Come Holy Spirit!
The Sacrament of Confirmation confers special graces of the Holy Spirit upon the person being confirmed, just as such grac-
es were granted to the Apostles on Pentecost. Like Baptism, therefore, it can only be performed once, and Confirmation in-
creases and deepens all of the graces granted at Baptism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church lists five effects of Confir-
mation:
-it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation [as sons of God] which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!";
-it unites us more firmly to Christ;
-it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
-it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
-it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ,
to confess -the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross.
Parish News Dear Parish Family,
Confirmation is a sacrament of initiation,
that establishes young adults as full-
fledged members of the faith. This sacra-
ment is called Confirmation because the
faith given in Baptism is now confirmed
and made strong. During your Baptism, your parents
and godparents made promises to renounce Satan and
believe in God and the Church on your behalf. At Con-
firmation, you renew those same promises, this time
speaking for yourself.
During Confirmation, the focus is on the Holy Spirit,
who confirmed the apostles on Pentecost and gave
them courage to practice their faith. Catholics believe
that the same Holy Spirit confirms Catholics during the
Sacrament of Confirmation and gives them the same
gifts.
Traditionally, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wis-
dom, understanding, counsel, fortitude (courage),
knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. These gifts are
supernatural graces given to the soul. The 12 fruits of
the Holy Spirit are charity, joy, peace, patience, benig-
nity, goodness, long-suffering, mildness, faith, modes-
ty, continency, and chastity — human qualities that can
be activated by the Holy Spirit.
As we celebrate Confirmation at Sacred Heart this
week, let us ever continue to ask the Holy Spirit to fill
our hearts and minds anew! Let us recall the happy day
of our Confirmation, and be renewed in the joy of
knowing we are loved by God, and empowered to live
faithfully what we were given at baptism.
Peace to you and yours,
Fr. Stevens

AM I PREPARED?
What sort of preparation do I need in order to be ale to re-
ceive Holy Eucharist? Someone who would like to receive Ho-
ly Eucharist must be Catholic. If he has a serious sin on his con-
science, he must first make a confession. Before approaching the
altar, one should be reconciled with his neighbors. Until a few
years ago, the practice was to eat nothing for at least three hours
before Mass; that was how people prepared to encounter Christ in
Holy Communion. Today the Church requires at least one hour
of fasting. Another sign of reverence is to wear one’s best and yet
modest clothing—after all, we have a rendezvous with the Lord
of the world. LUNCH AT HOLY CROSS—IPSWICH Holy Cross Altar Society & National Catholic Society of Forest-
ers will be holding a SPRING BAKE SALE, RUMMAGE, &
