What high school data is saying:Out of 100 high school students:

• 75 graduate from high school

• 27 enter the workforce with HS diplomas• 48 continue on to college

• 30 seek bachelor’s degrees• 11 graduate in 4 years• 18 enter two-year institutions• 11 do not complete a degree

….and 25 drop out !!!

S. Stimart - Director, Work Force Development - ACT

Why are 25% of students dropping out?

• One reason often cited is that students cannot see the relevance of school and how it relates to their lives.

• And … we know all students need workplace skills no matter what post-secondary training option they choose …

• Career Cruising EDP portfolio follows the student

• Student academic/career exploration progress measured over time

• Students see relevance/ connection to schoolwork

• Teaches them to document successes, demonstrated skills

• Can be a helpful decision tool as students move to each/next level of education

• Important – we saw how/why (good decisions)• Needed – “exploration without reflections”

has little meaning • Required – Graduation 2011 – (MMC 2006 law change)• Post-secondary institutions/employers may

prefer a portfolio• Students have evidence to show what they have explored and accomplished

“Good to Have” Why should all students have an EDP portfolio?

Got Skills? …Need Skills?

• We have a tentative interest based career choice • We have an identified skill level score needed • How can we be sure we have the skill levels we

need to prepare for our career?• If we don’t have them, how can we learn them?

How are you using student academic assessment data to intervene early?

How are you coordinating your students’ career choice results to help them see the relevance in what they are learning?

How are you connecting this information to your school improvement team efforts?

How can this information provide evidence for educator evaluation?
