Preparing Students for Post-Secondary and

Career Readiness

What high school data is saying:Out of 100 high school students:

• 75 graduate from high school

• 27 enter the workforce with HS diplomas• 48 continue on to college

• 30 seek bachelor’s degrees• 11 graduate in 4 years• 18 enter two-year institutions• 11 do not complete a degree

….and 25 drop out !!!

S. Stimart - Director, Work Force Development - ACT

Why are 25% of students dropping out?

• One reason often cited is that students cannot see the relevance of school and how it relates to their lives.

• And … we know all students need workplace skills no matter what post-secondary training option they choose …

Career Cruising – Key part of a career readiness system

Career Pathways: A student’s career interests

An excerpt from Cathy’s EDP – http://www.careercruising.com

• Career Cruising EDP portfolio follows the student

• Student academic/career exploration progress measured over time

• Students see relevance/ connection to schoolwork

• Teaches them to document successes, demonstrated skills

• Can be a helpful decision tool as students move to each/next level of education

Career Development is ongoing not a one time event

Self Assessment Who Am I?

Exploration What are my options

Decision Making Sifting/matching

Goal Setting Action Planning

An EDP: Career development process versus event

• Important – we saw how/why (good decisions)• Needed – “exploration without reflections”

has little meaning • Required – Graduation 2011 – (MMC 2006 law change)• Post-secondary institutions/employers may

prefer a portfolio• Students have evidence to show what they have explored and accomplished

Getting ready for the 11th grade MME ACT and WorkKeys Assessments

• Now have a college ready focus and a work ready focus

• Driven by WorkKeys!• Provides a common

target with our business friends

• Gives useable DATA to change our processes

• Reading for Information

• Applied Math• Locating Information

Resulting in the:

Got Skills? …Need Skills?

• We have a tentative interest based career choice • We have an identified skill level score needed • How can we be sure we have the skill levels we

need to prepare for our career?• If we don’t have them, how can we learn them?

(look …a “pair of dimes” we shifted!)

A “pair-a-digm” shift to 24/7 online learning…KeyTrain pre-assesses skills, tracks online time, provides learning experiences, skills building data

Applied practice & scoring data

KeyTrain has a feature inside to search for careers based on

student skills score levels!

ACT College-Readiness Benchmarks

Through collaborative research with postsecondary institutions nationwide, ACT has established the following college readiness benchmarks*:

* Minimum score needed on an ACT subject-area test to indicate a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college course.

How to get this system into your schoolCounselor supported ideas and best practices

• EDP required for first day of class - pathway and skill data• EDP required for entry into CTE or Tech Center program – pathway match• Parent sign off/teacher sign off• Part of a high school transition/ orientation plan• Integrate content into other classes• Personal Curriculum modification• CTE Program of Study- Course Selection- MME- WorkKeys match

One Strategy: Freshman TransitionA proactive intervention

Kids are dropping out:• Drop out prevention• Build high school skills

(KeyTrain) • Data baseline• Create excitement about

the connections• Catch me before I struggle!

Academic scores:How am I doing in early 9th grade in:

• English • Math • Reading• Science

Helps me want to be in schoolProvides career choices!!!

Career Interest Assessment

Interest assessments• Career Cruising Matchmaker (8th grade) • ACT- UNIACT (8th grade) (Interest assessment)= Career Interest(s) / Possible pathways

Skills Assessment

+ ACT EXPLORE (8th grade)+ KeyTrain - Pre assessment= At what skill level am I?

Many students are not graduating, or once they do, they cannot decide who they were meant to be….

We can help them …with SYSTEM wide EDP/e-portfolio ongoing activities …… ensuring SELF-AWARENESS to help them see and REFLECT on what they have to offer………to make LEARNING real to their life TODAY and to their FUTURE

They will create dreams and goals and do the ACTIONS to complete them, because we taught them HOW!

They are our kids!

Let’s help themmake great choicesfor their future and ours!

How are you using student academic assessment data to intervene early?

How are you coordinating your students’ career choice results to help them see the relevance in what they are learning?

How are you connecting this information to your school improvement team efforts?

How can this information provide evidence for educator evaluation?
