Metastatic Lobular Carcinoma of the Breast

Lobular Carcinoma of the Breast

• Arises from terminal ductules of the TDLUs

• Types: classic, alveolar, solid, pleomorphic

• Incidence: 1-20% of invasive breast cancers

• Pure ILC does not involve nipple

• Tendency to be multicentric and bilateral

Lobular Carcinoma of the Breast

• Cytology:– May see separate dyshesive cells or

groups of cells

– Well defined borders

– May see Indian filing

– May see intracytoplasmic vacuoles

Wright Stain

• “Romanovsky-type” stain– – A.K.A. Wright-Giemsa; utilized in peripheral blood smears.

– Contains mixtures of methylene blue, azure, and eosin.

– Metachromasia: property of methylene blue and toluidine blue dyes.

• Cell components stain a different color than the dye itself.

– Mast cell granules, cartilage, and mucin will stain purple.
