, and dialogue are necessary

Who Designs SolutionsEngineer

Person who uses his or her knowledge of

science, math, technology, and communication

to solve technical design

problems

A New Generation of Engineering Manufacturing Engineers

Increase productivity Aerospace Engineers

Aircrafts Materials Engineers

Develop products for strength, weight, etc Environmental Engineers

Design cleaner production methods Computer Engineers

Interactive CD Activity

Visit the “Designed World” Interactive Lab on the Student CD to explore more about some of the

technologies in our lives.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology

An engineering field that involves manipulating materials on an atomic or molecular level

Principles and Elements of Design

“The Elements of Design” and “The Principles of Design” on the Student

CD

Unit 2 Project Investigate the work of a

famous designer, inventor, or engineer.

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation showing that person’s accomplishments
