Dana TaiSoonBurgess, theNational Portrait Gallery Choreographer-in-Residence, and his company will respond to “Black Out” in apoignant modern dance work with video by designer KellyColburn.WewillattendbyspecialinvitationoffellowPhiBeteand company dancer Christin Arthur. We encourage you toarriveearly toseetheexhibitionprior to thescheduledevent.Silhouettes offered virtually instantaneous likenesses ofeveryone from presidents to those who were enslaved. The

exhibition examines the rich historical roots of this artform and considers its forceful contemporarypresence.TheshowfeaturesworksfromthePortraitGallery’sextensivecollectionofsilhouettes,suchasthosebyAugusteEdouart,whocapturedthelikenessesofsuchnotablefiguresasJohnQuincyAdamsandLydiaMariaChild,andatthesametime,theexhibitionrevealshowcontemporaryartistsarereimaginingsilhouettesinboldandunforgettableways.

SeptemberBookClubMeetingsSeptember:OnThursday,September27,eightmembersofthebookclubmettodiscussthetimelymemoirTheLineBecomesaRiver:DispatchesfromtheBorderbyFranciscoCantú.AformerofficeratCustoms and Border Patrol, Cantú affords readers a look at hisexperiences at the front lines of American immigration policyenforcement. His reflections, observations, personal history, andanecdotes provide crucial insight but eschew easy answers to thequestions we as a country continue to grapple with around ourSouthernborder—whatitmeans,howitlooks,andwhoisallowedtocross.Ourgroupdiscussedtheauthor’strajectoryandmotivationforsharingthesesnapshotsfromhislife,andhisreflectionsonfeelingalternatelypowerlessandadeptatajobthatcausedhimsuchinternaldiscord.SeptemberBonusmeeting:Bypopulardemand,thebookclubmettwiceinSeptember.OnThursday,September 20, six members gathered to discuss TheHouse of Mirth by Edith Wharton. The groupdelightedinWharton’squickwit,culturalobservations,parallelswithourmodernage.Wedebatedhercharacters’agencyintheconfinesoftheirsocialcircles,andremaineddividedonthemoralcompassandgradualdownfallofWharton’smaincharacter,LilyBart.
