Quick Background. . .
• Instruction PPT heavy until 2012-13
• Pre 2012-13 all COM122 classes required 3 sessions
• Began seeing concept of flipped and active learning
in professional literature circa 2011
• Process we used:
1. Created tutorials, embedded into Bb
2. Obtained faculty buy- in, attended HUCOM department
meetings
3. Embedded Research Rescue into COM122 faculty
BlackBoard pages
4. Began exploring other Web tutorials, off-the-shelf
software available for customized instruction.
Old Method: Powerpoint
New Method: 7 Bb modules
Student viewed videos
Research Ready Lessons Learned:
2013• Flipped: NEW information literacy
instruction method for faculty & students
• Some students: DID NOT complete pre-
test requested by faculty
• Some students: DID NOT watch videos;
spent more in-class time reviewing videos
• Some students: DID NOT complete
Keyword, Website search strategy
worksheets; Active team learning DID occur
in class using these tools.
fast forward 2014-15. . .
– Sample: 3 COM 122 classes using Research
Rescue reported they found it “beneficial to
understanding research process & Hazy Library
Resources” (85%)
– Students GOT: Characteristics of
trade/scholarly publications, importance of
using databases and evaluating Websites
– Students NEEDED: More time practicing Boolean
search strategies, citing sources
– Requirements: TIME to plan, prep, promote Bb
modules, get students to go through process.
Research Findings:
• Trial March 2014
• Purchased June 2014 for $1,011 (up to 500 users)
• Summer 2014 - customize tutorial modules
• August faculty meetings – introduce and buy-in (16 COM122 classes)
• Time intensive: Librarian added to each class in Bb, then extract students e-mail addresses, send invitation to each student
Assessment, Modules • Pre and Post-test (10 questions in each)
– Source identification• Primary and secondary sources
• Scholarly and popular sources
– Conquering research• Scholarly vs web
• Source bias
– Identifying sources• Peer reviewed
– Databases• Using library discovery tool (EAGLEsearch)
– Ethical research• Plagiarism
Initial Findings
• 438 students were registered
• 204 (46%) completed pre/post-test
• AE/ME/EE (44%), AS (35%), GSIS (13%),
ABA (4%), Biology/Physics (2%)
• Primarily freshman class
• Average: 38% showed improved correct
responses pre to post test.
More Findings
• Engaging activity: LOTS of upfront work
for librarians in creation of customized
modules to included short videos
• Create active class assignment in tandem
with class to reflect topics and overall
student learning objectives AND include
student research project topics
Student Feedback (Comments)
• “… Developed the argument that the open
web is not the best form of researching a
topic …”
• “These skills will be helpful to me … helping
me write better and more credible research
papers when I enter the workforce.”
• “I now know the difference between
plagiarism and paraphrasing, which will
drastically help my writing.”
Student Feedback
• “… Taught me the importance in enhancing my research skills in order to prepare myself for the real world when I have a profession. It also showed me how to measure the accuracy of a source and if it is credible enough to use in a research paper. Most importantly, I was shown the repercussions of copying the works and ideas of others in my own works and how they can affect other people in the future.”
Future Plans
• Continue using ResearchReady
• Analyze questions and data within each
research module: what worked, what
didn’t?
• Determine where challenges lie: Revise
for 2015
• Embed more videos for visual leaners
• Transfer online learning to the active
portion of the class where needed.
